ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center Releases List of Top 10 Hazards Encountered by Pets in 2006

New List Reveals Significant Increase in Calls Pertaining to Common Household Items
Urbana,Ill., March 5, 2007—The ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) today announced that it managed more than 116,000 calls to its Animal Poison Control Center (APCC) hotline in 2006, several of which pertained to common household items. “While the reason is not clear, calls in virtually each of these categories seems to be on the rise,” said Dr. Steven Hansen, veterinary toxicologist and senior vice president with the ASPCA, who manages the ASPCA’s Midwest Office, which houses the APCC. As National Poison Prevention Week approaches (March 18-24), the ASPCA advises pet parents to stay alert to the possibility of poisoning from these common household items:
1. Human Medications
2. Insecticides
3. Veterinary Medications

Great useful article. It shows how important a clean environment is. We need to use less toxins to help keep our children and pets save.
How do you post a question on here? My Veterinarian tried to give me EXPIRED prescription pain medication to give to my dog (she is 12 years old and has hip dysplasia). He said he had to get rid of the batch that was expiring. I refused and he tried to talk me into it saying, "It won't hurt her". I refused again and he finally gave me some that was not about to expire. My Questions: Would it have hurt her? Is this an ethical thing for my Vet to try to be doing? How would I report this and to whom?
Please, help.
I think it is ridiculous that you charge your $60.00 fee EVERYTIME someone NEEDS to use your POISON CONTROL service. My puppy acidentally ingested some silica gel late at night (which turned out to be non life threatening) and when we had another incident a few months later we were told we had to PAY AGAIN!! What is wrong with you people? You lecture on responsible pet ownership and yet to charge a fee AGAIN? We were led to believe that fee was a one time fee that was good for the life of the dog. This is a travesty. I will NEVER donate money or support you people again because you just proved to me it's not about the animals..it's about the money!! You're just like everyone other business in this world and it's a damned shame!!
