ASPCA Pet of the Week: Lover Boy

Cat

Chivalry isn’t dead, thanks to a four-year-old orange tabby. Meet Morris. Ever the gentleman, he believes in old-fashioned romance. Head rubs are permitted on the first date, but he is the type to court his adopter before he takes the relationship too far—you know, rolling over on his back and purring.

And just like some modern-day lover boys, Morris gets cold paws just before he’s greeted at the door. “He’s a little nervous in new situations, but very sweet,” says Katie Watts, Feline Behavior Counselor.

But don’t worry—he won’t love you and leave you. Morris isn’t interested in playing the field. All he wants is to settle down in a “quiet household, with someone who wants some cuddle time.”

If you think you are a match for Morris, please call (212) 876-7700, ext. 4120. To see other animals who are waiting for homes, please visit the ASPCA Adoption Center online.

Bet You Didn’t Know MLK’s Smartest Statement of All

Happy Martin Luther King Day! If Dr. King were here today, he would surely remind you of his dream that animals should not be judged by the color of their fur, but by the content of their character.

Spirit

Maybelle

Tulip

All three of these feline superstars are available at the ASPCA Adoption Center. From top to bottom, their names are Spirit, Maybelle and Tulip.

We can all take a lesson from cats, who don’t judge others based on color. Scent, however, is another story. But they’re working on that.

ASPCA Pet of the Week: Me Tarzan. Me Available.

Tarzan Naturally, we think all of the cats who enter the ASPCA Adoption Center are beautiful. But once in a while, someone comes along who takes our breath away! Meet Tarzan, a Siamese/Bengal cat with an amazing beige marble pattern on his fur. Tarzan is a truly extraordinary sight! Not just because of his looks—we love to witness the affection he has for his feline friends.

Tarzan has spent most of his two years of life with other kitties. “He grew up around cats and loves them dearly, so he needs a nice brother or sister in his adopted home,” says Amy Geduldig, ASPCA Manager, Media & Communications. Tarzan knows he’s into the feline kind. People, however, he is still unsure about! (Who can blame him?) He’s a bit shy and will take some time to warm up to his new humans.

A sweet housecat who looks like an exotic jungle animal? Cool! To adopt this unique feline, please call (212) 876-7700, ext. 4120. To see other animals who are waiting for homes, please visit the ASPCA Adoption Center online.

ASPCA Pet of the Week: Love Guru

MenunuIt’s no wonder that Menunu is a bit pudgy, considering he has the word “menu” in his name! It’s not that Menunu is adverse to exercise—he simply prefers yoga to cardio. Six years old and content in his fur, he loves the chance to stretch his paws and sit in the middle of the room, enjoying the space and peacefully observing his surroundings.

Menunu has been dubbed a Sidekick by Katie Watts, ASPCA Feline Behavior Counselor.

“I love Mr. Pudge! He's the best! He's perfect for someone who wants a cat who has it all (in a really big, cuddly package),” beams Watts. Menunu would love to be your constant companion as you roam about your home, and provide you the quiet comfort you seek after a long, hard day. Everything about Menunu is relaxing; his black fur, his quiet purrs—even his soft meows.

Potential parents should be aware that Menunu will need to be on a special diet, probably for the rest of his life. If you are into the serene scene and would like to meet Menunu, please call the ASPCA Animal Placement department at (212) 876-7700, ext. 4120. 53?? What? No Way!

“Home for the holidays” has been given new meaning. This weekend we broke our own record in cat adoptions—53 cats went home over the weekend! Many of them were older cats who often get overlooked for the young ‘uns. We attribute this successful weekend to our Free Over Three campaign. Cats three years or older were free—regular adoption procedure applied, of course.

Macy Harriet

Macy and Harriet are two of our long-time cats who now have a permanent residence!

What’s the mood like around the A right now? Tears, joy, celebration—and more happy words like that! Big kudos to our adoptions staff and volunteers who truly outdid themselves and brought love to a lot of lives, both furry and human.

So what does this incredible adoptions feat mean for the holidays? 53 families will have to move breakable ornaments to the top of their tree to make way for the prettiest “ornament” of all to sleep under the lights. 53 families will have to hide the holiday grub from thievin’ paws. 53 families will admire their beautiful gift-wrapping jobs only to have their bows undone and the paper shredded by their newest lovable rascal! And 53 families will learn what holiday magic really means—hearts will be full and households complete, thanks to the rescue of a homeless shelter cat. They won’t be able to imagine spending another holiday without kitty.

ASPCA Pet of the Week: Siamese, If You Please

Marvelous Maybelle is a stunning Siamese mix, if you please. And because she’s mostly blind, her other senses are in tip-top shape. She’s got looks, she’s got smarts, she’s got purrsonality—all that, and she’s as humble and sweet as your average kitty next door.

“Maybelle is extremely affectionate and sweet with people,” says Katie Watts, ASPCA Feline Behavior Counselor. And she doesn’t need perfect eyesight to navigate her environment. “She still gets around great and always uses her litter box,” Watts assures potential adopters.

Because of her poor vision, Maybelle does get scared around other animals, and is looking to be the sole furry inhabitant of her new abode. Won’t you be her eyes in exchange for her purrs? If you’d like to provide Maybelle a safe haven for life, please call the ASPCA Animal Placement department at (212) 876-7700, ext. 4120. To see other animals who are waiting for homes, please visit the ASPCA Adoption Center online.

Free Over Three? Wheeee!

It’s ba-aaack! Once again, the ASPCA Adoption Center is holding free cat adoptions! If you want to adopt a cat who is three or older, head on over this weekend, December 6-7, or next weekend, December 13-14. The cats reside at 424 East 92nd St. between York and 1st Avenues—that is, until you give a kitty a new change of address!

Don’t worry, we won’t “give” a cat to just anyone. While potential adopters don’t have to audition in front of a panel of feline judges (although if cats had it their way, this might be the case!), regular adoption procedure will still follow. We just want to give our beloved older felines a shot at happiness, since they’re used to the kittens stealing their thunder.

