ASPCA Pet of the Week: Lover Boy

Cat

Chivalry isn’t dead, thanks to a four-year-old orange tabby. Meet Morris. Ever the gentleman, he believes in old-fashioned romance. Head rubs are permitted on the first date, but he is the type to court his adopter before he takes the relationship too far—you know, rolling over on his back and purring.

And just like some modern-day lover boys, Morris gets cold paws just before he’s greeted at the door. “He’s a little nervous in new situations, but very sweet,” says Katie Watts, Feline Behavior Counselor.

But don’t worry—he won’t love you and leave you. Morris isn’t interested in playing the field. All he wants is to settle down in a “quiet household, with someone who wants some cuddle time.”

If you think you are a match for Morris, please call (212) 876-7700, ext. 4120. To see other animals who are waiting for homes, please visit the ASPCA Adoption Center online.

Bet You Didn’t Know MLK’s Smartest Statement of All

Happy Martin Luther King Day! If Dr. King were here today, he would surely remind you of his dream that animals should not be judged by the color of their fur, but by the content of their character.

Spirit

Maybelle

Tulip

All three of these feline superstars are available at the ASPCA Adoption Center. From top to bottom, their names are Spirit, Maybelle and Tulip.

We can all take a lesson from cats, who don’t judge others based on color. Scent, however, is another story. But they’re working on that.

ASPCA Pet of the Week: Put on a Happy Face

OpelIs that a winning smile or what? We bet that Opel is probably thinking about meeting a special family that's ready to make a lifetime commitment. A one-year-old shepherd mix, Opel was returned to the ASPCA because her owner moved and could not take her along.

Our behavior staff dubbed Opel as Life of the Party. That means she’s loads of fun, with brains to match! “She’s very eager to learn for a taste of her favorite treat!” said her former owner. “She knows her basic commands, like ‘down’ and ‘sit,’ and she has no behavior issues.” Opel loves to play with other dogs and get lots of exercise while on the town.

We’re thrilled to report that, as we went to press, Opel found a great new home. You go, Opel! But there are other great dogs just like her waiting for you at the ASPCA Adoption Center online.

ASPCA Pet of the Week: Me Tarzan. Me Available.

Tarzan Naturally, we think all of the cats who enter the ASPCA Adoption Center are beautiful. But once in a while, someone comes along who takes our breath away! Meet Tarzan, a Siamese/Bengal cat with an amazing beige marble pattern on his fur. Tarzan is a truly extraordinary sight! Not just because of his looks—we love to witness the affection he has for his feline friends.

Tarzan has spent most of his two years of life with other kitties. “He grew up around cats and loves them dearly, so he needs a nice brother or sister in his adopted home,” says Amy Geduldig, ASPCA Manager, Media & Communications. Tarzan knows he’s into the feline kind. People, however, he is still unsure about! (Who can blame him?) He’s a bit shy and will take some time to warm up to his new humans.

A sweet housecat who looks like an exotic jungle animal? Cool! To adopt this unique feline, please call (212) 876-7700, ext. 4120. To see other animals who are waiting for homes, please visit the ASPCA Adoption Center online.

ASPCA Pet of the Week: This Spud’s for You!

Spud Speed is the name of the game for Spud! With the world as his playground, this one-year-old pit bull is content to have relay races all day long—with himself. Then watch him stop, sit and gaze at you calmly, as if to say, “What?”

He may be a Go Getter, but there’s more to Spud than an endless supply of energy. “He’s a very smart guy and has done a great job learning his obedience commands,” gushes Victoria Wells, ASPCA Manager of Shelter Behavior. You can also add “winner” to Spud’s list of redeeming qualities. “He won a ribbon in the Halloween costume contest at the park,” laughs Victoria. “He was dressed as raw sewage!” We’re so proud.

If you love to exercise and are looking for a best friend to keep up with you, Spud’s your guy. He loves other dogs, but no cats, please. Kids over 10 are OK. To meet Spud, please call the ASPCA Animal Placement department at (212) 876-7700, ext. 4120. To see other animals who are waiting for homes, please visit the ASPCA Adoption Center online.

P.S. Don’t just take our word for what Spud is all about—read our personal shelter interview with the dog himself!

ASPCA Pet of the Week: Love Guru

MenunuIt’s no wonder that Menunu is a bit pudgy, considering he has the word “menu” in his name! It’s not that Menunu is adverse to exercise—he simply prefers yoga to cardio. Six years old and content in his fur, he loves the chance to stretch his paws and sit in the middle of the room, enjoying the space and peacefully observing his surroundings.

Menunu has been dubbed a Sidekick by Katie Watts, ASPCA Feline Behavior Counselor.

“I love Mr. Pudge! He's the best! He's perfect for someone who wants a cat who has it all (in a really big, cuddly package),” beams Watts. Menunu would love to be your constant companion as you roam about your home, and provide you the quiet comfort you seek after a long, hard day. Everything about Menunu is relaxing; his black fur, his quiet purrs—even his soft meows.

Potential parents should be aware that Menunu will need to be on a special diet, probably for the rest of his life. If you are into the serene scene and would like to meet Menunu, please call the ASPCA Animal Placement department at (212) 876-7700, ext. 4120. To see other animals who are waiting for homes, please visit the ASPCA Adoption Center online.

53?? What? No Way!

“Home for the holidays” has been given new meaning. This weekend we broke our own record in cat adoptions—53 cats went home over the weekend! Many of them were older cats who often get overlooked for the young ‘uns. We attribute this successful weekend to our Free Over Three campaign. Cats three years or older were free—regular adoption procedure applied, of course.

Macy Harriet

Macy and Harriet are two of our long-time cats who now have a permanent residence!

What’s the mood like around the A right now? Tears, joy, celebration—and more happy words like that! Big kudos to our adoptions staff and volunteers who truly outdid themselves and brought love to a lot of lives, both furry and human.

So what does this incredible adoptions feat mean for the holidays? 53 families will have to move breakable ornaments to the top of their tree to make way for the prettiest “ornament” of all to sleep under the lights. 53 families will have to hide the holiday grub from thievin’ paws. 53 families will admire their beautiful gift-wrapping jobs only to have their bows undone and the paper shredded by their newest lovable rascal! And 53 families will learn what holiday magic really means—hearts will be full and households complete, thanks to the rescue of a homeless shelter cat. They won’t be able to imagine spending another holiday without kitty.

ASPCA Pets of the Week: The Fab Five

ASPCA Pets of the Week: The Fab Five

Fab 5Oodles of poodle love is oozing from the kennels at the ASPCA Adoption Center. Five special-needs dogs remain out of the 33 we rescued from hoarders back in October.

They are senior dogs who have dental disease and other medical issues. And we assure you, we call them “special” for a reason—any one of these purebred miniature poodles will make a wonderful pet for the right family. After all, they’re desperate to soak up all the affection they can get! “They want love, and they’re learning how to accept it! It’s such a new thing for them,” says the ASPCA’s Victoria Wells, Manager of Shelter Behavior and Training. They are still shy, and will need some time to come out of their… fur. And what pretty, fluffy white fur it is!

Without further ado, the fab five:

BonnieBonnie: Not one to give up easily, eight-year-old Bonnie knows how to turn the focus to where she wants it—on her!

OrsonOrson: Once this eight-year-old pooch is comfortable with you, he’ll be a constant companion. When he’s not cuddling, he’s observing the world around him—taking it all in.

Richie: Of all the poodles, this tiny 10-year-old ball of fluff is the most social and active. “Even though he can’t see very well, he comes the most readily!” says Wells with pride. You can find him trotting around, toylike, with his tongue sticking out of his smiling kisser.

ShadieShadie: Five-year-old Shadie knows how to work a room collecting cuddles. But all bets are off at mealtime—that’s when he’d like to keep to himself, thank you very much.

WallyWally: Like his brothers and sisters, eight-year-old Wally hasn’t seen much of the world, so new sights and sounds can be scary to him. Won’t you give this shy guy a try?

These amazing animals have so thoroughly stolen the hearts of ASPCA staffers that we’ve given the poods their own web page—please visit for more doggie details. If you’d like to meet the fab five, call the ASPCA Animal Placement department at (212) 876-7700, ext. 4120. ASPCA Pet of the Week: Siamese, If You Please

Marvelous Maybelle is a stunning Siamese mix, if you please. And because she’s mostly blind, her other senses are in tip-top shape. She’s got looks, she’s got smarts, she’s got purrsonality—all that, and she’s as humble and sweet as your average kitty next door.

“Maybelle is extremely affectionate and sweet with people,” says Katie Watts, ASPCA Feline Behavior Counselor. And she doesn’t need perfect eyesight to navigate her environment. “She still gets around great and always uses her litter box,” Watts assures potential adopters.

Because of her poor vision, Maybelle does get scared around other animals, and is looking to be the sole furry inhabitant of her new abode. Won’t you be her eyes in exchange for her purrs? If you’d like to provide Maybelle a safe haven for life, please call the ASPCA Animal Placement department at (212) 876-7700, ext. 4120. To see other animals who are waiting for homes, please visit the ASPCA Adoption Center online.

Free Over Three? Wheeee!

It’s ba-aaack! Once again, the ASPCA Adoption Center is holding free cat adoptions! If you want to adopt a cat who is three or older, head on over this weekend, December 6-7, or next weekend, December 13-14. The cats reside at 424 East 92nd St. between York and 1st Avenues—that is, until you give a kitty a new change of address!

Don’t worry, we won’t “give” a cat to just anyone. While potential adopters don’t have to audition in front of a panel of feline judges (although if cats had it their way, this might be the case!), regular adoption procedure will still follow. We just want to give our beloved older felines a shot at happiness, since they’re used to the kittens stealing their thunder.

For details, check out our press release.

Psst. Tulip and Lenny are waiting for you, along with the rest of the gang.

Volunteers, Spread the Love to Shelters on Thanksgiving

Shelter animals need you on Thanksgiving, too! If you’re already signed up to be a volunteer, won’t you please stop by your local shelter and walk a dog? What better way to burn the exorbitant calories from your feast! Word to the wise, though—cat socializers might want to play with the kitties before your meal so the poor felines aren’t taunted by the scent of turkey on your hands! We kid, of course—any time you can visit is great. Your furry friends will be oh so thankful. Hopefully, the animals you help will be celebrating Turkey Day with a family of their own this time next year. Now there’s a wonderful thought!

You will be thankful, too, when you return home to your own pets and give them a big squeeze. You may not want to let go all weekend.

Big shoutout to all you volunteers out there—we couldn’t do it without you. Lotsa love from the ASPCA. “Here's hoping that all of you have a wonderful Thanksgiving surrounded by good friends and loving family,” says Beverly Pietrucha, CPDT, ASPCA Volunteer Coordinator.

P.S. Not a volunteer yet? This is the perfect week to sign up at your local shelter! Or you can help out by donating blankets, pet toys and extra food (call to see what else they need!).

ASPCA Pet of the Week: Let the Sun Shine for Midnight!

Midnight“She sits on the desks and file cabinets! Just like a houseplant, only prettier,” chuckles Kristi Templeton, ASPCA Animal Behavior Counselor, when asked why Midnight would make a good pet. Midnight is currently being fostered in the ASPCA Adoption Center office by a handful of staff behaviorists; this mellow gal laps up all the attention in her own quiet way.

But don’t worry—you needn’t be a behaviorist to know and love this quintessential feline. All Midnight needs is a good windowsill to curl up on and she’ll be content to soak up the sunshine. “She’d do well in a home with a person as quiet as she is,” adds Templeton.

