Foreclosures Can Be Bad News For Pets
Stories of families who have lost their homes and find themselves no longer able to keep their pets continue to pour in from around the United States. In New Haven, CT, where foreclosures have gone up 80 percent in the past year, local animal shelters receive an average of a call per day from someone who wants to surrender a pet. In Michigan, the Anti-Cruelty Society shelter has seen a 30-percent intake increase over the same period. And last week, the City of Los Angeles, CA, issued a press release revealing that LA Animal Service’s intake of pets rose 16 percent in the first four months of 2008.California—arguably one the of states hit hardest by the subprime mortgage market collapse—is leading the way in the creation of new legislation that attempts to address this issue. The California State Legislature is now considering Assembly Bill 2949, which would allow bank representatives to immediately seek potentially life-saving help for animals abandoned at foreclosed properties. The bill was introduced by Assemblyman Mark DeSaulnier, and is cosponsored by the ASPCA and the California Animal Association.
“The ASPCA urges pet parents faced with foreclosure to bring their pets to a proper animal shelter if unable to place them with friends or family,” says Californian Jill Buckley, ASPCA Senior Director of Legislative Services. “With the increasing numbers of property abandonments, more and more animals are being left behind to fend for themselves. This bill will help these animals obtain the proper care and attention they need.”AB 2949 will be heard by the full California Assembly as soon as this week, and will then move to the Senate for consideration. PEOPLE NEED TO HELP DOGS EVEN KNOW THERE BLACK OR THERE BREED IS NOT GOOD LIKE AS FOR A EXAMPLE A PIT BULL TARRER OR IF THERE GOOD OR BAD.
Yes, foreclosure can be bad news for pets as well as the family. I and my family found ourselves facing foreclosure and losing our beautiful home and five acres. We had to down size to a small double wide mobile home and five lots. We have six dogs in all. Three basset hounds(Sally Mae, Buddy, Cletus) that we rescued for ourselves and then my father in law passed away and left us two collie/chow mixed brother and sister named Bonnie and Clyde. My daughter lives with us, and she has her small dachshund/bloodhound mixed little girl named Sugar. We have suffered alot of grief, but we suffered together and we have made the most of our move, I think our animals have adjusted much better than we have, they don't seem to care as long as we love them.
We settled into our new neighborhood, and put up some privacy fence to keep our bunch of doggies safe and in their own yard. Wouldn't you know, Clyde found a way out, he went along side a neighbor's property and was investigating the new surroundings, when the neighbor shot at Clyde five times and ended up shooting Clyde through the head with a 45. The bullet went in and out of his head, yes an entrance and exit hole the size of a quarter.
We all were hysterical, but my daughter and niece managed to get Clyde into a truck and rush him to the vet, while I stayed at home to call the sheriff's department. I also called an animal cruelty officer. The neighbor was arrested and taken to jail, and I went that same evening and got a restraining order to keep him away from my home, 500 ft. distance at all times. He was bailed out by one of his friends, but not before the order was delivered to him.
The next day the sheriff's department removed all of his firearms from his residence. What makes some people so darn cruel I will never know. Here our Clyde was just getting used to a new home because of the economy and foreclosure that was not his fault at all, and all of a sudden he is shot in the head. By the grace of God, the bullet missed his brain cavity by a hair and he has lived. Thank You to the wonderful staff at the Shelton Veterinary Clinic, Interlachen Florida.
We got to bring him home yesterday, he is still quite wobbly but has a lot of healing to do, wow I am still amazed, he is alive. We have been blessed to have our beautiful Clyde here with us, so we have weathered the foreclosure, it has taken a back seat to our drama that unfolded here in our new neighborhood. I hear the bad man who shot Clyde will be moving as soon as he gets out of all the trouble he is in, nothing would make me happier! I have had so many bad thoughts about that human, shooting a poor defenseless animal. If Clyde had been hurting him or his animals I could try to understand, but he was just exploring the new places and now will be eternally marked by the act of madness!
The point of this long drawn out writing is yes foreclosure is rough on us all, but our animals are family also and we go through the good and the bad together! One day we may have a larger place for us all, but for now it is quite cozy in our small double wide mobile home. We may not have much, but together we have it ALL!
I've lost 2 homes over the last few years due to economic recession, job lay-offs and predatory lenders. I am no longer a home owner, for the first time in 25 years.
For years, my beloved dogs and cats (3 dogs and 4 cats) have been not only my constant and faithful companions, they've been my family. As a new renter, I found it almost impossible to find a place where they could come with me, but, for me, losing them was absolutely NOT an option. We found ourselves in for a very tough winter in an abandoned house in terrible shape, that belonged to a family friend, without heat or hot water. For those months and until the house could be improved, we sequestered ourselves in a large room, with a space heater for warmth.
It was not a happy situation, but we made it through TOGETHER, and though I was pretty broke, I kept up proper care and feeding for them, even if I had to go without. Despite the fact that everyone advised me to "get rid of the animals" and "make it easier on yourself", I refused to go anywhere they couldn't go with me. I could never imagine my life without them, and I have no regrets for the sacrifices I made to stay with them. They are well worth it. We cuddled through the rough times and somehow made it through. Their love kept me sane and gave me a purpose to keep fighting when all felt hopeless.
PLEASE, if you find yourself in a similar situation, try to keep your animal best friends. Even in a less than perfect environment, they are happiest with you, who they love. The tough times will pass; your love for them, and their love for you will help you all to survive.
As a sad addendum to my last posting (the lady who lost her home and stayed the winter in an abandoned house to keep her animals), I found out last week that one of my dogs, a 7 year-old Shepherd/Basenji mix, and the love of my life, has terminal liver disease and is dying. My heart is completely broken.
Aragorn (that's his name, like Frodo's protector in 'Lord of the Rings') has had no symptoms and looks perfectly healthy despite the destruction of his liver. I've gone into debt to treat him in any way that could improve his quality and quantity of life, but the vets say his imminent demise will come soon. I am desperate to save him...
PLEASE, IF ANYONE OUT THERE HAS ANY IDEAS THAT COULD HELP, PLEASE EMAIL stresstech61@yahoo.com. I am treasuring every moment with him, as I always have, but what I really need is a miracle...
I CANT LIVE WITH OUT MY PETS EITHER. THEY ARE MY LIFE. THEY KEPT ME GOING. IF IT WERENT FOR THEM I WOULDNT BE HERE.
I AM SURE PEOPLE OUT THERE THINK I AM INSANE BUT ONLY IF THEY KNEW WHAT I BEEN THROUGH THEY WILL UNDERSTAND SO I DO ADMIRE YOU STACY AND COMPLETE WITH YOU. YOUR PETS NEED YOU AND YOU NEED THEM. PEOPLE THINK THAT PETS BE JUST FINE ON THEIR OWN OR BEING IN OTHER FAMILY AFTERALL PETS HAD BEEN WITH THEIR MASTER FOR SO LONG AND NO ITS NOT EASY FOR THEM.
KEEP PRAYING STACY DONT GIVE UP AND GO BY AND ASK FOR THE SPONSOR THAT VETS MIGHT HAVE IN THEIR LIST THAT DO HELP OTHER WHO CANT AFFORD FOR TREATMENT.
MY HEART GOES OUT TO YOU AND YOUR KIDS.
