Pet Poison Q & A: Ibuprofen & Dogs Don't Mix

Can I give children’s ibuprofen to my Jack Russell terrier?
―Edna H.

Edna, ibuprofen can potentially be very dangerous for dogs. Depending on the dose, it could cause significant gastric irritation and kidney damage. Therefore, we would advise against giving it to your pet. In fact, because many human medicines can be harmful or even deadly to animals depending on the type and dose given, it is important that pet owners never administer any medication without the direction of their local veterinarian. If you suspect that your dog may not be feeling well, we recommend that you contact your vet so that the problem can be assessed and an appropriate medication can be given.

More new questions this week:

- My puppy loves to chew on the spiky pods that fall from the sycamore tree. Are they bad for her?

- I recently noticed my dog eating rabbit feces off the ground. What effect could this have on her?

I didn't know about ibuprofen and dogs. I was out of town and gave my 3 year old 6 lb Yorkie-Shiloh, 200mg's on Saturday night and 400 mg's on Sunday evening. The vet wanted $9000.00 to save him. My 10 yr. old "lost it" when I had to say no. (I won't even mention how I feel).
A friend brought over Activated Charcoal and we have been administering it around the clock.
He drinks water, urination is good and clear. He can still walk.
Blood abnormalities: BUN:178.0 MG/DL
PHOS 14.0 MG/DL

You simply way-overdosed your dog. Simple math says that giving 400mg of ibuprofen to a 6lb dog is like giving 12,000mg to a 180lb human...this would kill a human! You were overdosing your dog at 200mg by about 190mg.

Well after not having the 6-9000.00 that Dr. Ayres in Huntington, WV wanted to try to save Shiloh I thought we would just have to watch him die. (The activated charcoal would have saved him if it were administered right away instead of two days later).
A local nurse suggested the Proctorville Animal Hospital. She said the reason so many "critters" survived the poisen dog food from China was because #1: age-the younger the better the survival rate.
#2: In animals as well as humans, she went on to say, when their vital organs are acutely attacted the organs will automatically try to repair themselves.
The Proctorville Animal Hospital took him for 72 hours and ran fluids through him and within 48 hours my dog looked good as new!
Two weeks later Shiloh was rock climbing in the WV mountains with us!

I came home to find that my two bichon frise, one weighing 18 lbs and the other 25 lbs, had swallowed 10 advil (2000mg) between them. I found an empy container on the floor. Since they wouldn't talk, I had no way to know who had consumed how many pills. I rushed them to the vet after calling poison control. I was fortunate...they survived and I just brought them home tonight after three days in the hospital. They were made to vomit, given charcoal and flushed with iv fluids. They are still on meds for their stomach and low fat/low residue food diets.
This is such a potentially serious poisoning. I recommend that anyone who suspects that their pet has ingested ibuprofen to call poison control and get to a vet. Please do not adopt a policy of "wait and see," as it may then be too late. I was lucky and they received excellent, essential treatment.

I gave my 85lb chocolate lab 200mg ibuprofin for severe arthritus. It did not help and no problems. Should I take him in to get checked? Does anyone know what to do for arthritus? I give him glucosomine, and fish oil, and vet gave him a few injections. He takes rymodol for pain and it does nothing and I heard causes liver damage. He is only five and can't put any weight on his leg.

Please any advice greatly appreciated!