Our eight-year-old beauty, named for her extravagant black fur, was brought to the ASPCA when her owner moved to a new home where cats weren’t allowed. After spending her whole life as a housecat, she’s a bit out of sorts at our Adoption Center. If you’d like to return Midnight to her rightful role as a kitty princess, please call the ASPCA Animal Placement department at (212) 876-7700, ext. 4120. Please note: Midnight came to us declawed.

Adoption Diaries: Keeping Up With the Kits

Elyse’s Adoption Diary:
So all the mushy stuff I said about mama cats and their beautiful love for their kittens? Their protective nature that makes them hiss when anyone comes near their babies? I guess that applies to their fierce instincts when they have newborns. Once the kittens are a few weeks old and can fend for themselves a bit better, mama is ready for a break!!

“All kittens here and accounted for? Great.”

“See ya!”

Once I, the kittysitter, showed up, mama was out of there faster than you can say “girls’ night out.” I feel you, mama. It’s nice to get a break, and then oh-so-nice to reunite with the babes!

This pooch didn’t have his name and info outside his kennel, so he must have been new. I could have held him all day. (And might have, if security guards didn’t drag me out when the building was closed that night. Kidding, kidding.) He was adopted quickly, of course. Selfish moi can’t help but be a little melancholy…sniff…I never even knew his name!

Hennessy reminded me of the pound dogs in Lady and the Tramp. Whenever a person approached, he put his paws on the glass and gave his cutest—and neediest—“come hither” pout. In the movie, the old-timers coach the newbies to do just that if they want to find a home.

Keeping tabs on Ghost? He’s the poor guy who fell from a fourth-floor balcony. Ghost is improving steadily. Just recently I saw him put weight on his front legs and stretch!

It was suppertime at the A, and Linda had a tough time deciding between a cuddle and food! She compromised; she stopped over for a quick belly rub and then ventured over to her dish.

Finding the Right Breed for the First Family

“Hypoallergenic” is the latest buzz word concerning Mr.Obama and his quest for the First Family’s dog. His daughter, Malia, has allergies, and so he’ll need to find the right breed for her. Fear not, Mr. Future President! We’re here to help.

There is no such thing as a truly non-allergenic or hypoallergenic dog. Dogs (and cats) produce allergenic proteins that can be found in their dander and saliva, regardless of their breed or the length and color of their hair, or lack thereof. Some may produce more—or less—allergens than others simply because of their individual nature.

But we don’t mean to rain on anyone’s parade. If you’re looking to adopt a dog and have an allergic family member like our President elect does, there is a lengthy list of dog breeds who qualify for the job as First Dog. These include, but are not limited to,

• Basenjis
• Bichons
• Chinese Cresteds
• Greyhounds
• Irish Water Spaniels
• Lhasa Apsos
• Malteses
• Poodles
• Portuguese Water Dogs
• Samoyeds
• Schnauzers
• Terriers such as Airedale, Bedlington, Cairn, Dandie Dinmont, Fox, Kerry Blue, Scottish, Wheaton, West Highland and Yorkshire

For some folks, a mix of the above breeds may also prove to be "hypoallergenic," so shelters are a very good source. But even if you prefer a purebred, you can still make adoption your first option. An estimated 25 to 30 percent of shelter dogs are purebred.

We hope we have helped to prevent any unfortunate, unnecessary sneezing in the White House and other households throughout the nation. Thus doing our part as good American citizens.

ASPCA Pet of the Week: Playing for Keeps

If ever there was a pit bull on a mission to prove the world wrong about the breed’s bad rap, it’s Ava. Our six-year-old sweetie thinks life is one big love fest—and everyone’s invited to the party!

“Ava is a favorite of the staff and volunteers,” boasts ASPCA Manager of Shelter Behavior and Training Victoria Wells. Ava is deaf, but Wells insists that dogs who can’t hear are just as easy to train as ones who can. “As long as you have treats, that’s all that matters!” And because of her deafness, the rest of Ava’s senses are heightened, especially her seventh sense—you know, the sense of play.

Ava’s got plenty of energy, and is happy to burn it all with her human buddies. Just give her a simple rub and she’ll roll over in ecstasy! Watch our video below—if you want to be the lucky parent who gets to watch this extreme cuteness on a daily basis, please call the ASPCA Animal Placement department at (212) 876-7700, ext. 4120. ASPCA Pet of the Week: Join Macy's Parade

MacyJust call her MacGyver—you know, that extremely resourceful secret agent on TV! “Macy can make a toy out of just about anything,” says Katie Watts, ASPCA Feline Behavior Counselor. A simple item such as a food dish or a paper towel roll has been known to bring her hours of entertainment!

Dubbed Leader of the Band by our behaviorists, Macy isn’t content to sit around and twiddle her paws. In her spare time she likes to play, run, jump…and play some more. In between sprints, the two-year-old girl takes quick breaks to lie on her side for a rub—then it’s back to her self-conjured adventures. “She is very high-energy and needs lots of extra playtime, but she sure is entertaining!” says Watts.

This singular feline isn’t fond of other cats and is anxious for more room to roam, despite all of the extra social time our volunteers give her. Macy’s looking for a piece of prime real estate that comes with a loving and devoted human. “A single-cat household with a fun, energetic person is exactly what she needs,” Watts assures us.

If you’d like to shake your sillies out with Macy, please call the ASPCA Animal Placement department at (212) 876-7700, ext. 4120. To see other animals who are waiting for homes, please visit the ASPCA Adoption Center online.

November 4: What’s in it for the Four-Leggeds?

November 4: What’s in it for the Four-Leggeds?

So how did the animals fare on Election Day? Pretty darn well, and on both coasts, too! You dudes and dudettes in California passed Proposition 2, the Standards for Confining Farm Animals Act! And the masses in Massachusetts passed a ban on dog racing!

One particular pooch is going be barking with pride as new “First Dog” in the White House. President Elect Obama, along with his family, will consider making pet adoption his first option! Speaking of super cool head honchos, our very own Ed Sayres, ASPCA President & CEO, is delighted about the PR Obama is giving pups, and encourages the First Family to “head to their local animal shelter or rescue group, where there are many extraordinary animals just waiting for a forever home.” Who, oh who, will the lucky canine be? Big props to the new prez’s daughters, Malia and Sasha, who have dad wrapped around their fingers. Way to get a dog from dad, girls!

One of our dogs, Suka, wouldn’t mind a seat in the White House. Of course, she’d be gunning for the Oval Office throne. Doesn’t she look positively stately?

ASPCA Rescues 33 Poodles from Queens Hoarders

On October 23, the ASPCA took custody of 33 miniature poodles who belonged to an elderly couple in Queens, New York. Acknowledging that they are no longer able to adequately care for the dogs, themselves and their home, the couple willingly relinquished all but one of their dogs to the ASPCA so they could receive the individual attention and veterinary care they deserve. The dog they chose to keep will be spayed.

The ASPCA was alerted to the hoarding situation by a case worker from a social services agency who was concerned about the number and condition of animals in the home. She did not know who to call or how to help the animals until she read about animal hoarding on the ASPCA’s website, at which point she contacted the ASPCA and asked for a site assessment to be conducted.

“We were fortunate to be able to accommodate such an influx,” says Gail Buchwald, Senior Vice President, ASPCA Adoption Center & Mobile Spay/Neuter Clinics. “The longer an agency waits to act, the more animals there will be and the worse their condition. Getting them to a shelter as soon as possible gives them the best chance for placement in new homes. In this case, the ASPCA was able to stop the population from exploding further.”

The 33 surrendered poodles, who range in age from two months to six years, had never been walked outside and are not well-socialized to strangers and new environments. While they are all timid and fearful, the majority of the dogs are in relatively good health. After being evaluated, spayed/neutered, microchipped and groomed, most of the puppies and healthy adults were placed in loving new homes this week. You wonderful people flooded in to adopt the poodles! Those still available for adoption are “special needs” dogs who must be placed in quiet homes with parents who are willing to work with their ongoing medical and behavioral requirements.
For more information about adopting a poodle, please call the ASPCA at (212) 876-7700, ext. 3210.

If you think someone you know is struggling with animal hoarding, please read our FAQ.

ASPCA Pet Of the Week: Dancing Tiger, Cuddling Dragon!

TigerDon’t let Tiger’s name fool you—the most ferocious nickname we can come up with for him is “cuddle monster.” If he backs you into a corner, it’s because he wants you to hug him! If his face draws close to yours, be prepared for a good licking and thorough sniffing!

This six-year-old pit bull was a victim of neglect when rescued by ASPCA Humane Law Enforcement agents back in January. Now? He’s been dubbed Life of the Party! If you don’t believe us, just watch him do his circle dance.

Tiger definitely needs his energy channeled on a daily basis, according to Trish McMillan, ASPCA Director, Animal Behavior. “He is a great running partner and has good leash manners. He needs a bit of running exercise every day, and once he’s good and pooped, he loves a good snuggle!”

If you’d like to meet this oh-so-tame Tiger, please call the ASPCA Animal Placement department at (212) 876-7700, ext. 4120. To see other animals who are waiting for homes, please visit the ASPCA Adoption Center online.

Meet Flora!

*Part four in our ongoing series to celebrate Adopt-A-Shelter Dog Month

Flora
Breed: Pit Bull Mix
Color: Tan/White
Gender: Female
Age: 2 years

Rescued by the ASPCA Humane Law Enforcement in April 2008, Flora is an adrenaline-packed action star who loves other dogs and aerobic activities. Here she reflects on maintaining a youthful glow, her native gait and the problem with cats.

ASPCA: Hey, Flora! Great to see you!

Flora: Likewise, love.

ASPCA: So how’s your day been? On the sunny side, I hope.

Flora: Always! I played with my roommate for two hours! Her name’s Ruby, and she’s all puppy fun…keeps me young.

ASPCA: You’re not exactly over the hill, Flo.

Flora: Yeah, but I’m no baby, baby.

ASPCA: Right, and that’s a good thing…

Flora: Uh huh, even though I seem like a wild child, I know my basic manners and do what I’m told.

ASPCA: How Victorian of you!

Flora: There’s nothing wrong with a little old-fashioned girliness.

ASPCA: True that, Floralicious. So tell me, what are you looking for—a Prince Charming?

Flora: Well, he doesn’t have to be a prince! But someone with a lot of pooch experience would be nice…just so I don’t have to take the reins, if you know what I mean.

ASPCA: Er, sort of…

Flora: Let’s not mince words—I’m a big girl, strong and solid. The timid don’t stand a chance!

ASPCA: What’s your walking style, hurried, native New Yorker or ambling, tourist New Yorker?

Flora: Oh, native all the way! I like to walk quickly and need a human who knows how to keep up and leave the slow pokes in the dust.

ASPCA: What about inside? Who do you want to share your space with?

Flora: I love other dogs, obviously, but kids are something else.

ASPCA: What about teenagers?

Flora: Sure, they’re okay—I’m a teenager in human years, after all—but probably no younger. And no cats, ugh! They poop inside, for goodness sake.

ASPCA: Well, you’re a wee picky, Flora, but that’s what we love about you.

Flora: Hey, nothing but high standards here!

ASPCA Pet of the Week: Executive Decisions

catWhen it comes to making decisions, Regina is a professional. Perhaps the young tabby prides herself on her Executive Cat status, as dubbed by our behaviorists. To give you some examples, she decides which humans get to hear her purr. And when she plays with her humans, she decides the precise moments when all petting and cooing will begin, cease and resume.

