Do You Feed Your Dog Chicken Jerky?
If you feed your dog chicken jerkey, you're obviously a loving pet parent who wants to spoil your pooch with yummy treats. But to be on the safe side, you might want to choose another treat for a while.

The Food and Drug Administration is cautioning consumers of a potential association between development of illness in dogs and the consumption of chicken jerky products also described as chicken tenders, strips or treats. FDA has received more than 70 complaints involving more than 95 dogs who experienced illness that their owners associated with consumption of chicken jerky products.
To date, FDA has not been able to determine a definitive cause for the reported illnesses. FDA has conducted extensive chemical and microbial testing but has not identified any contaminant. Many of the illnesses reported may be the result of causes other than eating chicken jerky.

Yes and she loves it! I have been able to sucessfully train her with chicken jerkey. She is a 10 month old JRT.
Last week I bought my amazing dog Cooper some new Chicken & Rice Jerky treats by Nutro...and I have to say he has had some decreased appetite. He's not a big eater normally, but I'm throwing the bag of treats away. He hasn't had any other symptoms of gastrointestinal distress, but better to err on the side of caution. Thanks ASPCA!
Being a disabled war veteran my dog Foxy is my life. I keep up on all the issues that concern dog, I am member of ASPCA.
When I heard about the Bestro Chicken Jerky recall at Wal-Mart I stopped giving Foxy any dog jerky. I have now gone back to a different brand. Most are made in China, you just need to read the labels.
I feed my dog chicken jerky. I used to buy Bestro's Chicken Jerkys, until they were recalled! I have bought before, and will only buy now, Smokehouse Pets Brand Chicken Jerky from Petsmart! They are the best, my dog loves them, they are clearly his favorite treats, and they now have Duck Jerky's! Which he likes as well!! The Bestro's Brand, really surprised me, but Walmart surprised me way more because, those treats are recalled and yet they still sit on Walmart's store shelves! Why?! They are tainted!! Even bigger surprise is the fact that Walmart, as well as not removing them from store shelves has raised the price of them! What? I checked it out and what used to be $12.88 for a big bag of Bestro's Chicken Jerkys are now $15.88 for the same size bag, that is absolutely crazy!! So what, they don't care that they are selling tainted dog treats to good dogs and good dog owners, and to boot even raising prices of tainted products!! It's just ridiculous!! They should take those treats off of the shelf asap!! If your dog likes Chicken Jerkys, get the Smokehouse Pets brand, they are good and as far as we all know, they are not tainted, and hopefully will never be tainted!! God Bless all of the poor, good, loving, sweet dogs and cats that were made sick or died from those company's stupidity and love for money!!
To let you know, we have two very sweet female King Charles Cavalier puppies 6mo. and 10 mo. that we gave two Smokehouse Chicken Jerky Treats a day since day one because our trainer from Pets Mart said they were 100% chicken breast and were a healthy treat. In July both of our puppies became very ill. Lethargic, loss of bladder, vomiting, diareah, anorexic, but would eat up the chicken jerky treats. We were told after many test that they were suffering from Kidney failure. Which is never found in two puppies from different parents at the same time. They both have been given intervenous fluds daily along with a truckload of medications. Our 6mo. Misty ralied and is doing better, but not yet out of the woods. But our little 10 mo. old Lacie is not doing good at all. This poor little puppy has gone through more painful procedures than any dog should ever have to go through in a lifetime. To date we have spent over $6,000 trying to save our dogs. Now our vet at Banfield says that our 10mo Lacie is terminal and she would be surprised if she lives a year. We have had to force feed her for the last few months. To anonymous, please know Smoke House Treats fron China is the cause of the terrible pain that our dogs and us have gone through. If you don't want you dog or you to go through the pain we have, whatever you do, don't feed your beloved dog anything from China. It breaks ny heart that Pets Mart has had many complaints fron dog owners that Smoke House Chicken Jerky treats have made their dogs sick, including one of their trainers dogs. But they refuse to take them off the shelf. Amazing, and this is the store that cares so nuch for pets. Could it be that Banfield hospital, an affilate of Petsmart, so far, has made over $6,000 from our dogs illness.
A Heart Broken Puppy Lover
My Cavalier King Charles has been very ill the past two weeks from Smokehouse Jerky products. Two weeks ago my dog and three other dogs in another area veterinarian's practice were diagnosed with Fanconi-like symptoms in the same week. The common thread was jerky treats from China. It broke my heart to see my dog so sick because of something I gave her to eat. She has stopped vomiting finally, but it is very difficult to coax her to eat.
We reported this to PetSmart two weeks ago. Their corporate office called today and denied that anything is wrong with the products.
Our local paper wrote a front-page story on this (http://www.timescall.com/news_story.asp?ID=4508), and since then I have other area people tell me that their dogs experienced the same illness from Smokehouse products.
This was a heartbreaking ordeal. Please be careful!
I'm glad to see other people have mentioned their bad experience with Smokehouse Chicken Jerky Strips. I also purchased it from my local PetSmart store. I thought I was an isolated case. I fed my Min Pin the treats and she ended up with what the vet thought, after taking a blood test, was pancreatitis. She was so ill for a week. Constant diarrhea, bloody stools, & vomiting. Luckily, she wasn't ill enough to warrant a stay at the clinic with an IV. She has since recovered. Thank goodness. She's back to eating those healthy organic biscuits.

