Adoption Diaries: Look No Further to Improve Your Social Life

Elyse’s Adoption Diary

Why didn’t I think of it before? Forget bars. Ladies, the best place to find husband material is at an animal shelter. What’s more attractive than a man in an orange volunteer shirt adoringly stroking a purring kitty? Yes, yes, I know. I have to be realistic. There are way more female volunteers than there are male. But that just makes the guys that much more of a catch. Think about it—instead of helping animals, they could be on the couch with a beer. They could be mooning the local convenience store clerk for fun. Worse, their friends probably make fun of them for volunteering. And in spite of all this, they do it anyway! So while a man like this is hard to find, he sure is one worth looking for. Meanwhile, as you wait for him to come along, you’ll be spending time yourself at the shelter playing with animals. So that’s good, right?

In case you’re wondering what inspired that revelation, I simply saw a cute guy in an orange volunteer shirt at the ASPCA Adoption Center. I’m taken, but always looking for opportunities to help out my girls! You can tell a lot about a man by the way he treats animals.

Now, for our feature presentation, the cats and dogs of the ASPCA:

Johnny and Clarice were both sweet in their own way. Johnny, (or Johnny The Licker as I call him) just wanted to be nice to Clarice, and Clarice just wanted to sit on my lap and purr, undisturbed. And so this is what happened when Johnny, who wanted Clarice, tried to get the attention of Clarice, who wanted me. Can you say soap opera?! Watch:

Winner and reigning champion: Clarice. She scored the lap!

They sure make pretty scenery in their cat habitat.

On paper, Richie is as pathetic as they come. 10 years old, no teeth, can barely see…but out of the five special-needs poodles there (rescued from hoarders), he’s the most social and surprisingly active! He’s a staff favorite, and everyone who meets him falls for him. He’s a total lap dog. Being around him is an instant dose of happiness—he trots around like a wind-up toy. In my head I have a soundtrack playing when he walks. With each step: deep, doop, deep, doop. He walks around with his tongue out and it looks like he’s smiling! What a love. Richie, I heart you!

JJ was too embarrassed to show his face. He’s wondering why Richie got the cool preppie green sweater while he was stuck with the snowman. JJ, don’t worry, I think it’s darling! Did you just wince??
Sorry, I mean sexy.

While I was hanging with Richie and the poods, Ava—of my beloved Ava belly rub video—was in the next kennel and jumped up to say hello!