Regina would do well with an experienced cat adopter who can read feline body language. “She's more of the independent type, so she’d be great for someone who wants a fun, playful cat—but who won't be in their personal space all the time,” says Katie Watts, ASPCA Feline Behavior Counselor. The black-and-white beauty decided she’s not a fan of other cats, so she’s looking for a home she doesn't have to share.

If you are a decision maker like Regina and need to fill the number-one spot on your kitty agenda, please call the ASPCA Animal Placement department at (212) 876-7700, ext. 4120. To see other animals who are waiting for homes, please visit the ASPCA Adoption Center online.

ASDM Shelter Interviews

*Part three in our ongoing series to celebrate Adopt-A-Shelter Dog Month

dogSpud
Breed: Pit Bull Mix
Color: Brindle
Gender: Male
Age: 10 months

Rescued by the ASPCA Humane Law Enforcement in January 2008, Spud is an energetic pogo stick who’s wise beyond his years. Here he discusses his pocketful of moves, need for speed and feline guilt.

ASPCA: Hello, Spud.

Spud: Hi! Hi! Hi!

ASPCA: Wow, you’re a bouncy ball of fun!

Spud: Ya hoooooo!!

ASPCA: So I hear you’ve seen some things in your short life. But I also hear the best hearts have been broken…
He blushes, then spins around in a circle.

ASPCA: And given great talent! Where d’ya get those moves?

Spud:
JustsomethingIlearnedonthestreet! How ‘bout this one?!
He jumps straight up in the air three times in a row.

ASPCA: Spud, you’re such a card! Let’s get serious for a second.

Spud: Wait, I have to run a few more laps. Zoooooom!!
He circles his kennel for two minutes, then stops abruptly.

ASPCA: Okay, are you ready?

Spud: Yes! (He pants.) Yes! (He pants.) Yes! (He pants.) Business, bring it…

ASPCA: So what are you looking for in a pet parent?

Spud: Someone who likes to get out and move, of course! Action is the way to my heart, but I also like to be coddled.

ASPCA: Do you love everyone you meet?

Spud: Yeah! People rock, but so do dogs. I LOVE to play with other dogs!!

ASPCA: What about cats?
He blushes again.

Spud: I really do try to behave around cats, but I can’t! They’re my weakness. They’re just so fuzzy and cute.

ASPCA: So you’re not looking for a cat sibling—what about children?

Spud: I’ve been neutered, so no pups for me in the future…

ASPCA: Sorry that was insensitive. What I meant to say was, do you like human children?

Spud: Hmm, since I’m a roughhouser, I’m best with kids ages 12 and up.

ASPCA: You’re very self-aware, Spud. I like that about you.

Spud: Shucks, youth ain’t wasted on me!

Adoption Diaries: Feelin’ The Love

Elyse’s Adoption Diary

My job is to love all the animals. So am I allowed to fall into a deeper love with a select few? The latest object of my affection is Lois Lane. I can tell you why, or I can show you. Hit “play,” por favor:

She seemed happy enough to be pet, but the roll over onto her belly was a complete surprise! I melted at this big dog’s unexpected display of trust and affection.

dog

Action shot of Lois Lane turning around for a butt scratch.

I’ll spare you most of my Superman-related puns and jokes, since we used them all up on her Pet of the Week description. I do have to point out, however, that this is the view from Lois Lane’s corner kennel:

window

Wow, right? Thanks to this window, it looks like Superman can come flying in to steal a kiss at any moment! (Hey, back off Mr. Spandex, she’s my girl.)

We have a fantastic staff at our ASPCA Adoption Center. Our team of Animal Care Technicians (ACTs) is fully devoted to the care of our furry babies. In this video, Eric, a Medical ACT, feeds a baby orphan kitty.

kitten

Speaking of kittens, I went to visit the litter I’ve been keeping tabs on. One kitten was happily nursing, engrossed in her euphoric meal, until the big bad human came along. (Me.) As the mama cat heard me approach, she quickly darted to the cage door to see what was up and protect her babies. But in doing so, she left the nursing kitten laying on her back, her paws swiping at the air, desperately trying to find her mama and get her food back.

cat

I was so engrossed in the beauty of dainty Atosa—who was fantastic with her two different eye colors, long tail and gorgeous heap of fur—that I didn’t even notice she’s an amputee; she’s only got three legs! She was rescued by our Humane Law Enforcement officers, who found her with severe fractures.

dog

Aww, poor Ghost. He fell off a fourth-story balcony. The biggest pity is that he likes other dogs but can’t play with any right now. Happily, he’s healing nicely. We want to see him romp around with pals soon.

dog

Bucky is a seven-month-old beagle who, in his playful puppyness, took a liking to my pen and ripped a page off my notepad. I think he wanted to take a crack at journalism?!

ASPCA Pet Of The Week: It’s a Bird? It’s a Plane? No, It’s…Lois Lane!

Lois LaneThat’s right, this time it’s the lady who’s got the energy, strength and smarts to be a superhero. This two-year-old pit bull lives in the corner kennel at the ASPCA Adoption Center, complete with a giant window (and a view that would make most New Yorkers jealous), just in case a citizen in distress needs to be rescued. Or at least that’s what we think our Lois Lane likes to daydream about, anyway!

This Go-Getter is a pooch who’s got what it takes. “She is super intelligent and already knows many obedience commands such as sit, down and stay. Lois Lane would love to be with a superman (or woman) who is athletic, energetic and ready to leap tall fire hydrants in a single bound,” says ASPCA Manager of Shelter Behavior and Training Victoria Wells.

When it comes to executing amazing physical feats, Lois Lane loves to roll over for belly rubs. She would be best matched for a home with children 12 years and up. If you are interested in adopting Lois Lane, please call the ASPCA Animal Placement department at (212) 876-7700, ext. 4120. Amy Wuvs Tulip

We have a guest blogger! Amy Geduldig, ASPCA Media & Communications Manager, has been on a personal mission to find Tulip a home. You can always find Amy plugging the feisty kitty on her Facebook and MySpace pages, and she’ll talk about Tulip to anyone who’ll listen. So listen up!

Amy holding Tulip
Amy says:

On the fifth floor at the ASPCA Headquarters on 92nd Street, NYC, there lives a cat with nine lives—and nine personalities to match them. Her name is Tulip, and I’m one of the lucky few who gets to hang out with her during the week.

You may wonder why Tulip has the run of the fifth floor and doesn’t live downstairs with the ASPCA’s crew of cats. It’s simple. Tulip is a free spirit who simply doesn’t fit into dormitory-style living.

Over two years ago Tulip was rescued by our Humane Law Enforcement agents—a small, scraggly kitten—unloved and unwanted. As she’s grown, so has her personality. She can be sweet, she can be salty. She can be playful, she can be lazy. She can be affectionate, she can be aloof. She can be all of these things at once. That is what makes her one of my favorites.

Whoever adopts this beautiful girl is guaranteed to be entertained. You will have a best friend who likes to sit with you while you work, keeps you on your toes when you’re not paying attention, and understands the importance of personal space and quiet time.

Tulip isn’t for everyone. Young children will scare her. Friendly cats and dogs will annoy her. But, if you have a quiet, loving home (and a respectful dog or cat), then I hope one of you will consider opening your home to a little ragamuffin whose heart is as big (if not bigger) than her larger-than-life personality.

Everyone on the fifth floor will be tickled as pink as her nose.

*If you're interested in adopting Tulip, please call the ASPCA Animal Placement department at (212) 876-7700, ext. 4120. To see other animals who are waiting for homes, please visit the ASPCA Adoption Center online.

Adoption Diaries: Film Clip Frenzy!

Elyse’s Adoption Diary

It’s no surprise that Arthur was adopted shortly after I met him. Take a look into the seven-year-old Yorkie’s soulful eyes. They say “Take me home, please.” Arthur is my favorite kind of dog—calm and cuddly. As entertaining as doggie energy is, I like a pooch who can curl up and be lazy with me.

This belly rub is how Arthur gets his exercise:

And now, dear readers, this is what we writer types call juxtaposition. Presenting…puppy energy! Ace is a three-month-old pit bull who has no red-light function.

In the kitten room, I found a young Phantom Of The Adoption Center. Or was he Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde? Or did he star in the movie Face/Off? Or maybe he’s auditioning to play Two-Face in Dick Tracy. OK, I’m done now, really.

If you’re at work, put your headphones on. If you’re home, call in the kids. Turn the volume up high, and listen to silly Peanut purr:

This is Remi. She may look like a toughie in this photo, but if you pass the sniff test, she’s all yours! She's our pet of the week.

“I iz not amuzed.”

ASDM Shelter Interviews

*Part two in our ongoing series to celebrate Adopt-A-Shelter Dog Month.

dogSuka
Breed: Mastiff Mix
Color: Brown Brindle
Gender: Female
Age: 2 years

Rescued by ASPCA Humane Law Enforcement in May 2008, Suka is a high-energy comedienne who’s one part sass and all parts cuddle monkey. Here she reflects on staying in shape, playing to tough crowds and shaking the right toys.

ASPCA: Hello, Suka! It’s nice to see you again. You’re looking adorbs, as always.

Suka: Thanks, darlin! Aren’t you a peach? How does my tail look?

ASPCA: Woah, it’s Speedy McSpeederson back there! How does it move so fast?

Suka: Butt blasters, honey! I do ‘em every day. A girl’s gotta keep on top of her figure or she’ll never meet the two-legged of her dreams.

ASPCA: True that, Suka, but you have much to recommend you, not just a cute rear.

Suka: Well, I do crack a good joke every now and then, but this ain’t the best venue, ahem.

ASPCA: Well, let’s find you the right crowd. What’s your idea of the perfect pet parent?

Suka: Oh girlfriend, where do I start? Tall, dark and handsome? No, seriously, just someone who sees the bright side of things, laughs at all my jokes and likes to horse around.

ASPCA: And what are you offering in return?

Suka: Hon, look at me. I’m a bundle of cuteness, and I shake to please.

ASPCA: Point taken…Got a favorite toy

Suka: The Kong is pretty fun, but sometimes I get a little too jazzed by it.

ASPCA: Jazzed?

Suka: I like to chew it up and shake it all around. I’m better off with toys that can stand my party jaws.

ASPCA: Mkay, but that sounds kinda scary…

Suka: Nah, sugar, it’s all fun.

ASPCA: How ‘bout other dogs? Kids? Cats?

Suka: I have no idea what a cat is, but kids older than six are pretty neat. Dogs aren’t my specialty, but I wouldn’t mind getting to know some.

ASPCA: Suka, you are a charming lady…

Suka: And you have great taste!

ASPCA Pet Of The Week: Say “I Do” to Remi!

RemiSeven years—and she's itchy! No, Remi the cat isn't married and thinking the grass may be greener on the "single" side. We just mean she's seven years old, and restless because she's been with us since March. But she is looking to enter into that forever union between two compatible souls—hers and perhaps…yours?

Katie Watts, ASPCA Feline Behavior Counselor, gives Remi a glowing recommendation: "She's a very sweet cat who loves attention and would be very content sitting by her favorite person's side, just as long as they let her keep her feet on the ground. She doesn't like to be picked up. She can be a bit frisky at times, and would be perfect for someone looking for a cat with a big personality. And I mean that in the best possible way!"

If you're interested in proposing a lifetime commitment to Remi, please call the ASPCA Animal Placement department at (212) 876-7700, ext. 4120. Please note, Remi is on daily medication to control an overactive thyroid. To see other animals who are waiting for homes, please visit the ASPCA Adoption Center online.

