Is the water in our Christmas tree stand poisonous to our dog and cat?

Not really, Daniel, but it could have other negative effects. For example, sometimes people add preservatives to Christmas tree water that may contain fertilizers. While these preservatives are poisonous, they can cause stomach upset. Stagnant tree water can also be a breeding ground for bacteria, which can lead to vomiting, nausea, or diarrhea. It’s a good idea to make sure a skirt or a cloth covers the bottom of your tree to deter your dog and cat from drinking the water.

What would someone do in a small town where there is no aspca. There was an animal case and the person to call in the town said that there is no way to take the animal from the owner. All they can do is keep going and checking on the animal to see if they are doing what he or she told them to. How do we get something where the animal can be taken if the situation is bad enough????
I have bunnies, so this year I got a live rosemary topiary shaped like a christmas tree. It is perfect, because rosemary is actually good for them, so there is no risk is they nibble on it.

The Virgina SPCA branch seems to say something slightly different. (I saw this following a link from the Bay Area Cat Rescue website, being not a Virginian.) They assert the sap can also make cats sick:

You may want to address that concern specifically, or contact that chapter and ask them to emend that page.
