Olive
Worth the Wait
Olive came to the ASPCA through our Humane Law Enforcement department. After surviving two types of cancer, Olive became available for adoption. We
knew she needed a special family who would see past her medical history and age to discover her winning personality. She found that in sisters Celia
and Cara of Brooklyn, who shared their adoption story with us:
When touring the ASPCA, my sister and I were immediately drawn to Olive, then called Mystery. Her beautiful coloring and intelligent eyes, combined with
her eager greeting of everyone in the room, quickly placed her at the top of our list. The veterinarian informed us of her cancer history, but nothing
would deter us from taking her home that day.
Upon stepping into our apartment she quickly surveyed each room and sniffed over everything in her reach to investigate the new surroundings. Within
minutes she seemed at home, running between everyone to be petted.
Adjusting to our new life with a dog has been nothing but a pleasure. I've never been a morning person but with Olive in my life, waking up early every
morning is a joy. The excitement she shows when we go for her morning walk is enough reason for me to get out of bed. The highlight of our walk is our time
in the park, where she loves to roll and trot in the grass.
We were told Olive is about nine years old, but it is hard to believe this excitable, prancing dog could be a senior. While some adopters may be wary of
bringing home an older dog, our experience with Olive has been entirely positive. She was already housetrained (no accidents!) and knew basic commands.
Despite the old adage, she picks up new tricks easily and is always poised to jump up and play.
We had been looking for a dog for a few months before we found Olive, and until we went to the ASPCA, it seemed everything was working against us. A
shelter volunteer told us that everything would work out eventually and we'd find the dog meant for us. She was so right—Olive was well worth the wait.