ASDM Shelter Interviews

In honor of October as Adopt-A-Shelter Dog Month, we thought we’d shine the spotlight on some great dogs who’ve been at the ASPCA Adoption Center in New York City for far too long. Our interviewer probed their inner worlds to help us all get to know these special pooches a bit better and on the road to adoption. We’ll run a new interview each week, so check back to learn more about our coolest canines!

dogTiger
Breed: Pit Bull Mix
Color: Brindle
Age: 6 years
Gender: Male

Rescued by ASPCA Humane Law Enforcement in early 2008, Tiger is a tough tomato who’s seen a lot, but he’s still a softie on the inside. One of the shelter’s elder statesmen, he never slows down in his quest to find the perfect forever family. Here he reflects on noisy neighbors, the joys of jogging and coming to terms with his checkered past.

ASPCA: Mornin’ Tiger. What’s up?

Tiger: Not much! Just got back from a long jog, and now I’m ready to start the day!

ASPCA: You’re so fit and fab.

Tiger: Thanks, I like to keep it lively. But I really need to find a new running partner to keep me motivated.

ASPCA: Yeah, I feel you. Hopefully this interview will catch some hot marathoner’s eye. So, tell me a little bit about yourself.

Tiger: Well, I’ve had a tough time, as you know. My previous guardian wasn’t the most attentive, shall we say. But the past is the past, and I’m ready to move forward.

ASPCA: And meet someone new?

Tiger: Yes! Someone who’s active and smart. Someone who likes to move and, you know, help me to get rid of all that nervous energy.

ASPCA: But what about cuddling?

Tiger: Of course! That too…after we exercise!

ASPCA: And what of other dogs? Like ‘em or loathe ‘em?

Tiger: You know, it really depends. Some of my neighbors here at the shelter are a little too chatty, no offense. Generally I prefer to play with humans.

ASPCA: Yeah, humans are alright, and they give you belly rubs and treats...

Tiger: Totally! And take me for walks.

ASPCA: So are you a city slicker or a country boy?

Tiger: City, country, by land or by sea—if you have a good heart and fast feet, I’ll be happy.

ASPCA Pet of the Week: Diamond in the Rough

CatWhen Vincent first arrived at the ASPCA Adoption Center, we soon realized that it would take him a while to warm up to people. “He came in so scared that he was shaking. He would cringe every time someone tried to touch him,” recalls Katie Watts, ASPCA Feline Behavior Counselor.

As it turned out, Vincent discovered in just a few weeks that he does indeed like those wacky large things called humans! He’s no dummy—“As soon as you start scratching his head (his favorite spot), he just melts and starts purring,” Katie tells us. “This guy really is a diamond in the rough!” He may still be a little shy with new people, but one thing Vincent’s not is camera shy! When he sees a picture-snapping gizmo, he promptly sticks his nose directly in the lens (making it quite difficult to snap a photo).

This striking beaut “needs a nice quiet home with a patient, loving and quiet human companion,” says Katie. He may be picky, but if you win his heart, he’ll be an amazing pet. If you’re interested in adopting Vincent, please call the ASPCA Animal Placement department at (212) 876-7700, ext. 4120. NYC Adoption Success Story: Graham Central Station

CatIn early September, Manhattan resident Layla Alvandi met her new roommate, Graham, in the cattery at the ASPCA Adoption Center. A tough cookie with a tender middle, the two-year-old cat had waited patiently for months to meet a friend he could count on.

The orange love bug—formerly known as Monroe—first arrived at the ASPCA in rough shape. He was rescued as a stray wandering the outer borough streets of the Bronx and suffering from a head wound. Veterinarians at the ASPCA’s Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital performed surgery to fix the wound, which was likely self-inflicted from excessive scratching. But even after a speedy recovery, this brave cat still struggled with skin allergies that required a hypoallergenic diet.

Graham’s special needs were hardly a deterrent for Layla, who, on first meeting, thought he was very special indeed. “He is seriously the best cat!” she says. “He loves belly rubs and playing fetch with his little toy mouse. And now he likes to sleep with his head on my stomach or in the crook of my arm.”

Though he came from the streets, Graham is a lap cat by nature and, according to his pet mama, has the biggest purr for a tiny body. And his adventurer’s spirit still thrives—after days spent trying to open a closet door in his new home, he finally succeeded. “He got stuck in the storage area above my clothes,” Layla describes. “When I came to get him, he jumped on my shoulder and rode around for awhile.”

Finally this special cat has found a shoulder to lean on, and Layla, for her part, has found a loving mate. “I’m so grateful to the ASPCA for taking such good care of him for eight months,” she says, “so I had a chance to find him.”

Pet of the Week: “Ears” Looking at You!

NutellaNutella, lend us your ears! We really, really, really want to squish ‘em and pet ‘em and play with ‘em because they’re just so darn cute! We're tempted to let this photo speak for itself—but there are so many reasons to adopt this five-year-old honey, let us count the ways.

Our gorgeous Goofball is “the most affectionate dog you’ll ever meet,” says Trish McMillan, MSc, CPDT, ASPCA Director, Animal Behavior. “She loves snuggling, and adores playing with toys. You don't even have to throw them—she'll toss them around, shake them and play all on her own! Nutella gets along well with other dogs and would love a home where she can have a good walk every day and a warm bed to snuggle in. I bet she'll want to sleep under the covers with you!”

If your current pillow isn’t doing the trick and you’d like to adopt Nutella, please call the ASPCA Animal Placement department at (212) 876-7700, ext. 4120. To see other animals who are waiting for homes, please visit the ASPCA Adoption Center online. Please note that Nutella has been diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease and needs to be on a special diet. She also has an underactive thyroid gland, for which she takes twice-daily medication.

Free Cats at the ASPCA—Get ‘Em While They’re Cute!

Gibbons the catTime to give the older guys their due. Spread the word—starting tomorrow, you can adopt a kitty or two for free—if the cat’s at least three years old. It’s all part of our “Free Over Three” campaign. Free…three…whaddya know—that rhymes!

As you know, kittens and very young cats have much better chances of getting adopted. So we’re playing dirty to give our beloved purry ones over three the same chance for a great home.

*The regular adoption process still applies (meaning, we ain’t giving the cats to just anyone just because they’re free) and you can only take home two cats. All of our cats are up-to-date on vaccinations, spayed/neutered and microchipped. So come on down to 424 East 92nd Street in New York City, and meet the feline of your dreams! Over Three. Free.

ASPCA Pet of the Week: It's Tabbi Time!

TabbiLooking for the inside scoop on the ASPCA? You can always talk to Tabbi, a lovely kitty who’s been at our Adoption Center for over a year and a half. But really, all she'll tell you is that while she's gotten top-rate care here, she is yearning for a place to call her own. This black-and-white looker "is very, very deserving of a loving home," says Katie Watts, ASPCA Feline Behavior Counselor. "It's definitely her turn to get adopted!"

Three-year-old Tabbi is a bit shy when she meets new people, but she warms up quickly. "Sweet and mellow, she could use someone to just curl up and cuddle with," Watts tells us. We wonder if this awesome feline hasn't been adopted yet because she hasn’t found someone willing to give her daily medication for inflammatory bowel disease and regularly check her eyes for infections.

Please don't feel intimidated at having to take on Tabbi's minor medical problems. Her love will be the best reward indeed! If you're interested in adopting this good girl, please call the ASPCA Animal Placement department at (212) 876-7700, ext. 4120. To see other animals who are waiting for homes, please visit the ASPCA Adoption Center online.

ASPCA Success Story of the Week: Heavenly Creature

StarEight years ago, Rebecca Simstein of Winston-Salem, NC, found a dehydrated, exhausted puppy abandoned by the side of a rural road. “When we put her in the back seat of our car, she immediately curled up and went to sleep,” Rebecca recalls.

The three-month-old, whom Rebecca named Star for the white star on her chest, wasn’t able to immediately connect with her new family. “It definitely took her awhile to blossom,” Rebecca remembers. “She wasn't afraid, exactly, but she was distant.” After only a few weeks, however, Star showed her family just how “down to earth” she really is.

At a healthy 75 pounds, Star races around her yard, enjoys pulling the stuffing out of toys in 30 seconds flat and, despite her celestial name, has a great relationship with terra firma. “She loves to sit in the front yard for hours at a time and survey her land,” says Rebecca. “There's a wonderful view of the forest and mountains here.”

This moony lovebug has also discovered her favorite earthly delights, and isn’t above playing a good trick to get them. “She loves bagels and peanut butter,” Rebecca tells us. “She’ll look at me and bark a little, as if she needs to go outside, but when I stand up, she leads me into the kitchen instead of to the front door. She’s training me quite well!"

According to her mom, Star always stays active, even in the orbit of her dreams. “At night she sleeps on the bed with her head on the pillow and wags her tail in her sleep,” says Rebecca. Apparently, all is well in the heavens and on earth!

Check out our other success stories.

ASPCA Pet of the Week: Heeeere’s…Jonny!

JonnyDreaming of a confident kitty who’s always up for a good time? Give Jonny a go. An extreme extrovert, he loves to frolic with other cats and keeps it lively long after the show’s over.

“Jonny is a rough-and-tumble cat who will play for hours and never get tired,” says Katie Watts, ASPCA Feline Behavior Counselor. “He has an affectionate side, too, and is often one of the first to greet visitors in his habitat. He'd usually rather play than sit on your lap, though.”

Our fun-loving Jonny suffers from inflammatory bowel syndrome, and would love to meet someone who’s both attentive to his needs and ready to party. If you’re interested in adopting this cool cat, please call the ASPCA Animal Placement department at (212) 876-7700, ext. 4120. ASPCA, New York City: Sue McBride of Clio, MI, embraces her new boy, Tommy, an 11-year-old beagle, at the ASPCA Adoption Center. McBride—who lost her beloved beagle Clarence in April—saw Tommy on a segment of NBC’s Weekend Today, on which he appeared with Dr. Louise Murray, the ASPCA’s Director of Medicine. Late last month she drove from Michigan to Manhattan to adopt him, much to the delight of ASPCA staff and Tommy, who joins McBride’s two other rescue dogs, Charlie and Annie, in his new home near Flint. Emergency! ASPCA Vets Save Starving Pooch

Sometimes the big city can be tough on sensitive souls, and Nala, a tan pit bull with a sweet disposition, is no exception. Earlier this year, the two-year-old dog—emaciated and weak from prolonged starvation—was admitted to the ASPCA’s Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital in New York City for severe anemia and digestive distress. Veterinarians immediately performed extensive blood work and reintroduced solid foods to Nala’s diet. But subsequent radiographs revealed something heartbreaking and life-threatening: Nala’s nearly empty stomach was host to two metal buckles—the sizeable end parts of a collar.

“It’s not uncommon for dogs who are severely anemic to seek out sources of iron, like metal objects,” says Dr. Louise Murray, a board-certified specialist in internal medicine and the ASPCA’s Director of Medicine. “Nala was likely driven to eat her own collar in an effort to survive.”

Worried that Nala was too weak for surgery, Murray opted instead for an endoscopy, a less invasive approach to removing the buckles. After Nala was stabilized in the hospital’s intensive care unit, Murray and Dr. Cara Lane performed the hour-long procedure. They passed an endoscope (fiber-optic technology attached to a tiny camera) through the dog’s mouth, down the esophagus and into the GI tract, and visualized the foreign objects on a computer monitor. With the rapt attention of a dozen hospital staffers, Murray used a long, grabbing instrument to retrieve the pieces of metal, one at a time. The vets’ efforts were an unqualified success, and Nala was saved from risky surgery and further complications.