For details, check out our press release.

Psst. Tulip and Lenny are waiting for you, along with the rest of the gang.

ASPCA Pet of the Week: Let the Sun Shine for Midnight!

Midnight“She sits on the desks and file cabinets! Just like a houseplant, only prettier,” chuckles Kristi Templeton, ASPCA Animal Behavior Counselor, when asked why Midnight would make a good pet. Midnight is currently being fostered in the ASPCA Adoption Center office by a handful of staff behaviorists; this mellow gal laps up all the attention in her own quiet way.

But don’t worry—you needn’t be a behaviorist to know and love this quintessential feline. All Midnight needs is a good windowsill to curl up on and she’ll be content to soak up the sunshine. “She’d do well in a home with a person as quiet as she is,” adds Templeton.

Our eight-year-old beauty, named for her extravagant black fur, was brought to the ASPCA when her owner moved to a new home where cats weren’t allowed. After spending her whole life as a housecat, she’s a bit out of sorts at our Adoption Center. If you’d like to return Midnight to her rightful role as a kitty princess, please call the ASPCA Animal Placement department at (212) 876-7700, ext. 4120. Please note: Midnight came to us declawed.

ASPCA Pet of the Week: Join Macy's Parade

MacyJust call her MacGyver—you know, that extremely resourceful secret agent on TV! “Macy can make a toy out of just about anything,” says Katie Watts, ASPCA Feline Behavior Counselor. A simple item such as a food dish or a paper towel roll has been known to bring her hours of entertainment!

Dubbed Leader of the Band by our behaviorists, Macy isn’t content to sit around and twiddle her paws. In her spare time she likes to play, run, jump…and play some more. In between sprints, the two-year-old girl takes quick breaks to lie on her side for a rub—then it’s back to her self-conjured adventures. “She is very high-energy and needs lots of extra playtime, but she sure is entertaining!” says Watts.

This singular feline isn’t fond of other cats and is anxious for more room to roam, despite all of the extra social time our volunteers give her. Macy’s looking for a piece of prime real estate that comes with a loving and devoted human. “A single-cat household with a fun, energetic person is exactly what she needs,” Watts assures us.

If you’d like to shake your sillies out with Macy, please call the ASPCA Animal Placement department at (212) 876-7700, ext. 4120. To see other animals who are waiting for homes, please visit the ASPCA Adoption Center online.

ASPCA Pet of the Week: Executive Decisions

catWhen it comes to making decisions, Regina is a professional. Perhaps the young tabby prides herself on her Executive Cat status, as dubbed by our behaviorists. To give you some examples, she decides which humans get to hear her purr. And when she plays with her humans, she decides the precise moments when all petting and cooing will begin, cease and resume.

Regina would do well with an experienced cat adopter who can read feline body language. “She's more of the independent type, so she’d be great for someone who wants a fun, playful cat—but who won't be in their personal space all the time,” says Katie Watts, ASPCA Feline Behavior Counselor. The black-and-white beauty decided she’s not a fan of other cats, so she’s looking for a home she doesn't have to share.

If you are a decision maker like Regina and need to fill the number-one spot on your kitty agenda, please call the ASPCA Animal Placement department at (212) 876-7700, ext. 4120. To see other animals who are waiting for homes, please visit the ASPCA Adoption Center online.

Amy Wuvs Tulip

We have a guest blogger! Amy Geduldig, ASPCA Media & Communications Manager, has been on a personal mission to find Tulip a home. You can always find Amy plugging the feisty kitty on her Facebook and MySpace pages, and she’ll talk about Tulip to anyone who’ll listen. So listen up!

Amy holding Tulip
Amy says:

On the fifth floor at the ASPCA Headquarters on 92nd Street, NYC, there lives a cat with nine lives—and nine personalities to match them. Her name is Tulip, and I’m one of the lucky few who gets to hang out with her during the week.

You may wonder why Tulip has the run of the fifth floor and doesn’t live downstairs with the ASPCA’s crew of cats. It’s simple. Tulip is a free spirit who simply doesn’t fit into dormitory-style living.

Over two years ago Tulip was rescued by our Humane Law Enforcement agents—a small, scraggly kitten—unloved and unwanted. As she’s grown, so has her personality. She can be sweet, she can be salty. She can be playful, she can be lazy. She can be affectionate, she can be aloof. She can be all of these things at once. That is what makes her one of my favorites.

Whoever adopts this beautiful girl is guaranteed to be entertained. You will have a best friend who likes to sit with you while you work, keeps you on your toes when you’re not paying attention, and understands the importance of personal space and quiet time.

Tulip isn’t for everyone. Young children will scare her. Friendly cats and dogs will annoy her. But, if you have a quiet, loving home (and a respectful dog or cat), then I hope one of you will consider opening your home to a little ragamuffin whose heart is as big (if not bigger) than her larger-than-life personality.

Everyone on the fifth floor will be tickled as pink as her nose.

*If you're interested in adopting Tulip, please call the ASPCA Animal Placement department at (212) 876-7700, ext. 4120. To see other animals who are waiting for homes, please visit the ASPCA Adoption Center online.

ASPCA Presents Cat Vs. Dog ‘08

There’s no hiding—election talk is on the tongues around the nation, even the wagging tongues of our furry friends! So if you can’t beat ‘em…join ‘em! We’re holding our very own election for a four-legged President. (Hey, this is supposed to be the year of change, right?) Check out CATvsDOG.org and see what the ASPCA candidates have to say about the most pressing issues concerning animals. Watch them duke it out over animal welfare issues such as puppy mills, “dangerous breed” bans, pets and family violence through the eyes of candidates.

Candiate

The candidates and their slogans are:

Mittens the Cat: “She takes no cat naps while fighting abuse!”

and

Rowdy the Dog: “100% loyal to the cause against cruelty.”

