Dying Puppy Abandoned—Owner Busted!
ASPCA Humane Law Enforcement has caught a 32-year-old man who tried to shirk responsibility by abandoning his sick dog in another borough. On July 25, ASPCA Special Agent Peter Rivas arrested Bronx resident Russell Hobbs for animal cruelty. He has been charged with one count of misdemeanor animal cruelty, and faces up to one year in jail and a $2,000 fine.
Hobbs allegedly abandoned his sick eight-month-old pit bull puppy, Lucy, on July 3, leaving her tethered outside an apartment building on 91st Street in Manhattan. A concerned passerby brought the dog to the ASPCA’s Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital, where veterinarians discovered that she was critically ill with parvovirus. Despite attempts to save her, Lucy died four days later.
Under New York State law, abandoning an animal is a misdemeanor crime punishable by a year in jail, a $1,000 fine, or both.

All I can say about the low life that did this to the companion, is hang' 'em high!
That is so sad . I mean who would do that. I that was my dog then I would I helped it as much as I could! I liv in a place that have lots of stray dogs and cats . I is soooo sad . I try to go to the animal shelter every day. I love animals sooo much!!That is so mean!!!!
unbelieveable. If we can, we should get someone from single aspca in the united states go talk to their goverment and have 1 person check the homes of people to make sure they are i n good hands and shape. [a vet too of course!]
Special Agent Peter Rivas ,
GREAT JOB!
ALONG WITH ALL OTHER AGENTS
THAT HELP THOSE POOR ANIMALS..
GOD BLESS YOU AND ASPCA
SAINT FRANCES
We need action like that here in South Carolina. There are so many owners who decide not to be anymore and just abandon their pets. It disgusts me
I think crimes such as this should be a felony, not a misdemeanor. But at least the got the scum who did that to the poor puppy!!
What angers me so is that what is being done for animals is moving at such a slow pace! I am so sick of hearing and seeing the horrid things people get away with!!!!!! I want for a day when abuse becomes a felony and do away with misdemeanors and jail time is much much much longer than 6 months or a year! A slap on the wrist is not gonna do anything and is no incentive for changing abusive attitudes!! Pain is pain and a life is a life and who's right is it to say OH its just an animal !! JUST AN ANIMAL!!!!!!! Attitudes and laws need changed NOW! ..
i agree with moby so much taking care of a animal is not that hard for real
krystle,
i think people like that should be put away for life, when you murder someone you get putway for 30 years,
what's the difference with an animal.
Only 1 year in jail seams to easy on the man. His dog could have died!!
it makes me so angrey the way some people can just do that and feel no remorse what so ever.
God bless ASPCA!!!!
After watching the Micheal Vick show on Animal Planet, I hope that someone shoots Michael Vick. He is a sick individual!!

taz4747i really feel sorry for this poor dog that had to die like this. This was uncalled for and a one year sentence is too easy on this man. He should face a more severe charge. He should get more than that. People like this that do this to animals should pay more than ever. Animal cruelty charges should be treated as a felony no less than that. This man should suffer the consequences to the maximum. And see how it feels to suffer just like this innocent puppy did. And i don't mean 1 year. that is too easy on him.
i think it is wrong to do that to a poor animal! Make them pay for what they did!
I agree there should be someone to go check on every house to see how well the animals are taken care of.
i love animals so much and i think it is wrong to abuse a animal. i live where there are tuns of farm animals and i always help animals find good homes. i have helped 7 animals so far! I WILL KEEP HELPING!

at ten this am i called animal control of russell co al, the closest thing we have to a service that monitors inhumane treatment of animals, and reported dogs suffering neglect and at least one during 4 days of tropical storm faye, had no shelter AT ALL, no place to lay down except in the water, and stood in the rain, tryed to dig a den, but it kept filling with water until finally the exhausted animal just gave up and lay down in the water.animal control visited for about ten minutes, never left the confines of the vehicle, and left. Its now over six hours later, and the animal has not been attended to in any way, it rained again, meanwhile and i get no answer to my questions..by the way, there have been several dog deaths in the past three years at this location, puppies bred and let die, adult dogs left to suffer and die chained to trees, and these animals recieve no vet care, and no vacines.
Things like this are going to keep happening until everyone who breeds and sells dogs do better screening. As far as I know, in our town, the only place that does any screening at all is our Almost Home Humane Society Shelter. Most private breeders and especially puppy mills will sell to just about anyone with cash. I have neighbors who have multiple dogs. They are in cages just about 24/7. The only time I ever hear them interact with their animals is when they are screaming at them to stop barking! I've called our local Animal Control, but all he did was come, look around and then leave. I keep calling and nothing is done. I'd love some advice on how to get these poor dogs into good homes and away from these people who obviously don't care about them.
anonymous i wish i knew what to tell you about helping those poor caged animals in your neighborhood. I mean face it, when social services turn their selfish backs to the needs of an ailing child and nothing is done, i don't know what the answer anymore to getting people to listen that there is neglect going on. I'm about ready to give up on reading about or aiding in animal care because nothing is being done. What use is it to have programs that go and save animals from puppy mills and every place else only to have nothing done to those responsible? a fine? a tiny weeny jail sentence? big whipee!! its unnerving and beyond belief!!
Moby - Thanks for your comment. I have even tried actually talking to my neighbors. One of their dogs is a beagle mix. We have a full- blooded beagle, so I am fully aware of the issues that go along with them. They do not want to stay in a yard, and will chase after anything, if they can get over or under the fence! LOL! They are a handful, but are very much worth all the effort. I love my Missy to death as she was a rescue dog, and is the most wonderful animal. I've tried to give them help with what I've learned from experience, but to no avail. They just tell me to mind my own business. Usually what I do now, when I hear the screaming and yelling, is hug my sweetie and tell her how much I love her :o)
I've had 8 cats in my life time,
and i've never seen or heard
some thing so heartbreaking!!!
I agree with moby.
I will help you as much
as i can!!!
ASPCA rules!!!
we're getting a dog and a gerbil!
I need some names for my
gerbil!!!
i have four disabled rats and i still care four them i have made rat sized dog wheel chairs for them it sickens me that someone wouldn't take responsibility for their pet
I dont understand people. That have to abuse their pets.Does it make them feel better? that they have to hurt their pet! Does it make them feel like a bigger person. To me those lowlifes have no heart,no feelings nothing but an empty shell. I have at least 3 different lowlifes in my neighborhood that abuse their animals. Trying to pinpoint which ones so I can call the police on them. I have a dog and she means the world to me! I could never be mean to her.thats my baby! shes spoiled rotten!! And I love her!!
Thank God for Heros like SA Peter Rivas. Just read today he busted another low life. Keep up the good work Mr Rivas!!!!!