This summer, after a much-needed period of rest and recovery, Nala, whose name means “gift” in Swahili, is now available for adoption at the ASPCA. With a survivor’s spirit, this special lady awaits the unconditional love and affection she richly deserves.

ASPCA Pet of the Week: Here’s Looking at You!

Like your boy kitties mellow and mushy? Bogey is a ten-year-old orange butterfly who lives for friendships with his four-legged brothers and sisters. In a human companion, he’s looking for someone with a healthy sense of boundaries and life on the sunny side.

“Bogey absolutely LOVES other animals, including dogs!” says Katie Watts, ASPCA Feline Behavior Counselor. “At first he was very nervous with people, but he really came out of his shell when he was put in a habitat with other cats.”

A true pet-trovert, our beloved Bogey thrives best in social situations and prefers to live in a multi-cat or dog household. If you’re interested in adding a mature mate to your nest, please call the ASPCA Animal Placement department at (212) 876-7700, ext. 4120. CosmoGirl Drops In On the ASPCA!

The “A” would like to give a shout out to the animal-loving girly girls over at CosmoGirl magazine. They raised over $2,000 for us by opening up the doors of their prize closet—filled with all kinds of goodies from their corporate sponsors—and selling it all to help us out! Every year CosmoGirl chooses a lucky charity to benefit from this prize closet sale, and because Senior Web Editor Deanne Hess LOVES animals, she chose the ASPCA this year.

Deanne brought two of her summer interns up to our New York City headquarters to deliver the gift. As you can see, they were definitely lovin’ it up with the pooches. The little Jack Russell terrier on their laps is seven-year-old Sorbet, and the snow white pit mix is pretty Pearl. Look how she’s reaching out to Deanne with her left paw!

After hanging out in our adoption facility with all the kitties in Mancattan and the pups on Bark Avenue, Deanne decided to give her CosmoGirl readers a little animal welfare nudge, reminding them not to ignore all the great furry personalities in shelters who are waiting to find families. Says this compassionate young lady, “These dogs and cats need your help, and I urge all of you to consider adopting before going to a breeder.”

Check out what else these CosmoGirls had to say about their visit.

ASPCA Pet of the Week: Queen of Hearts

Want a loyal lass who loves to smooch? Sheba’s the one—an affectionate, seven-year-old pit bull with a charming underbite and an ever-wagging rear end. She’s sugary sweet, and like any self-respecting pooch, she’ll work hard for a cookie.

“She loves to spoon!” says Lauren Bolduc, ASPCA Assistant Manager of Shelter Staff and Sheba’s foster mom. “At bedtime, she cuddles right up to you and sleeps a ten-hour night. She’s an incredible dog—probably the most loving dog I’ve ever met.”

Strictly monogamous, Sheba reserves her kisses for the human kind, and prefers to live in a single pet household, one free of other cats and dogs vying for your love. If you’re interested in adopting this playful girl, please call the ASPCA Animal Placement department at (212) 876-7700, ext. 4120. ASPCA Pet of the Week: Fish Out of Water

Looking for a playmate by land and sea? Meet Flounder, a five-year-old black-and-white explorer who leaps tall furniture in a single pounce. A water bowl diver, this kitty finds the meaning of life in a good romp, but always knows when to say when.

“Flounder’s a tough kitty!” says Margaret McLaughlin, Director of Veterinary Technicians at the ASPCA’s Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital. “He believes he's a dog, and loves to play ball and catch, and snooze in shopping bags. He investigates everyone who comes into my office, and will politely let you know when he is tired of playing with you.”

Though our fun-loving Flounder is playful and charming, he doesn’t much care for the canine kind and would prefer to live in a single cat household. If you’re interested in adopting this feisty feline, please call the ASPCA Animal Placement department at (212) 876-7700, ext. 4120. To see some of our other animals who are waiting for homes, please visit the ASPCA Adoption Center online.

Saved! ASPCA Vet Rescues Rottie Who Ate Bottle Cap

Benny, a four-year-old Rottweiler with a strong stomach and a taste for “street food,” is a true New Yorker. Earlier this year, he arrived at the ASPCA’s Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital in New York City and, according to Dr. Robert Reisman, Medical Coordinator at BMAH, began passing bits of glass in his stool. Radiographs indicated tiny shards scattered throughout the dog’s digestive system. Reisman knew Benny would continue to eliminate the broken glass, but he was troubled by a more serious sign on the radiograph: the outline of a bottle cap stagnant in Benny’s stomach.

Wary of performing major surgery, Dr. Louise Murray, the hospital’s Director of Medicine, decided to take a less aggressive approach to removing the cap. Passing an endoscope (fiber optic technology attached to a tiny camera) through the mouth, down the esophagus, and into the stomach, Murray surveyed Benny’s GI tract on a computer screen. She quickly located the bright green cap, but soon lost it among excessive fluid, hair and other foreign objects in the dog’s stomach. Clearing the debris, she passed a long, grabbing instrument through the endoscope to remove a piece of Styrofoam as well as a mass of hair, glass, twine and twigs. After more than an hour of persistence and patience, Murray located and removed the bottle cap, sparing Benny from invasive surgery.

Months later, Benny is enjoying a full recovery—and an extra thirty pounds—with the help of caring ASPCA staffers and a nutritious diet. Currently available at the ASPCA Adoption Center, now he just needs to meet a permanent dining partner, one who will spoil him with a buffet of love...and healthy treats!

From the ASPCA Adoption Center Files: Up Close and Personal with Gibbons

Part three in our ongoing series in celebration of Adopt-A-Shelter Cat Month.

cat
Gibbons
Color: Black & White
Age: 9 years
Gender: Male

When we enter the kitty habitat that Gibbons shares with other cats, we spot him by the window, squinting his eyes and licking his fur. He looks so peaceful and distinguished there, soaking in the sunlight, that we almost hate to disturb him.

ASPCA: Hey there, old man! Enjoying a little sun, are ya?

Gibbons looks at us and lowers his head in disapproval.

GIBBONS: Well, I never. In my day, if a kitten talked to his elder that way, he’d find his tail sticking out of his head! Such insolence, such impudence, such—

ASPCA: Aw, shucks, Mr. G, we didn’t mean to offend you. We apologize. Can we start over? We think you look great for your age.

GIBBONS: That’s better. You have my permission to proceed with the interview. Now, then, how can I be of service?

ASPCA: Let’s talk about you. How do you like living here with other cats?

GIBBONS: Oh, I like other cats just fine. It’s certain people that I find questionable. Although I have known to fancy a kind-hearted lady once or twice.

ASPCA: Does that mean you don’t want to get adopted?

GIBBONS: Heavens, where did you get an idea like that? But I won’t live with any old sod. When the right human comes along, I’ll know.

ASPCA: What do you imagine that person will be like?

GIBBONS: Sensitive. Intelligent. Someone who has had a cat before and won’t make amateur mistakes. I have no patience for amateurs. I’d do well with someone who knows the difference between when I’m in the mood for affection and when I’d like some space.

ASPCA: Why, Gibbons, are you moody?

GIBBONS: Harumph! You call it moody. I call it particular. I’ll have you know I can be quite a bit of fun.

ASPCA: We never doubted it, G. Not for a second.

We catch Gibbons smile ever so slightly. When he realizes we’ve noticed, he quickly turns his head and gazes out the window.

From the ASPCA Adoption Center Files: Up Close and Personal with Avril

Part two in our ongoing series in celebration of Adopt-A-Shelter Cat Month.

Avril

Color: Black
Age: 5 years
Gender: Female

As we approach Avril’s cage, she immediately begins to stare us down. That’s when we notice her remarkable yellow eyes, blazing bright through her jet black fur.

ASPCA: Hello, pretty kitty! Got a few minutes?

Avril stretches her paws out in front of her, then turns around and sashays to the rear of her cage, where she curls up and continues to look at us. She is wearing her poker face.

ASPCA: I don’t mean to bug you. It’s okay if you’re shy.

We speak in a gentle voice and slowly hold out our hands. Avril takes a moment to consider the offering, then comes and sniffs our fingers.

AVRIL: Well, then. I guess you’re all right. You may scratch my head if you’d like.

We do so.

AVRIL: Purrrrrrrrr. Purrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. Puuuuuuurrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. Okay, that’s enough of that. What did you want to talk about?

ASPCA: You! What should a potential adopter know about you?

AVRIL: Adopter? Gee, I don’t know. I’ve been here so long I can’t even imagine going to live in a real home. That would be…simply wonderful!

ASPCA: What kind of real home do you imagine yourself in?

AVRIL: Let’s see. I’d love a calm, peaceful home with no small children or other cats. Oh, and no smokers! I have asthma. Besides, I don’t condone that filthy habit. Harumph!

Pause.

AVRIL: Well, don’t just stand there. Pet my head, will you?

We oblige.

AVRIL: Purrrrrrrrrr. Oh, I do so like getting rubbed around my face and cheeks! HEY, cut it out! Don’t even think of getting near my tail!

ASPCA: Sorry. It’s a fine tail.

AVRIL: You bet it is, buster.

ASPCA: Wow—you sure got over your shyness quickly!

From the ASPCA Adoption Center Files: Up Close and Personal with Fabian

*June is Adopt-A-Shelter Cat Month. Some of our cats have been here for longer than we'd like (or they deserve). We're going to post a new kitty interview every Friday this month, so stay tuned! Here's Fabian to kick things off...

Fabian
Color: White/Orange
Age: 9 1/2 years
Gender: Male
ASPCA: Good morning, Fabian.

Fabian slowly opens one eye, then the second. He blinks and takes a moment to decide whether he’s going to talk to me or go back to sleep. He yawns.

FABIAN: Is it time for our interview already? I was just having the most excellent dream. It’s a recurring dream. I’m chasing this mouse, but he always gets away. Ah, this time I almost had him…darn.

ASPCA: Sorry about that, Fabe. But we wanna get you adopted, so let’s do this. What are you looking for in a family?

FABIAN: Ummmm. I’m not too picky. I’m a pretty chill guy. All I want is someone who will let me hang out. I like to get close. I’m not saying I’ll be all over you. I just want to be near you. If there’s a spot reserved for me next to you on a chair or in bed, that’ll be swell. But don’t think you should pick me up or anything...I’m not into that.

ASPCA: Do you like other cats?

FABIAN: Eh, I’d rather have a human all to myself. Preferably someone who’s had a cat before. I don’t want to be stuck with someone who doesn’t know what they’re doing!

ASPCA: Has anyone ever commented on your big head?

FABIAN: Gee, I hear that every day! I’m proud of my big head. I think I’m handsome, and it just goes to show I have lots of room for brains!

ASPCA: We think you’re stunning! Orange head, big eyes—and clever, too. Do you have time for a head rub before we let you get back to sleep?

FABIAN: Ooh, ooh, yeah! I always have time for a head rub.

Adoption Diaries: I Think I'll Go For a Walk Outside Now...

Elyse's Adoption Diary:

I can officially walk level one (easy) dogs at the ASPCA adoption center now! This weekend I completed my training. Dog Captain Neal Kushner, who generously donates his time on Saturdays to train new volunteers on dog walking, gave us a whopping 3-hour lesson. After giving his table talk, Neal took us out to walk Cookie.

Cookie is a darling 7-year-old pit mix with unusually large ears for her breed! She was a delight to walk with outside--cooperative and inquisitive. All three of us in training took turns walking her...and guess which one of us got the honor of demonstrating her first poop scooping?

