ASPCA to Speak at Conference on Michael Vick Case
The 2007 dog fighting scandal and resulting federal case against former football star Michael Vick and his codefendants dominated the press for months and generated overwhelming public concern. On Friday, September 19, the American Bar Association (ABA) and the National Canine Research Council will host “Prosecuting and Representing Animal Abusers and Caring for the Victims—the Michael Vick Case and Its Impact on Cruelty Cases” at DePaul University College of Law in Chicago, IL. The purpose of the event is to learn from the proceedings of the federal case and discuss its impact on future cruelty cases. The program will feature the ASPCA’s own Dr. Melinda Merck, the lead forensic veterinarian on the Vick case, who will present “Forensic Veterinary Medicine at Work: Case Histories.” Additionally, Dr. Pamela J. Reid, Vice President, ASPCA Animal Behavior Center, will be a featured panelist in a discussion called “Evaluating and Caring for the Victims: Where They Are Now.” Ledy VanKavage, ASPCA Senior Director of Legal Training & Legislation, is the conference’s program chair.
“This was an extremely important case that warrants some ‘post-game’ review,” says VanKavage. “As horrific as it was, the Vick case taught society to reexamine how we investigate, prosecute and care for the victims of animal fighting.”

It is fantastic that animal welfare has become an important topic of discussion in the legal community. Sometimes it takes a terrible situation to make improvements and shine a light on an issue that is so important! This meeting sounds great, I look forward to hearing about it afterwards.

I really do hate michael!!
HE KILLED 8 DOGS!!!
I, too, was saddened by Michael Vick's actions. He comes from the area in which I live, so I had cheered him on for many years. Watched him do good in the community for Boys & Girls Clubs. Yet, he thought it was ok to run a dog fighting ring...?! This just doesn't compute! I'll never be able to fathom how anyone could abuse a defenseless animal... But the cruelty just seems to continue. Yesterday, on our local news in Hampton Roads, VA, there was a story about a man who hacked his dog to death w/a samurai sword. I sobbed, uncontrollably, for an hour and could hardly sleep last night. I know there is nothing anyone can do for the poor dog now but am hoping the ASPCA will get involved, to be sure this excuse-for-a-man gets the maximum sentence for his actions. The link is very long, but here it is:

I'm hoping you can copy & paste it. If not, try going to "MyFox Hampton Roads" and search under "Ches. accused of killing dog with sword". I am appalled and embarrassed that our area is "home" to the Micael Vick case; as well as, a case of a kitten being thrown from a 60 mph car (In Chesapeake, VA); and now, this (ALSO in Chesapeake!). Thank goodness, someone stopped and rescued the kitten! With funds from the community, the little guy has recovered, was adopted by the lady who saved him and is doing great. But, this recent story has no happy ending. The only "happy ending" I can see, is the end of animal cruelty. We need to band together and WIPE IT OUT! I hope the SPCA will be a voice for this poor deceased pup. He truly had no one to speak for him... It saddens and angers me beyond words. Thanks for reading this.
