Using Animals to Develop Medical Treatments

The ASPCA believes that animals should be used to develop medical treatments only when alternatives do not exist, and when the research goal is of very significant humanitarian value. The ASPCA encourages scientists to seek out viable alternatives, reduce the number of animals used and to replace these animals with techniques that do not involve living animals. It is necessary to ensure that animals used to develop medical treatments experience minimal discomfort and that their welfare is safeguarded in every way.