**SPOILER ALERT: During their debate, Rowdy votes against dog fighting.

Fun as our election is, it does have a purpose. “The goal of the nationwide online campaign is to incite one million Americans to sign a pledge to prevent cruelty and abuse,” said ASPCA President & CEO Ed Sayres. “By signing the pledge and casting their vote, people are helping the ASPCA ensure animals have a voice in the upcoming election.” When the election is over, we’ll deliver one million signatures to the newest resident of the White House. We hope our efforts will influence lawmakers to put animal welfare on the agenda.” Psst, we're up to nearly 400,000 signatures. Almost halfway there!

While you’re on CatvsDog.org, don’t forget to take the Presidential Pet Quiz, a fun trivia game about past presidents and their pets.

Who will get your vote? If you can’t decide, ask your pet. (Two barks for Rowdy, a purr for Mittens).

ASPCA Pet of the Week: Diamond in the Rough

CatWhen Vincent first arrived at the ASPCA Adoption Center, we soon realized that it would take him a while to warm up to people. “He came in so scared that he was shaking. He would cringe every time someone tried to touch him,” recalls Katie Watts, ASPCA Feline Behavior Counselor.

As it turned out, Vincent discovered in just a few weeks that he does indeed like those wacky large things called humans! He’s no dummy—“As soon as you start scratching his head (his favorite spot), he just melts and starts purring,” Katie tells us. “This guy really is a diamond in the rough!” He may still be a little shy with new people, but one thing Vincent’s not is camera shy! When he sees a picture-snapping gizmo, he promptly sticks his nose directly in the lens (making it quite difficult to snap a photo).

This striking beaut “needs a nice quiet home with a patient, loving and quiet human companion,” says Katie. He may be picky, but if you win his heart, he’ll be an amazing pet. If you’re interested in adopting Vincent, please call the ASPCA Animal Placement department at (212) 876-7700, ext. 4120. NYC Adoption Success Story: Graham Central Station

CatIn early September, Manhattan resident Layla Alvandi met her new roommate, Graham, in the cattery at the ASPCA Adoption Center. A tough cookie with a tender middle, the two-year-old cat had waited patiently for months to meet a friend he could count on.

The orange love bug—formerly known as Monroe—first arrived at the ASPCA in rough shape. He was rescued as a stray wandering the outer borough streets of the Bronx and suffering from a head wound. Veterinarians at the ASPCA’s Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital performed surgery to fix the wound, which was likely self-inflicted from excessive scratching. But even after a speedy recovery, this brave cat still struggled with skin allergies that required a hypoallergenic diet.

Graham’s special needs were hardly a deterrent for Layla, who, on first meeting, thought he was very special indeed. “He is seriously the best cat!” she says. “He loves belly rubs and playing fetch with his little toy mouse. And now he likes to sleep with his head on my stomach or in the crook of my arm.”

Though he came from the streets, Graham is a lap cat by nature and, according to his pet mama, has the biggest purr for a tiny body. And his adventurer’s spirit still thrives—after days spent trying to open a closet door in his new home, he finally succeeded. “He got stuck in the storage area above my clothes,” Layla describes. “When I came to get him, he jumped on my shoulder and rode around for awhile.”

Finally this special cat has found a shoulder to lean on, and Layla, for her part, has found a loving mate. “I’m so grateful to the ASPCA for taking such good care of him for eight months,” she says, “so I had a chance to find him.”

When Cats Meet Baby

Elyse is back and ready to report on life with two cats and a newborn!

A few months ago, when I was very pregnant, I asked for your advice on the ASPCA Online Community—how do I keep my cats out of the crib? Community members offered me great tips on kitty deterrents. Alas, nothing worked…until I gave birth. Apparently a baby is the ultimate kitty deterrent.

When we brought Melody home from the hospital, we put her in her bassinet. Bruce and Maow, my orange tabby brother-and-sister duo, came over for a sniff. Up until then, the bassinet had been their territory (despite my best efforts). What was this little pink thing doing in their bed? After a few minutes of exploring, they sashayed away. Perhaps they lost interest. Or perhaps they understood that this was a baby, fragile and in need of protection. All I know is, from that moment on, the cats never again set paw in either the bassinet or the crib.

I can’t say the same for Melody’s toys or her stroller.

Cat on playmat

When the kid’s away, the cat will play.

Cats in stroller

Caught in the act.

Melody, now three months old, shows no interest in her orange brother and sister, but I look forward to watching them become friends. I imagine “cat” will be among her first words. Right now, my cat kids do little more than sniff her now and then, but soon enough they’ll learn she has a limitless supply of cuddling and playing energy, as all kids should—and do—have.

My cats aren’t exactly what you’d call good cats. I’d go as far as calling them pretty darn naughty cats. If there is wooden furniture, they will scratch it. If there’s an open drawer, they will empty it. If there are chicken bones, they will try to steal them. They are only two years old and still full of kitten energy, zipping and leaping around the apartment, not knowing the word “obstacle.” But when they met the baby, they intuitively knew to behave around her. They are gentle and move slowly in her presence. They remind me of Marley in John Grogan’s Marley & Me. I was moved to tears when Grogan described how “the world’s worst dog” was soft and kind as could be with his babies. How do these furry little ones know? Is it something we, as their owners, are doing right? Do babies have the gift of touching everyone? Maybe. But I say the credit goes to the animals themselves, and their beautiful instincts to nurture young life. Quite magical, really.

Kitty Counterparts: Ellen and Portia

Kittens Ellen and Portia
Recently, as part of a wedding gift basket for animal lover/ASPCA supporter Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi, we included a photograph of two adoptable kittens we named after the couple. Ellen received the gift basket, and will be featuring the photograph of her kitty counterparts on her talk show tomorrow. She'll give an update on whether the kittens have been adopted (take a wild guess!), and she will discuss the importance of adoption.

To see the kitties, tune in to The Ellen DeGeneres Show on NBC tomorrow, September 17, at 3:00 P.M. EST. Find out when the show is airing in your area!

