Mickey
One More Try
In 2009, when Peter S. of Manhattan lost Frosty, his beloved Himalayan, he was hesitant to adopt another cat right away. But sometimes life—or the ASPCA Mobile Adoption van—gets in the way of the best laid plans.
After a frustrating day at work, I turned the corner in front of my apartment building and saw the ASPCA adoption van. I looked at the cats first, since people often want to adopt kittens and don’t pay enough attention to the adult cats.
The first cat who caught my eye was a grey and white male named Mickey. I spent the next few days on the fence, but called the ASPCA every day to see if Mickey was still available. The folks at the ASPCA were so great: Each time I’d call, they would tell me he was there, but did not pressure me to pick him up.
Eventually I adopted Mickey. During his first hour at home, he climbed all over me while I sat on the couch, stretched out on my chest and belly, and nudged me in the face. He is adorable, charming and beautiful. Mickey is always close to me or close to my heart. On bad days, he’s the best company. On good days, he’s even better. We are soul mates.
If you have any pain over the loss of your pet, there is a beautiful little critter who has lost someone, too. My guess is that animal is waiting at the ASPCA for you and wondering when you are going to stop by and make it “all better.”
That’s what happened to me and Mickey. We are buddies for life. He is an endless source of love, joy and, of course, amusement.