I returned to the adoption center yesterday. There seem to be a whole lot of puppies there right now! Speaking of puppies, Bella's bunch are growing beautifully. Here, see for yourself!

Remember how small they were in my last photo?

My 'lil video clip du jour is of Zena. I didn't get to know her well, but I hung with her long enough to fall in love with that amazing tongue of hers! Observe her conversation with a dog mate:

Don't worry, I didn't neglect the cats! (As if!) Of course, I made my usual trip to the "fat cat habitat" and hung with Whitney (guys, why is she still there? Did you NOT see last week's purr video??). Whitney's buddy Missy turned out to be a real mush ball too. Give her a head rub and she's golden.

Over in Habitat 1 is Fresca. She likes to hang out in the window and observe NYC foot traffic, and she apparently also likes to pose for photographs.

Adoption Diaries: Reunited!

Elyse's Adoption Diary

Whitney's back in her habitat! For those who don't recall, Whitney is the fabulous white cat I fell for weeks back. I had to endure a couple weeks without her as I waited for her to recover from her upper respiratory infection. Now, she's back and purrier than ever. I had to take a video so you could hear this loud motor for yourself. Observe:

My favorite part is toward the end, when you see her rest her head on my lap.

I implore you, give her a good home! As much as I'll miss her, I'll be thrilled to see her gone. This 4-year-old white love ball is waiting for the chance to make someone very happy and spoiled. I'd take her myself if my own cats would let me.

Aaaaand this is Tulip. Tulip has been here at the ASPCA for almost 2 years. She was rescued by our Humane Law Enforcement officers, who found her scarily emaciated. They took her back to the ASPCA, and within a week, she regained 48% of her weight! That's half a Tulip! Now, I must admit she has a pretty good life, living in a corner office and getting pampered all day by the corporate folks who work on her floor.

Everybody stopped me to tell me how much they loved Tulip and to please get her adopted (so come on, people, my reputation is at stake). Even though Tulip likes "her" office, Tulip needs a great home, a place she doesn't wonder where everyone went off to on weekends and national holidays. Besides, we want to give other cats a chance to be an office foster.

Hey, I have two more adoptions to report! Gomez, a wonderful and kind cat, and a little funny pooch, Hedley, found homes. Thanks for all the warm comments you've sent about these guys! Keep up the good work! Who knows, you may have helped guide their adopters to them.

Adoption Diaries: Litter Your Life with Love

Elyse's Adoption Diary:

There really ought to be a warning...I was walking down Bark Avenue (at our adoption center), and turned the corner, and boom! There they were--a litter of nursing puppies! Can you say cuteness overload? It was almost too much for my heart to take!

The only thing better than puppies are ones getting their breakfast from mama. This is Bella. Doesn't she look proud?

And this is Chewy (no, not from Star Wars). Chewy's another silly one. The little Yorkie made himself right at home on my lap. Fuzzy, sweet and curious, he's everything that's wonderful about small dogs. As I headed for the door after our cuddle session, he whimpered, "Don't leave me."
Jazzy Joyce has been here since June of 2006. She's a sensitive 10-year-old, and prefers to be petted on her head. Jazzy was treated for an overactive thyroid gland in September. She's still working on growing back her fur, but I don't know, I think she looks pretty cool without it.

I'm pleased two report that two animals I've mentioned here previously have been adopted! Pocahontas, the sweet old cat, and Cola, the sweet old dog! This was a good week for our seniors!

Adoption Diaries: They're the Pits!

Elyse's Adoption Diary:

This is Oreo, 3 months old. He wasn't too interested in the idea of leaving his cage. That is, of course, until I took him out and we played for a few minutes. When I dared return him to his kitty condo, he made quite a scene. He wanted out! As I played with other cats, he jumped all around and kept sticking his nose and paws out of the holes, like you see in the pic, and yelling at me. Poor thing looked so pathetic and desperate that he made me feel guilty...I eventually gave in and let him back out.

And here is Pocahontas (I'm desperately trying to refrain from making any silly puns or references to the legendary Native American princess). Pocahontas loved to pose for me like a statue. See? And when I put her in my lap, I knew she'd have stayed there forever if she had a choice. She definitely wouldn't be there if she were younger (she's 12).

Gomez was incredibly difficult to get a photo of, but for the sweetest reason. I couldn't get far away enough to take a picture because the little love bug shadowed my every step! He wanted some up close and personal rubbing. Finally, I broke out the cat dancer toy -- here he is above, ready to attack.

Now, on to the doggies. I got to witness something really neat -- Special Agent Ruiz (you may recognize him from "Animal Precinct") brought three pit puppies in. He had just rescued them from the Bronx. These guys were so anxious to eat they consumed their food in seconds! Just look at them playing! All together now: awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww.

I thought I'd leave you with a treat: this is 2-month-old Norma, who was intrigued by my camera. If you listen carefully, you can hear her loud purr. She was adopted by the time I left. They go so quickly when they're that little and cute. It's the older ones who really need help, the poor darlings!

Our Take on the Ellen Story

We have been getting tons of inquries from you regarding "the Ellen situation." To recap, Iggy, the dog adopted by Ellen DeGeneres from the Los Angeles-based rescue group Mutts & Moms, was recently removed from Ms. DeGeneres’ hairdresser’s home after the rescue group learned of the re-homing that was conducted without its knowledge or prior approval, as specified in its adoption contract.

Here is our official statement:

Said ASPCA President & CEO Ed Sayres, “Ms. DeGeneres’ love and concern for animals has become practically iconic. As such, we have the utmost respect for her actions in trying to provide loving homes for animals in need—she sets a great example for not just other celebrities, but the entire American public.”

“We also understand the point of view of Mutts & Moms. Several shelters, including our own, have similar language written into their contracts that essentially function as a safety net for the animals they adopt out, so that adopters know they can always bring the animals back in case the adoption doesn’t work out. With an estimated five to seven million companion animals entering shelters every year, the last thing any responsible shelter wants to see is the unnecessary euthanasia of pets.”

All shelters in the United States function as independent entities, each with their own specific adoption policies. “Had a similar situation been encountered with an ASPCA adopter,” said Sayres, “and had the new home met our adoption criteria, in all likelihood we would have encouraged the new home environment for the animal. Furthermore, the ASPCA applauds those who provide responsible pet care by providing veterinary needs—such as spaying or neutering—behavior training, as well as providing the animal with a safe and loving home.

“We would encourage Mutts & Moms to re-visit their approach to this situation and look forward to a positive outcome that reinforces the importance of pets in our society and the human-animal bond.”

Adoption Diaries: All About Dogs

Elyse's Adoption Diary:

Come on, what's cuter than a litter of brand new kittens?

I met these little guys yesterday. They are being fostered in the office of Barbara MacDonald, who is Volunteer Coordinator, Feline Enrichment, at the ASPCA Adoption Center. I don't know how she gets any work done (but she does--she's fabulous!).

After I pried myself away from the kittens, I headed on over to Bark Avenue to play with some doggies. When I walked into Cola's room (which is bigger than my cubicle), Cola greeted me on her hind legs, her ears straight in the air. This funny girl cracked me up--she was more intrigued by my notepad than me, until she realized I give head rubs and my notepad doesn't. When I dared to stop rubbing, she thrust her head into my hands to tell me, "Don't even think about stopping."

Cola is such a sweet girl. The only reason she hasn't been adopted is she's 11, and of course people typically go for the young 'uns. But look at her! How can you resist those giant eyes and that silly underbite! It looks like she has fangs, which is almost scary 'til she starts licking you all over the place like the goofball she is.

Honorable mentions go to Hedley and Eva, two more small dogs who share a room.

Isn't Eva just the silliest little Shih Tzu? And Hedley's got that unbearable "please take me home" face. Ooh, I just want to squish them!

After I had my doggie fix, I went to the cat habitat to visit Whitney, whom I'd been thinking about all week. I was so looking forward to seeing her, but sadly, just as I got there, an animal technician was taking her to the doctor upstairs. I'm keeping my paws crossed for her, and hoping I can see her next week and hear that tremendous purr of hers.

At least I got to play with Harriet. You may recall, I started writing about her last week.

As you can see, she still needs to lose weight, but she's been working very hard on her diet and looks better already! Her coat is really stunning in person. Her colors are quite vibrant and lovely.

That's all for now. Check in next week to read about more animals at our adoption center and get updates on these guys!

Adoption Diaries: Getting To Know You

Elyse's Adoption Diary:

This week I began socializing cats at our adoption center after joining other volunteers in a cat class. My plan is to bring you weekly updates of the cats I get to know. Why? The most important reason is to give these cats some much needed PR, of course (maybe you readers will want to adopt someone!). The other reason is, frankly, I wanted an excuse to gush about kitties and doggies! I'm still in dog training (more on that next week).

So, the cats of the A: Some cats are in cages (really nice, modern ones that don't haver bars!) and others are in habitats. Habitats are spacious rooms that house cats who can freely roam about and interact with each other.

Yesterday, I walked into what I've dubbed the "fat cat habitat." The overweight cats are put together, of course, because they are on similar diets. I made my rounds, patting kitties one by one. Suddenly I heard a gigantic rumble. Purrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. I turned around and saw Whitney frantically trying to get me to come back and pay more attention to her. She stuck her head out as far as it could go, wanting some more ear rubs . Whitney is a 4-year-old stunning snow-white girl. I LOVE white cats! "Ok, Ok!" I told her. "Relax, I'm coming!"

I scooped Whitney up into my arms and carried her to the socialization area. I sat down and she plopped herself on my lap. I'm not kidding, this girl has the loudest purr I've ever heard. Oh man, I'm so in love.

As I played with Whitney, another cat, Harriet, investigated the stuffed meerkat I had on the floor by my purse. Harriet's a cutie--she mostly lounges, but does have little spurts of playful energy. Like when she sees a meerkat. Harriet has been with us since Sept. 06--needless to say, she can really use a home.

I wandered into the next habitat and found Pierre. Pierre is a beautiful boy, here since March 06. He has an old scar with fur missing between his shoulder blades. He'd love to go home with another cat from his habitat or join a household that already has other felines. Pierre is one chill dude.

Here's Pierre coming toward me with that swanky walk and "come hither" eyes.

This is Smokie. Smokie is being fostered in an office by two employees--Karen Lopez, Manager of Shelter Staff and Trish Suess, Intake Assistant. The second I walked in he started purring and licking me (maybe he could tell I had pizza just before?). Smokie is a cuddly mushball who loves to explore--especially boxes. His foster moms said he's getting pretty bored and is needing a home, like, yesterday. I don't blame him! Usually folks get to leave an office after working all day! And he works very, very hard. I hear he's about to be promoted.

New York Showcases Its Cats This Weekend

If you’d like to spend zero and see 500 cats this weekend, head on over to NYC’s Madison Square Garden for its giant Adopt-A-Cat event. The public is invited—admission free—to meet the homeless cats presented by more than 20 local animal shelters, humane associations and rescue groups.

And yes, of course the felines of the ASPCA will be making an appearance! Once they heard that people were going to be adopting kitties, they told us we better bring them along if we know what’s good for us. And you know cats—can’t say no to ‘em. Of course, the silly kitties also thought the event was at a real garden (we let them down gently).

Public hours:
Saturday, October 13th: 10 A.M. to 6 P.M.
Sunday, October 14th: 10 A.M. to 5 P.M.