"Ellen has been a great friend to both animals and the ASPCA. We are thrilled about her recent wedding and wanted to help celebrate in the only way we knew how--help save more animals!" says Jo Sullivan, ASPCA Senior Vice President, Development and Communications, who recently appeared on Ellen's show for an episode that promoted animal adoption.

Check out photos from Ellen and Portia's wedding! The first pic on this page features two canines-appropriately dressed in black and white, of course.

ASPCA Pet of the Week: It's Tabbi Time!

TabbiLooking for the inside scoop on the ASPCA? You can always talk to Tabbi, a lovely kitty who’s been at our Adoption Center for over a year and a half. But really, all she'll tell you is that while she's gotten top-rate care here, she is yearning for a place to call her own. This black-and-white looker "is very, very deserving of a loving home," says Katie Watts, ASPCA Feline Behavior Counselor. "It's definitely her turn to get adopted!"

Three-year-old Tabbi is a bit shy when she meets new people, but she warms up quickly. "Sweet and mellow, she could use someone to just curl up and cuddle with," Watts tells us. We wonder if this awesome feline hasn't been adopted yet because she hasn’t found someone willing to give her daily medication for inflammatory bowel disease and regularly check her eyes for infections.

Please don't feel intimidated at having to take on Tabbi's minor medical problems. Her love will be the best reward indeed! If you're interested in adopting this good girl, please call the ASPCA Animal Placement department at (212) 876-7700, ext. 4120. ASPCA Pet of the Week: Heeeere’s…Jonny!

JonnyDreaming of a confident kitty who’s always up for a good time? Give Jonny a go. An extreme extrovert, he loves to frolic with other cats and keeps it lively long after the show’s over.

“Jonny is a rough-and-tumble cat who will play for hours and never get tired,” says Katie Watts, ASPCA Feline Behavior Counselor. “He has an affectionate side, too, and is often one of the first to greet visitors in his habitat. He'd usually rather play than sit on your lap, though.”

Our fun-loving Jonny suffers from inflammatory bowel syndrome, and would love to meet someone who’s both attentive to his needs and ready to party. If you’re interested in adopting this cool cat, please call the ASPCA Animal Placement department at (212) 876-7700, ext. 4120. ASPCA Pets of the Week: It Takes Two!

Domino the cat
Domino
Want some feline affection, times two? Look no further than Domino and Murphy, best friends and partners for life. Domino is a ten-year-old black-and-white boy on the reserved side; Murphy’s all feminine charm. She’s a sweet seven-year-old with gentle tiger markings and a petting fetish.Murphy the cat
Murphy

“This duo loves to lounge!” says Kalie Dominguez, intern at the ASPCA’s Mobile Spay/Neuter Clinic and the kitties’ foster friend. “Murphy won’t leave your lap, and big boy Domino likes to hang out at your feet and hope for a belly rub. If it comes down to it, they’ll get vocal for attention.”
Domino and Murphy prefer to meet someone who respects their bond and appreciates the quiet life. If you’re interested in adopting this precious pair, please call the ASPCA Animal Placement department at (212) 876-7700, ext. 4120. ME-WOW! The Best Cat Photos of 2008!

The weekend’s almost here, and what better way to usher in Caturday than by celebrating the winners of the Adopt-A-Shelter Cat Month Photo Contest? Back in June, we asked you to catch your cat in the act—of being a cat! You know…attacking dust bunnies, harassing the dog, playing guitar…whatever he does when thinks you’re not looking.

Uh, playing guitar?

Yup! The photo featuring that talented feline was especially pleasing to our judge, musical legend Michael Feinstein. But like any self-respecting cat lover, he couldn’t pick just one winner. See all the 2008 Cat Photo Contest winners and honorable mentions here!

ASPCA Pet of the Week: Fish Out of Water

Looking for a playmate by land and sea? Meet Flounder, a five-year-old black-and-white explorer who leaps tall furniture in a single pounce. A water bowl diver, this kitty finds the meaning of life in a good romp, but always knows when to say when.

“Flounder’s a tough kitty!” says Margaret McLaughlin, Director of Veterinary Technicians at the ASPCA’s Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital. “He believes he's a dog, and loves to play ball and catch, and snooze in shopping bags. He investigates everyone who comes into my office, and will politely let you know when he is tired of playing with you.”

Though our fun-loving Flounder is playful and charming, he doesn’t much care for the canine kind and would prefer to live in a single cat household. If you’re interested in adopting this feisty feline, please call the ASPCA Animal Placement department at (212) 876-7700, ext. 4120. Foreclosures Can Be Bad News For Pets

Stories of families who have lost their homes and find themselves no longer able to keep their pets continue to pour in from around the United States. In New Haven, CT, where foreclosures have gone up 80 percent in the past year, local animal shelters receive an average of a call per day from someone who wants to surrender a pet. In Michigan, the Anti-Cruelty Society shelter has seen a 30-percent intake increase over the same period. And last week, the City of Los Angeles, CA, issued a press release revealing that LA Animal Service’s intake of pets rose 16 percent in the first four months of 2008.

California—arguably one the of states hit hardest by the subprime mortgage market collapse—is leading the way in the creation of new legislation that attempts to address this issue. The California State Legislature is now considering Assembly Bill 2949, which would allow bank representatives to immediately seek potentially life-saving help for animals abandoned at foreclosed properties. The bill was introduced by Assemblyman Mark DeSaulnier, and is cosponsored by the ASPCA and the California Animal Association.

“The ASPCA urges pet parents faced with foreclosure to bring their pets to a proper animal shelter if unable to place them with friends or family,” says Californian Jill Buckley, ASPCA Senior Director of Legislative Services. “With the increasing numbers of property abandonments, more and more animals are being left behind to fend for themselves. This bill will help these animals obtain the proper care and attention they need.”

AB 2949 will be heard by the full California Assembly as soon as this week, and will then move to the Senate for consideration. Please visit our pressroom to read more about California AB 2949.

Adoption Diaries: I Think I'll Go For a Walk Outside Now...

