Job Summary:
Advocate engages in grassroots efforts to increase overall awareness about free-roaming /feral cat issues in underserved areas of New York City’s five boroughs. This person acts as a liaison between identified feeders of cats residing specifically in the five identified focus areas and the ASPCA and other resources by promoting spay/neuter and feral cat caretaking awareness, building trusted partnerships with community residents and agency leaders, and connecting ASPCA pet services directly to people who need them. This person works primarily with selected underserved communities using focused outreach techniques, including door-to-door communication and continued contact and hands on training with community members.
Job Responsibilities:
- Build trusting relationships with community residents to promote & connect with others in need of our services.
- Increase the percentage of free-roaming cats living in managed colonies within focus areas.
- Plan, promote & execute events to connect people and the cats they feed to services we offer.
- Serve as a liaison to connect people with services provided by partner agencies.
- Create interest on the part of residents in trapping local neighborhood cats with the assistance of ASPCA staff
- Be able to engage residents in discussions about increasing their level of care and interest in free-roaming cats
- Develop creative approaches to involve residents in trapping and caring for the cats
- Be willing to seek out and involve non-traditional individuals (non-cat owners, business owners, etc.) in participating in caring for free-roaming cats.
- Assess and meet the needs of the residents and free-roaming cats within the focus areas.
- Schedule spay/neuter appointments & follow up to drive 100% appointment compliance.
- Seek out opportunities and represent SNO and staff display booths at community forums, fairs, festivals and other events.
- Seek out potential volunteer partners to provide outreach and programming support.
- Gather & track outreach data and results; submit reports as required.
- Attend all staff meetings and training sessions.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Education and Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree preferred.
- Current NYS driver license with strong driving record required.
- Access to personal vehicle preferred.
Experience:
- Must have 2-3 years of professional work experience community organizing, social service, sales or customer service experience.
Skill Requirements:
- Bilingual English/Spanish mandatory.
- Demonstrated expertise in TNR and free-roaming cat dynamics
- Problem-solving and mediation skills
- Must possess ability to work independently as well as part of team.
- Must possess strong self-motivation skills and ability to pay close attention to details.
- Must have strong interest in animal welfare and promoting spay/neuter.
- Must have experience with and/or interest in working with diverse urban populations.
- Must be able to present oneself and the ASPCA professionally.
Additional Information:
This full-time position is approximately 40 hours per week and may require evenings and full weekends.