**In conjunction with the event, the Mayor's Alliance for NYC's animals, along with the Cat Fancier's Association, will present a Code 3 van parked outside MSG, on 33rd st. and 8th Avenue, both days this weekend. You’ll get a chance to tour a real mobile animal hospital!

This One's For the Kiddies

Top 10 Things You Can Do For Your Dog

October is Adopt-A-Shelter Dog Month—and here at the ASPCA, that means that we’re not gonna stop talking about how great dogs are from now until October 31!

To get the pooch party started, we prepared a list of 10 things you can do for your dog this month…and every month!

1. Is your pooch an action hero or a couch potato? If you can’t feel Rover’s ribs, he may need to shed a few pounds. Ask your vet about a healthy and safe doggie diet-and-exercise program.

2. Tag, you’re it! Be sure your dog wears a collar with ID tag that includes your family’s name and phone number.

3. Did you know that your dog has her own personal hair stylist? She sure does—and that would be YOU, of course! It’s a good idea to brush her once or twice a week. (If she has long or curly hair, you’ll need to comb her every day.)

4. Your dog has her own personal trainer, too! Yup, that’s right, you again! Spend at least 20 minutes a day playing her favorite game, whether it’s fetch, Frisbee or find-the-biscuit.

5. Fur sure! Check your dog’s coat and skin for lumps, bumps, flakes and scabs. If you find what looks like teeny specks of black pepper, tell an adult. Poochie may have fleas!

6. Snip tip! Did you know that your dog’s nails should be clipped regularly? Your vet can show you how.

7. Is Boo Boo on his best behavior? A well-mannered pooch can walk on a leash without pulling and understands the commands “Come,” “Sit!” and “Stay!”

8. Mean greens! Keep Kookie away from poisonous plants and trees, including lilies, azaleas, rhododendron, English ivy and yew.

9. Puppies just wanna have fun…and when they start teething, they just wanna chew. Get your pup set up with a nylon bone.

10. Be a hot shot and make sure your dog visits the veterinarian for a checkup once a year.

Chat About Your Dog's Health With ASPCA Vet -- TODAY!

We've mentioned it a few times, but it's worth repeating: October is Adopt-A-Shelter-Dog Month! Here to kick things off is Dr. Lila Miller, ASPCA Vice President, Veterinary Outreach. Dr. Miller will join us for a live, online TODAY from noon to 2:00 P.M. EST, to answer your health questions about shelter dogs and your own pups. Here are a couple of examples:

I am interested in adopting a special needs dog—what do I need to be prepared for?

What are some less obvious signs that it’s time to take my dog to the vet?

How do small shelters with little money deal with a dog’s health problems?

Miller has been working with pooches at the “A” for almost 30 years and has recently co-edited the first textbook on shelter medicine, Shelter Medicine for Veterinarians and Staff. She’s currently working on a textbook devoted to the management of infectious diseases in shelters.

P.S. Please note, you'll need to log in to post your questions, so click here to sign up if you're not already a member of the ASPCA Community.

Happy October!

Today we're kicking off Adopt-A-Shelter-Dog Month!

What does your canine pal do when no one's looking? You know…when he has space, time and perhaps permission to set his own agenda for a bit? Like during the day when no one’s home, or out in the backyard when he thinks no one’s looking. Are you up for the challenge? Take a step back from your usual caretaking role for a day, and just observe. Catch your dog in the act of being...your dog.

But Did He Serenade the Shelter Animals?

Peter Yarrow visited our shelter this afternoon! Yep, that would be the Peter in Peter, Paul and Mary. He dropped in to surprise his assistant, Rachel Jackson, for her birthday (Happy Birthday, Rachel). Rachel is a volunteer dog walker here. Maybe some of Peter’s do-gooder spirit rubbed off on her…

While visiting, the folk singer met ASPCA President & CEO Ed Sayres and toured our recently renovated adoption center. Peter is the proud parent of a rescued Jack Russell-Chihuahua mix named Zackie, and recently penned a best-selling children's book titled—well, whaddya know!—Puff, the Magic Dragon.

You rock, Peter—thanks for stopping by!

Kitty’s Turn to Find Real Love!

Matchmaker, Matchmaker
Find me a find
Fetch me a fetch

We at the ASPCA are enjoying the success of our Meet Your Match™ Canine-ality™ program, which has spread to over 100 animal shelters nationwide. This program, which matches an animal’s personality to an adopter’s lifestyle and preferences, has resulted in fewer people returning their dogs.

Now, we’ll be launching the same program for cats and cat lovers, affectionately called: Meet Your Match™ Feline-ality™

Sharon L. Peters of USA Today reported this morning:

"Science is much better than emotion" in guiding a person to the perfect-for-you dog, says Emily Weiss, a certified applied animal behaviorist. She developed the two-pronged tool that assesses and classifies canines according to their personalities and likely post-adoption behavior and also quizzes would-be adopters.

The program was created to deal with the reality that as many as 20 of every 100 dogs adopted from some shelters are soon returned, many of them because of the dog's energy level or other personality traits.

The way Meet Your Match works: Shelter personnel conduct an assessment with each dog to determine its friendliness, playfulness, energy level and motivation or drive. Each dog is scored and placed into one of three color-coded maintenance categories: easy (purple), average (orange) or high (green). And within each of those three categories there are three descriptors, such as "life of the party," "wallflower" and "couch potato," all with details about specific behaviors that can be anticipated.

Humans, meanwhile, complete a five-minute, 18-question survey that provides insights into their expectations, previous dog-care experience, lifestyle and home environment. The questionnaire is scored, and the person is assigned a color that correlates with the type of dog or puppy that best fits.

Then an easy stroll through the facility quickly identifies, through the colored cards on each kennel, which dogs are the best fit for that.

As for creating a similar tool for cats, Weiss had to start back at square one. "Cats are a whole different animal," she says, laughing.

Beta testing in five facilities has shown the Feline-ality Meet Your Match program to be highly effective. Feline-ality™ is even helping them succeed in an area shelters struggle with: getting new homes for older cats.

Save Some Pooches in Greensboro—Hurry!

This is a shout-out to the people of Greensboro, NC. If you’re thinking about adopting a pet, now would be a great time to do so—and the Guilford County Animal Shelter is the place to go. Here’s why:

The Greensboro shelter may have to euthanize healthy, adoptable dogs because it must care for 15 pit bulls seized from the property of a man charged with dog fighting and animal cruelty.

"They're taking up 15 cages—that's 15 adoptable animals we can't hold," said Marsha Williams, Guilford County Animal Shelter's executive director. "We have doubled up on some animals."

Since the pit bulls were seized Friday, August 17th, the shelter has euthanized two other dogs with medical conditions because they didn't have cages for them, Williams said. Healthy, adoptable animals also may have to be euthanized, she said, though how many was impossible to predict.

"I couldn't even begin to imagine," she said Thursday. "Every day we have to make that decision based on how many animals come in.”

NYC Pet of the Week: Meet Maddie!

At just 2 1/2 years old, Maddie, a pit bull mix currently awaiting adoption at the ASPCA, is the complete package. Not only is she playful, sweet, affectionate and loyal, she is an extremely intelligent girl who has had a lot of obedience training.

“Maddie needs a lot of exercise and mental stimulation, and loves obedience training,” says the ASPCA’s Trish McMillan, Senior Manager, Animal Behavior. “It would be great if her future owner took her to classes so she can show off what she knows.”

We gave Maddie medical rehabilitation and loving care after our Humane Law Enforcement agents rescued her from neglect. She is now ready to find a caring household where she can be the only pet, enjoy a good game of fetch and receive mental stimulation with clear direction and boundaries.

Come meet this girl who’s got it all at our 92nd Street Adoption Center, or call the Animal Placement department at (212) 876-7700, ext. 4120. To see some of the other animals who are waiting for homes, please visit ASPCA.org.

New Video! ASPCA Charm School: Talented Hounds Abound

On Friday, February 2, the ASPCA Charm School Talent Show for Dogs proved just how adoptable and trainable shelter dogs are. The 13 canine contestants showed off their tricks in front of an enthusiastic audience of television crews, photographers and ASPCA staffers.

Our judges, two-time Tony Award winner Bernadette Peters, radio personality Angie Martinez, The Bachelor’s Prince Lorenzo Borghese and ASPCA Humane Law Enforcement agent Annemarie Lucas, gave their rapt attention to the furry contenders. Dogs were judged on overall presentation, attentiveness to the handler and creativity of the tricks performed.

"The remarkable thing is that these are all dogs who have been rescued from neglectful situations, so they've come so far," says the ASPCA’s Allison Cardona.

Many of these talented contestants are still looking for a home! Please visit our Available Animals page for a full list.

NYC Pet of the Week: Meet Jazzy Joyce!

Looking to make a faithful friend? Meet Jazzy Joyce—she’s all that. Sweet and calm, this four-year-old tortie-colored Norwegian forest cat will climb up onto your lap for some quality time. Like other members of her breed, this feline likes receiving quiet, calm attention from people.

“Jazzy Joyce doesn’t have that crazy kitten behavior, yet is still young enough to be active and play,” says ASPCA Cares’ Allison Cardona. “That’s the nice thing about adult cats—they are loyal but less boisterous companions.”

In addition to providing love, it will be important for Jazzy Joyce’s new owner to ensure that she receives regular medical attention, since she has a hyperactive thyroid gland and needs periodic blood tests. This long-haired lady will also need daily brushing (our medical staff gave her a shave, as you can see in the photo, to remove some mats), and we recommend that she be the only pet in a home with kids ages 12 and up.

Please stop by the ASPCA’s 92nd Street headquarters and experience this sweet girl for yourself. You can also learn more about Jazzy Joyce by calling the Animal Placement department at (212) 876-7700, ext. 4120. NYC Pet of the Week: Meet Diva!

Diva the Rottweiler mix is already a star at our 92nd Street adoption facilities—and very soon the entire world will see her shine, too. Just ask ASPCA’s Victoria Wells, Manager of Shelter Training and Behavior, who handpicked the five-year-old canine to appear on VH1’s Ego Trip’s White Rapper Show.

Although this canine ingénue is new to the biz, we weren’t at all surprised to learn that Diva performed like a true pro during the recent taping, where she was made up and modeled with one of the show’s rappers. “Not only is Diva sweet, she is very smart,” says ASPCA Cares’ Allison Cardona. “She picks things up quickly, and is so easy to train.” And of course, she looked simply smashing in the pretty pink bow she wears on the episode.

NYC Pet of the Week: Meet Artichoke!

ROLL OVER, BEETHOVEN
Are you listening, potential adopters? Artichoke, our super-smart, super-sweet seven-month-old Border Collie mix, will play your heart strings as he shows you how quickly he learns and understands, even without being able to hear very well. “He’s a regular maestro of the dog world, and we can’t get enough of him,” says David Benson, ASPCA Cares.

Although we aren’t sure of the extent of his hearing impairment, our ASPCA Behavior staff can show Artichoke’s new family some simple techniques used to train a hearing-impaired dog. Soon, you’ll have him reading hand signals like notes on a page.

Yes, he’s that intelligent—just ask volunteer Lisa Terezakis. “Look how smart he is,” she says. “And sweet, too!”

Adds Benson, “His quick brain and eagerness to learn make him a perfect fit for anyone looking for an energetic boy with a world of potential. So crank up that Ninth Symphony on your stereo—Artichoke won’t mind—and come on down to meet the maestro.”

If you’d like to know more about this special guy, please call the Animal Placement department at (212) 876-7700, ext. 4120, and come on in and meet Artichoke.