Elyse's Adoption Diary:

I can officially walk level one (easy) dogs at the ASPCA adoption center now! This weekend I completed my training. Dog Captain Neal Kushner, who generously donates his time on Saturdays to train new volunteers on dog walking, gave us a whopping 3-hour lesson. After giving his table talk, Neal took us out to walk Cookie.

Cookie is a darling 7-year-old pit mix with unusually large ears for her breed! She was a delight to walk with outside--cooperative and inquisitive. All three of us in training took turns walking her...and guess which one of us got the honor of demonstrating her first poop scooping?

I returned to the adoption center yesterday. There seem to be a whole lot of puppies there right now! Speaking of puppies, Bella's bunch are growing beautifully. Here, see for yourself!

Remember how small they were in my last photo?

My 'lil video clip du jour is of Zena. I didn't get to know her well, but I hung with her long enough to fall in love with that amazing tongue of hers! Observe her conversation with a dog mate:

Don't worry, I didn't neglect the cats! (As if!) Of course, I made my usual trip to the "fat cat habitat" and hung with Whitney (guys, why is she still there? Did you NOT see last week's purr video??). Whitney's buddy Missy turned out to be a real mush ball too. Give her a head rub and she's golden.

Over in Habitat 1 is Fresca. She likes to hang out in the window and observe NYC foot traffic, and she apparently also likes to pose for photographs.

Adoption Diaries: Reunited!

Elyse's Adoption Diary

Whitney's back in her habitat! For those who don't recall, Whitney is the fabulous white cat I fell for weeks back. I had to endure a couple weeks without her as I waited for her to recover from her upper respiratory infection. Now, she's back and purrier than ever. I had to take a video so you could hear this loud motor for yourself. Observe:

My favorite part is toward the end, when you see her rest her head on my lap.

I implore you, give her a good home! As much as I'll miss her, I'll be thrilled to see her gone. This 4-year-old white love ball is waiting for the chance to make someone very happy and spoiled. I'd take her myself if my own cats would let me.

Aaaaand this is Tulip. Tulip has been here at the ASPCA for almost 2 years. She was rescued by our Humane Law Enforcement officers, who found her scarily emaciated. They took her back to the ASPCA, and within a week, she regained 48% of her weight! That's half a Tulip! Now, I must admit she has a pretty good life, living in a corner office and getting pampered all day by the corporate folks who work on her floor.

Everybody stopped me to tell me how much they loved Tulip and to please get her adopted (so come on, people, my reputation is at stake). Even though Tulip likes "her" office, Tulip needs a great home, a place she doesn't wonder where everyone went off to on weekends and national holidays. Besides, we want to give other cats a chance to be an office foster.

Hey, I have two more adoptions to report! Gomez, a wonderful and kind cat, and a little funny pooch, Hedley, found homes. Thanks for all the warm comments you've sent about these guys! Keep up the good work! Who knows, you may have helped guide their adopters to them.

Adoption Diaries: Litter Your Life with Love

Elyse's Adoption Diary:

There really ought to be a warning...I was walking down Bark Avenue (at our adoption center), and turned the corner, and boom! There they were--a litter of nursing puppies! Can you say cuteness overload? It was almost too much for my heart to take!

The only thing better than puppies are ones getting their breakfast from mama. This is Bella. Doesn't she look proud?

And this is Chewy (no, not from Star Wars). Chewy's another silly one. The little Yorkie made himself right at home on my lap. Fuzzy, sweet and curious, he's everything that's wonderful about small dogs. As I headed for the door after our cuddle session, he whimpered, "Don't leave me."
Jazzy Joyce has been here since June of 2006. She's a sensitive 10-year-old, and prefers to be petted on her head. Jazzy was treated for an overactive thyroid gland in September. She's still working on growing back her fur, but I don't know, I think she looks pretty cool without it.

I'm pleased two report that two animals I've mentioned here previously have been adopted! Pocahontas, the sweet old cat, and Cola, the sweet old dog! This was a good week for our seniors!

Adoption Diaries: They're the Pits!

Elyse's Adoption Diary:

This is Oreo, 3 months old. He wasn't too interested in the idea of leaving his cage. That is, of course, until I took him out and we played for a few minutes. When I dared return him to his kitty condo, he made quite a scene. He wanted out! As I played with other cats, he jumped all around and kept sticking his nose and paws out of the holes, like you see in the pic, and yelling at me. Poor thing looked so pathetic and desperate that he made me feel guilty...I eventually gave in and let him back out.

And here is Pocahontas (I'm desperately trying to refrain from making any silly puns or references to the legendary Native American princess). Pocahontas loved to pose for me like a statue. See? And when I put her in my lap, I knew she'd have stayed there forever if she had a choice. She definitely wouldn't be there if she were younger (she's 12).

Gomez was incredibly difficult to get a photo of, but for the sweetest reason. I couldn't get far away enough to take a picture because the little love bug shadowed my every step! He wanted some up close and personal rubbing. Finally, I broke out the cat dancer toy -- here he is above, ready to attack.

Now, on to the doggies. I got to witness something really neat -- Special Agent Ruiz (you may recognize him from "Animal Precinct") brought three pit puppies in. He had just rescued them from the Bronx. These guys were so anxious to eat they consumed their food in seconds! Just look at them playing! All together now: awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww.

I thought I'd leave you with a treat: this is 2-month-old Norma, who was intrigued by my camera. If you listen carefully, you can hear her loud purr. She was adopted by the time I left. They go so quickly when they're that little and cute. It's the older ones who really need help, the poor darlings!

A Star is Adopted!

Many of the staff at the ASPCA adoption center got to know and love Rocket. He was the huge orange tiger cat who was being fostered in the office of our Senior Vice President, Gail Buchwald. Rocket, however, lived by the “don’t fence me in” philosophy and adopted the 3rd floor Animal Placement area as his entire domain. He could often be found lounging in the “in-basket,” keeping a watch over everything. We knew Rocket was destined for special things and needed a home where his high level of intelligence would be challenged.