I started giving my dog Smokehouse Chicken Jerky treats last summer. She loved them..then became lethargic, vomiting, diarrhea, hair thinning and coarse to loss, finally completely anorexic. She was hospitalized twice for a week to be re-hydrated, then ultimately had a feeding tube for over 4 months. After thousands of dollars, and more misery than any living thing should have to endure, I now make her food - all human grade, holistic. She has kidney failure, but still manageable, but had all the other symptoms. Most of her energy, appetite, and hair are back to 'normal' at this point.
I just read the articles (SNOPES and ASPCA) about these treats as she was eating again and I had started her on them again about a month ago and was looking to purchase more. WOW - I immediately checked the bag, and sure enough "made in China". I am taking to the vet to have analysis done - and feel absolutely horrible because I suspect I caused this by giving her these treats. I also wondered why my vet practice and the 'experts' I was taking her to didn't make any connection!? (they were fully aware of her diet, including these treats).
Needless to say, she won't be getting any more of these.
I have a 10month old maltese who just vomited 4 times yesterday and I was wondering what could be wrong with him? I've been giving him chiken jerky .. THANK GOODNESS I saw this website because now I know not to ever give him those treats anymore. After he vomited he just looked so weak & helpless .. but thankfully he started feeling better a couple hours later and started eating his regular dog food. I was so worried. I will be sure to never feed him chicken jerky again!!

The best thing to do is make your own. I bought a dehydrator and make chicken and beef jerky for my dogs. They love it and it's a lot better for them. It's also a lot cheaper because I wait until I find chicken and beef on sale and buy in bulk.
Our dog Pooky got really sick from chicken jerky treats from China. There are all kinds of warnings about them from the FDA and the American Vet Association. If your dog likes chicken jerky, we did find one that is made in America and Pooky loves them! I recently lost my beloved rotti Magnum to these awful chicken jerky dog treats. He had kidney failure. And I did everything in my power to save him but he just got worse so I had to have him put down. I miss him every day and vowed that I would stop hopefully the sales of these treats made in China all together. Make your own treats!
Homemade Chicken Treats for Your Dog
Slice chicken breasts into thin strips;
Place the strips on a non-stick or greased cookie sheet;
If you don't have a dehydrator (who owns one of these?), bake in the oven at 180 degrees overnight or for several hours during the day - it will be like jerky when done;
Let the chicken cool before placing in plastic bags; and
Jerky strips can be frozen for use later if desired.
I found this on a dog forum and it looks easy and most importantly you know where the chicken came from and that it does not have anything in it to kill your dog.
Have there been any complaints about Dogswell products? They make natural chicken jerky products that are found in Whole Foods and Gelsons Markets. Thanks
The warning is only on chicken jerky from CHINA. American products are still considered safe.