New at the ASPCA Store: "Shelter Dogs" (We love this book!)

Over 50 shelter dog portraits!

From the book Shelter Dogs, Merrell Publishers 2006, photo credit (c) Traer Scott 2006.

While volunteering at shelters, photographer Traer Scott was asked to take photos of the dogs she was working with for records and Internet adoption sites. As her files grew, Scott realized that many of the dogs whose photos she had in her archives never made it out of the shelter alive. “I found that no matter what, I couldn’t bring myself to delete their photos, which were in some cases the only record of their existence,” she says. A few months later, Scott began to create the beautiful, honest portraits that make up Shelter Dogs.

The 96-page book features 50 dogs, their souls and spirits revealed through Scott’s images. The author included notes explaining how each dog came to the shelter and what eventually happened to him or her. As important as it is beautiful, Shelter Dogs is a must for anyone who cares about animals—and anyone who’s ever been to a shelter. Quite simply, we love this book.

NYC Pet of the Week: Meet Ritz Carlton, World's Most Handsome Cat

Looking for the ultimate people cat who’ll greet any and all visitors to your home? We present Ritz Carlton, our resident feline host with the most. The UPS man’s at the door? He’s all over him. Your friendly neighbor? He’ll demand a hearty top-of-the-head scratch. And you, his number-one fan? You’re perfect for leaning up against during grooming sessions and for cuddling with on chilly fall nights.

Like his namesake, this four-year-old flamepoint Siamese mix is majorly accommodating.

“Ritz is very energetic, social and charismatic,” says Dr. Kat Miller of the ASPCA Behavior department. This loving, gentle boy maintains his Hollywood heartthrob looks with lots of exercise, including running, jumping, and fetching. (Get your pitch and arc just right and he’ll leap to snag it mid-air with a Derek Jeter flourish.)

Of course, Ritz’ll need a lot of space for his big personality, and an adopter who’ll spend ample time playing with him. Potential pet parents will need to know that, although Ritz adores people and well-behaved dogs, he’s not a fan of other felines, and must live in a single-cat household.

Can you handle such an unbelievable amount of feline charisma? Of course you can! Please call the Animal Placement department at (212) 876-7700, ext. 4120, and come on down to meet Ritz.

Our Latest Success Story: Okra

Two weeks after Dawn Payne and her husband got married, the couple went to their local animal shelter in Ft. Walton Beach, FL, to find a dog. Or, to be more precise, to find a small dog.

“I had called ahead,” says Dawn, “so when we got to the shelter, they took us back and showed us all of the small dogs they had.” Dawn took care to stop and visit with all of them but, she says, “None of them really spoke to me.”

NYC Pet of the Week: Meet Jacob

“Jacob is a very special dog,” says the ASPCA Behavior department’s Trish McMillian of the eight-year-old Lab/mastiff mix currently on the lookout for his forever home. After a rough start in life, the gentle golden oldie is ready for his retirement. “He would love to just curl up on the couch with you,” says McMillian.

But don’t let Jacob’s age and well-developed “cuddle gene” fool you—our elder statesman hasn’t lost and get-up-and-go. “He would be great on long, leisurely walks,” says McMillian.

Sweet, in shape…and smart, too? Yup, Jacob’s got it all. He knows Sit, Stay, Shake, Come and Down and, reports McMillian, “Being as motivated to learn as he is, we’re sure he can learn even more commands.”

Looking to add a gentle and gallant canine friend to your home? Please call the Animal Placement department at (212) 876-7700, ext. 4120, and come on down to meet Jacob. To see some of the other animals at our shelter who are waiting for homes, please visit ASPCA.org.

This Week's Success Story: Meet Jade

IT WAS JUST MEANT TO BE
Submitted by Kristi Zamzow

This story begins about six years ago, when Kristi Zamzow was a sophomore at Southwest Texas State University. “I was a volunteer at the local animal shelter in San Marcos,” Kristi tells us, “and began spending time with a beautiful yellow Labrador retriever named Jade.” Unable to resist the canine’s adoring eyes and sweet disposition, Kristi promptly fell in love.

And although Kristi couldn’t adopt the dog because she lived in the campus dorms, her parents had 40 acres of land out in the country. She just had to convince her parents…

This Week's Success Story: Meet Bailey

GOOD DOGS COME TO THOSE WHO WAIT

When Sarah and John Hall first began looking for a dog, they knew exactly what they wanted. “We decided that a cocker spaniel would be a good breed for us,” says Sarah, “and we had actually looked into getting a dog from a breeder.”

But when Sarah started to think about it, she had a definite change of heart—and the family opted to adopt from a shelter. “Even if we didn’t get the exact breed we wanted, we’d much rather save an animal’s life,” she tells us.

NYC Pet of the Week: Meet Diamond

Searching for a dog who’ll help you get in touch with your inner diva? Meet Diamond, a golden girl with plenty of sparkle to add to your home.

“This mellow lady is looking for a couch to curl up on and a human friend to cuddle with,” says the ASPCA’s David Benson of the nine-year-old Lhasa Apso. She may be low-maintenance in terms of exercise (no frenzied sessions of fetch or marathon runs necessary for this dainty canine!), but is demanding of something you’ll have to give a lot of—attention and love. “She likes petting,” explains Benson, “and prefers the surroundings of a soft bed to an open field.”

This smart girl knows how to sit and will work for a tasty treat, and would do best as the only dog in the household. Could you be that special someone with whom she can spend her golden years? “If you think you’ve got the stuff to let this Diamond shine, come on down to the ASPCA and meet this terrific lady,” urges Benson.

To find out more about Diamond, please call the Animal Placement department at (212) 876-7700, ext. 4120. To see some of the other animals at our shelter who are waiting for homes, please visit ASPCA.org.

This Week's Success Story: Meet Luckas

WHEN A BLACK CAT CROSSES YOUR PATH…

When Zelda Gerkin was ready to adopt a cat, she and her son headed to their local shelter with a common goal in mind—a black cat. “My hubby has always wanted a black cat,” says Zelda. “But usually when we go to shelters, we never see them.”

On this particular day, however, Zelda remembers, “There were tons!” She told her son to look around and choose one for his dad. “We looked and looked for a long time, and finally we saw a photo on the wall of another cat available for adoption. My son said, ‘Mom, this is the one!’” Zelda was especially glad that the cat was an adult. “I figured, why not give a home to an older animal?”

NYC Pet of the Week: Meet Harley and Big Ben

GOOD HOMES NEEDED, ON THE DOUBLE

Abbott and Costello, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Thelma and Louise, Butch and Sundance…Harley and Big Ben?

Yup, you heard it here first—Harley and Big Ben! “They’re a natural pair,” says the ASPCA’s Barbara McDonald of the two tabby boys currently waiting for adoption at the ASPCA’s 92nd Street headquarters. Although they didn’t come in together, the cats quickly became best friends.

“We were a bit worried about them at first,” says McDonald, who is in charge of Feline Enrichment at the “A.” “But once they paired up, it’s remarkable how much they’ve both come out of their shells.” And together, they’re loving, bonded, sweet and affectionate to people—times two!

If you’re looking to adopt two cats, you certainly won’t have to worry about these guys getting along with each other—or with you. As ASPCA Cares’ David Benson explains, “We all need somebody to lean on, and these two bring out the best in each other. Come on down and meet this dynamic duo. You won’t be sorry!”

To find out more about Harley and Big Ben, please call the Animal Placement department at (212) 876-7700, ext. 4120. To see some of the other animals at our shelter who are waiting for homes, please visit ASPCA.org.

This week's Success Story: Meet Daphne

“EARS” LOOKING AT YOU!
by Jessica Casper

Jessica Casper and her boyfriend had just purchased a home with a yard. But what they really needed? “A dog, of course!” says Jessica.

“I had been wanting one for a long time,” she says, “so after a few months we checked out our local shelter.” Picking the perfect pooch is no easy task, and the couple couldn’t come to a decision—until one very excited shepherd/greyhound mix made the job a whole lot easier.
“Daphne was very playful when they brought her in, but she did eventually lie down,” says Jessica. “And at one point she just looked at me, and I knew she was the one.”

After quickly settling into her new home, Daphne is now a full-fledged member of the family. She loves her daily runs with Jessica’s boyfriend, and cuddling with her pet parents is also high on her list of fun things to do. But her all-time favorite activity? “Sneaking on our bed in the mornings to sleep with us!”

A search online turned up Wyatt, a six-month-old pup who’d been rescued from the hunter who’d bred him. Explains Kari, “The hunter intended to shoot the pup because he was born with blue eyes, instead of the breed-standard brown eyes.” Blue was perfectly fine with Kari, who was very interested in the little guy.

NYC Pet of the Week: Cody

HI, CHIHUAHUA!

“Our sweet boy Cody had a rough start in life,” says ASPCA Cares’ David Benson of the little Chihuahua who was recently rescued by our Humane Law Enforcement agents. “He was very badly physically abused by his owners, and with all that happened to him, you’d think he’d have a grudge against people. But nothing could be further from the truth.”

A favorite among staffers at our 92nd Street headquarters, Cody has impressed everyone with his loving spirit. He tends to be a bit shy at first, explains Trish McMillan of the Animal Behavior department, “But once he knows you, you’re in his club—and that means he’ll let you rub his tummy and he’ll give you kisses in return!” In addition to his human buddies, Cody does well with other dogs his size—and loves kitties, too.

Our behavior team says Cody will do well in a home with another dog who is confident. Explains Benson, “This would help Cody continue the remarkable progress he’s made coming out of his shell and becoming the dog we all know he can be.” Additionally, Cody is a little frightened of walking on the street, but is more than happy to climb into a bag to be close to his person.

FINE AND DANDY

Ever since she moved out of her parents’ home, Ashlee Jordan wanted to get a dog. “Unfortunately,” she explains, “housebreaking a puppy in a second-floor apartment wasn’t an option.” And when her family’s German shepherd, Jazmyn, suddenly fell ill last October, Ashlee was unable to visit her before she went in for exploratory surgery. “When she didn’t survive, I was devastated.”

A few months later, Ashlee and her boyfriend got a call from his family. They had found a dog—an English setter they guessed to be about five years old—abandoned at a gas station. “She was soaked to the bone in the middle of Michigan’s winter-spring transition,” remembers Ashlee. Her boyfriend’s family already had two large dogs, but the problem was easily resolved when the couple went over to meet the canine.

Jumping up on people? Pulling you down the street during walks? Our beautiful lady Erica has no time for funny stuff like that. She’s figured out that looking gorgeous and acting sweet are far better ways to get the attention of her human friends.

“Erica is fluffy, huggable and calm,” says Dr. Kat Miller of the ASPCA Behavior department. The pretty flat-coated retriever/Chow Chow mix prefers long strolls through the park to running on the sidewalk, and would love to curl up and watch a movie on the couch with her new owner.

Adopt Bambi from Meow Mix House!

You've seen her on Meow Mix House, the first-ever cat reality show in which ten kitties from U.S. shelters live together in a specially designed house in New York City as they vie for the title of Feline Vice President of Research and Development. Although you can catch the project on three-minute segments on Animal Planet now through August 18, the cats' time together is coming to a close—and Bambi, our ASPCA shelter cat, is looking for some new digs.

The four-year-old brown tabby girl hails from the Big Apple and, like many New Yorkers, she's inquisitive, social and quite independent. Bambi loves to be around her people and other cats, and would be an excellent addition to any cat-loving household. True, she's a star, but this girl's no diva—we promise she checked her ego at the Meow Mix House door!