Victoria Wells, of our Behavior staff, thought Moscow Cats Theatre might be a perfect fit. She not only arranged Rocket's "audition," but she conducted a site visit and interviewed the people involved to confirm that this was a loving, caring and low-stress adoptive situation for Rocket.

Rocket went for a two-week foster period with the Moscow Cats Theatre and it went great—he was officially adopted! He lives in the home of the producer and trainer for the show and has bonded with them, and is doing great with the other cats. Now that he is bonded with the people he will be taught to perform one or two tricks and to begin his performance career.

Rocket, ever the star of the ASPCA Adoption Center, now has a home with Moscow Cats Theatre

Katherine Miller, also of our Behavior staff, has seen the show and found it very entertaining as well as respectful of the animals. All the cats are trained and rewarded with food rewards, never aversives. Each cat learns just one or two special tricks to perform during the show so they don't have a demanding performance schedule. No cat is forced to perform and if they choose to leave and go backstage they can (and do!). Neither, she nor Victoria detected any fear or stress behaviors among the cats; they were not only relaxed but actually playful and very eager to earn the reward. All the cats live with members of the performance family. They are carefully selected for an outgoing personality so that they are not stressed by being in the show.

A quote from Kat Miller says it all: ”It was a real team effort to arrange this very special placement for a very special cat. We wish our friend Rocket all the best.”

Adoption Diaries: All About Dogs

Elyse's Adoption Diary:

Come on, what's cuter than a litter of brand new kittens?

I met these little guys yesterday. They are being fostered in the office of Barbara MacDonald, who is Volunteer Coordinator, Feline Enrichment, at the ASPCA Adoption Center. I don't know how she gets any work done (but she does--she's fabulous!).

After I pried myself away from the kittens, I headed on over to Bark Avenue to play with some doggies. When I walked into Cola's room (which is bigger than my cubicle), Cola greeted me on her hind legs, her ears straight in the air. This funny girl cracked me up--she was more intrigued by my notepad than me, until she realized I give head rubs and my notepad doesn't. When I dared to stop rubbing, she thrust her head into my hands to tell me, "Don't even think about stopping."

Cola is such a sweet girl. The only reason she hasn't been adopted is she's 11, and of course people typically go for the young 'uns. But look at her! How can you resist those giant eyes and that silly underbite! It looks like she has fangs, which is almost scary 'til she starts licking you all over the place like the goofball she is.

Honorable mentions go to Hedley and Eva, two more small dogs who share a room.

Isn't Eva just the silliest little Shih Tzu? And Hedley's got that unbearable "please take me home" face. Ooh, I just want to squish them!

After I had my doggie fix, I went to the cat habitat to visit Whitney, whom I'd been thinking about all week. I was so looking forward to seeing her, but sadly, just as I got there, an animal technician was taking her to the doctor upstairs. I'm keeping my paws crossed for her, and hoping I can see her next week and hear that tremendous purr of hers.

At least I got to play with Harriet. You may recall, I started writing about her last week.

As you can see, she still needs to lose weight, but she's been working very hard on her diet and looks better already! Her coat is really stunning in person. Her colors are quite vibrant and lovely.

That's all for now. Check in next week to read about more animals at our adoption center and get updates on these guys!

Adoption Diaries: Getting To Know You

Elyse's Adoption Diary:

This week I began socializing cats at our adoption center after joining other volunteers in a cat class. My plan is to bring you weekly updates of the cats I get to know. Why? The most important reason is to give these cats some much needed PR, of course (maybe you readers will want to adopt someone!). The other reason is, frankly, I wanted an excuse to gush about kitties and doggies! I'm still in dog training (more on that next week).

So, the cats of the A: Some cats are in cages (really nice, modern ones that don't haver bars!) and others are in habitats. Habitats are spacious rooms that house cats who can freely roam about and interact with each other.

Yesterday, I walked into what I've dubbed the "fat cat habitat." The overweight cats are put together, of course, because they are on similar diets. I made my rounds, patting kitties one by one. Suddenly I heard a gigantic rumble. Purrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. I turned around and saw Whitney frantically trying to get me to come back and pay more attention to her. She stuck her head out as far as it could go, wanting some more ear rubs . Whitney is a 4-year-old stunning snow-white girl. I LOVE white cats! "Ok, Ok!" I told her. "Relax, I'm coming!"

I scooped Whitney up into my arms and carried her to the socialization area. I sat down and she plopped herself on my lap. I'm not kidding, this girl has the loudest purr I've ever heard. Oh man, I'm so in love.

As I played with Whitney, another cat, Harriet, investigated the stuffed meerkat I had on the floor by my purse. Harriet's a cutie--she mostly lounges, but does have little spurts of playful energy. Like when she sees a meerkat. Harriet has been with us since Sept. 06--needless to say, she can really use a home.

I wandered into the next habitat and found Pierre. Pierre is a beautiful boy, here since March 06. He has an old scar with fur missing between his shoulder blades. He'd love to go home with another cat from his habitat or join a household that already has other felines. Pierre is one chill dude.

Here's Pierre coming toward me with that swanky walk and "come hither" eyes.

This is Smokie. Smokie is being fostered in an office by two employees--Karen Lopez, Manager of Shelter Staff and Trish Suess, Intake Assistant. The second I walked in he started purring and licking me (maybe he could tell I had pizza just before?). Smokie is a cuddly mushball who loves to explore--especially boxes. His foster moms said he's getting pretty bored and is needing a home, like, yesterday. I don't blame him! Usually folks get to leave an office after working all day! And he works very, very hard. I hear he's about to be promoted.

See, Told Ya Cats Were Sweet

If you want to know the truth about the mysterious ways of felines, ask your cat. Cat won’t talk to you? Well, neither will ours. We had to settle for getting some info from the second-best source—their human roommates.

Last month, in order to complement the launch of Feline-ality™, the kitty component of the ASPCA®’s Meet Your Match™ shelter adoptions program, we invited cat lovers across the country to take a fun online survey detailing adventures in life and love with their kitties.
Nearly 12,000 people responded, and get this— when 50 percent of pet parents called their cat’s name, rather than yawning, their kitty’s response was akin to: “Here I am, bright-eyed and bushy tailed!”

Harumph. And cats get a bad rep for being aloof. Way to show ‘em, kitties. By the way, it’s much more rewarding when your cat comes running to you than when a dog does. Most dogs will run to anyone, but with a cat—you’ve gotta earn it.

Check out more of our surprising and funny survey findings.

Pet Nutrition Q & A: Vegan Diet for Cats

A friend of mine who is vegan feeds her cats a vegan diet. Is this safe?―Barbara
At the ASPCA we recognize that there are many quality dietary options for pet parents to choose from, Barbara. However, we do not recommend vegetarian or vegan diets for cats. Cats are true carnivores with unique nutritional needs. They require nutrients that are not available from plant sources. At first, they may appear to be doing satisfactorily on vegetarian or vegan diets, but over time nutritional deficiencies may occur. Even the Vegetarian Society cautions against these diets for cats. When it comes to felines, it really is best to provide a diet that includes meat.

Pet Nutrition Q & A: Finicky Feline

My cat only eats his food when I sit beside him and pet during his meal. If I don't do this, he takes sporadic bites and cries at his food bowl, but won't actually eat. How can I change this behavior? ―Sarah

We would recommend taking your cat to the veterinarian to rule out a medical or dental problem, Sarah. If your veterinarian believes your pet is healthy and concludes that this is a behavioral problem, we would recommend you gradually fade yourself out of your cat's mealtimes. In order to make this easier for him, you may consider adding some canned tuna, tuna water or another food product your cat enjoys) to make his meal more palatable and encourage him to eat.

Remember that treats such as canned tuna or other products you add should only make up between 5 to 10 percent of your cat's daily caloric intake. The rest should come from high- quality cat food. Cats are naturally sporadic eaters, so you may not see him eat a large amount of food all at once. Because liver problems can occur in cats who do not eat, it’s important to monitor your cat's food intake closely throughout the process of teaching him to have his meal without you there. If you become concerned that your cat has not eaten, or if your cat does not appear well, we would recommend a trip to the veterinarian to diagnose or rule out a medical condition.

NYC Pet of the Week: Meet Marge

GIVE PEACE—AND PURRS!—A CHANCE
Even though she is a bit shy, Marge, a 2 1/2-year-old kitty currently at the ASPCA Adoption Center, is very sweet and enjoys socializing. “She likes to be picked up inside her bed, like a taco!” says Kat Miller, ASPCA Senior Behavior Counselor, describing Marge’s peaceful approach to playtime.

Marge came to the ASPCA as a young cat and was quickly adopted. But upon being diagnosed with moderate inflammatory bowel disease, she was soon brought back. Unable to afford Marge’s treatment, her owner wanted the cat to be in a loving home that could.

Marge is now on medication and a low-fat, high-fiber diet, and is available for adoption. The ideal home for her a kitty with her mellow personality and health needs? A quiet household with kids age 10 and up.

Come meet Ms. Tranquility for yourself at our Adoption Center at 424 East 92nd Street, or call the Animal Placement department at (212) 876-7700, ext. 4120. To see some of the other animals at our shelter who are waiting for homes, please visit our Available Animals list.

New Cat Care Article: Cat's Play

Selecting safe toys for your feline

A feral cat may spend half of her day going through the stalk, pounce and kill of the hunting ritual, trying to obtain enough food to sustain her litter and herself. Meanwhile, our domestic felines nosh all day long on a commercially produced, owner-prepared diet. Little wonder Petunia has packed on a few pounds! When we relegate our feline friends to indoors-only status, we rob them of the opportunity to work for their living. It is a far safer existence, but a more mind-numbing, sedentary one. As responsible pet parents, it’s up to us to enrich their environment and enhance their lives.

The good news is that cats are easily amused. There is very little in their environment that could not serve as a cat toy in a pinch. In fact, in many households, commercial cat toys gather dust while items set aside for recycling are co-opted by the cat. Bottle caps, paper shopping bags, dried-out pens, shoe boxes…what may be garbage to you represents a rip-roaring good time to your cat. Are we the only ones who leave empty boxes in the middle of the living room floor to facilitate feline hide-and-seek? Read on...

ASPCA in the News: Kitty Blood Donors Save Plunging Pets

Hospital Reports Cat Blood Shortage Due to Accident-Prone (or Careless) Cats
By SUSAN DONALDSON JAMES, ABC NEWS

Nov. 29, 2006 — Every year, in a phenomenon known as 'high-rise syndrome,' scores of urban cats--going for a pigeon or a leaf--jump to their deaths. The lucky ones, who suffer only broken bones and internal injuries, are rushed to Bergh Memorial Hospital in New York City, where they can often be saved by a unique blood donation program.

Cats may have nine lives, but don't have the same kind of blood as their domesticated counterpart, the dog. Cat blood can only be stored about 30 days, then must be thrown away. Most hospitals rely on blood banks, but few owners have their animals tested for blood type and an incompatible transfusion can cause a hasty demise.

For the last 18 months, Bergh has promoted feline blood donation, unique in New York City, seeking owners willing to turn their tabby into a guinea pig. About 12 enthusiastic pet owners participate. New York may be "stuffed with cats," said Murray, but only one-third of all cats qualify to donate, and the blood shortage is real.

All That's Litter Isn't Gold...

What to choose when cat litter is on your shopping list

Your new cat is coming home from the animal shelter tomorrow. Busily you shop, checking off the items on your list, including cat food, toys, a scratching post and myriad other goodies.

And at the very top of the list are litterbox necessities. You head to the nearest pet supply superstore, and are faced with row after row of “all things litter.” Pastel-colored clumping litter, good old clay litter, some that’s made from pine and some that’s made from newspaper…What to choose, what to choose? Whether you are an experienced owner or a novice, the multitude of choices could prove daunting. But this was not always the case.

More Meow Than Ever!: Cat Vocalizations

As independent hunters, cats have little need for an extensive vocal repertory. Cat-to-cat vocalizations are generally limited to communicating with one's kittens, one's sexual partners and one's potential enemies. There is also an array of vocalizations used by our furry friends when they attempt to communicate with us.

By changing volume, intensity and number of repetitions of the vocalizations and backing them up with expressive body language and olfactory signaling, cats ensure their messages are received and that their needs are met.

NYC Pet of the Week: Meet Ritz Carlton, World's Most Handsome Cat

Looking for the ultimate people cat who’ll greet any and all visitors to your home? We present Ritz Carlton, our resident feline host with the most. The UPS man’s at the door? He’s all over him. Your friendly neighbor? He’ll demand a hearty top-of-the-head scratch. And you, his number-one fan? You’re perfect for leaning up against during grooming sessions and for cuddling with on chilly fall nights.

Like his namesake, this four-year-old flamepoint Siamese mix is majorly accommodating.

“Ritz is very energetic, social and charismatic,” says Dr. Kat Miller of the ASPCA Behavior department. This loving, gentle boy maintains his Hollywood heartthrob looks with lots of exercise, including running, jumping, and fetching. (Get your pitch and arc just right and he’ll leap to snag it mid-air with a Derek Jeter flourish.)

Of course, Ritz’ll need a lot of space for his big personality, and an adopter who’ll spend ample time playing with him. Potential pet parents will need to know that, although Ritz adores people and well-behaved dogs, he’s not a fan of other felines, and must live in a single-cat household.

Can you handle such an unbelievable amount of feline charisma? Of course you can! Please call the Animal Placement department at (212) 876-7700, ext. 4120, and come on down to meet Ritz.

This Week's Success Story: Meet Luckas

WHEN A BLACK CAT CROSSES YOUR PATH…

When Zelda Gerkin was ready to adopt a cat, she and her son headed to their local shelter with a common goal in mind—a black cat. “My hubby has always wanted a black cat,” says Zelda. “But usually when we go to shelters, we never see them.”

On this particular day, however, Zelda remembers, “There were tons!” She told her son to look around and choose one for his dad. “We looked and looked for a long time, and finally we saw a photo on the wall of another cat available for adoption. My son said, ‘Mom, this is the one!’” Zelda was especially glad that the cat was an adult. “I figured, why not give a home to an older animal?”

NYC Pet of the Week: Meet Harley and Big Ben

GOOD HOMES NEEDED, ON THE DOUBLE

Abbott and Costello, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Thelma and Louise, Butch and Sundance…Harley and Big Ben?

Yup, you heard it here first—Harley and Big Ben! “They’re a natural pair,” says the ASPCA’s Barbara McDonald of the two tabby boys currently waiting for adoption at the ASPCA’s 92nd Street headquarters. Although they didn’t come in together, the cats quickly became best friends.

“We were a bit worried about them at first,” says McDonald, who is in charge of Feline Enrichment at the “A.” “But once they paired up, it’s remarkable how much they’ve both come out of their shells.” And together, they’re loving, bonded, sweet and affectionate to people—times two!

If you’re looking to adopt two cats, you certainly won’t have to worry about these guys getting along with each other—or with you. As ASPCA Cares’ David Benson explains, “We all need somebody to lean on, and these two bring out the best in each other. Come on down and meet this dynamic duo. You won’t be sorry!”

To find out more about Harley and Big Ben, please call the Animal Placement department at (212) 876-7700, ext. 4120. To see some of the other animals at our shelter who are waiting for homes, please visit ASPCA.org.

Summer Safety Tips for Pet Owners

In summertime, the living isn’t always easy for our animal friends. Dogs and cats can suffer from the same problems that humans do, such as overheating, dehydration and even sunburn. By taking some simple precautions, you can celebrate the season and keep your pets happy and healthy.

- Never leave your pet alone in a vehicle—hyperthermia can be fatal. Even with the windows open, a parked automobile can quickly become a furnace in no time. Parking in the shade offers little protection, as the sun shifts during the day.

- Street smarts: When the temperature is very high, don’t leave your dog standing on hot asphalt. His or her body can heat up quickly, and sensitive paw pads can burn. Keep walks during these times to a minimum.

- Please make sure that there are no open, unscreened windows or doors in your home through which animals can fall or jump.

Adopt Bambi from Meow Mix House!

You've seen her on Meow Mix House, the first-ever cat reality show in which ten kitties from U.S. shelters live together in a specially designed house in New York City as they vie for the title of Feline Vice President of Research and Development. Although you can catch the project on three-minute segments on Animal Planet now through August 18, the cats' time together is coming to a close—and Bambi, our ASPCA shelter cat, is looking for some new digs.

The four-year-old brown tabby girl hails from the Big Apple and, like many New Yorkers, she's inquisitive, social and quite independent. Bambi loves to be around her people and other cats, and would be an excellent addition to any cat-loving household. True, she's a star, but this girl's no diva—we promise she checked her ego at the Meow Mix House door!

To learn more about adopting Bambi, please contact the ASPCA Animal Placement department at (212) 876-7700, ext. 4120.

New York City Pet of the Week: Meet Baxter

FIRST CHOICE FOR A SECOND CAT

“Baxter’s sweet little face has seen a lot in his first year of life,” says ASPCA Animal Placement’s Cherylyn Washington.

After his owner died in his apartment, Baxter went to live with his owner’s sister. When she became homeless and unable to care for him, Baxter was brought to the ASPCA’s 92nd Street headquarters. Strongly bonded to his owner, the handsome boy was very shy with us at first. “But thanks to the great work of our volunteers and staff,” says Washington, “Baxter’s made great progress—and our animal behaviorists believe he’ll bond again with someone in the right home.”

New Cat Care Article: High-Rise Syndrome

When summer comes around, many pet parents are eagerly opening their windows to enjoy the weather. Unfortunately, they are also unknowingly putting their pets at risk. Unscreened windows pose a real danger to cats, who fall out of them so often that the veterinary profession has a name for the complaint—High-Rise Syndrome. During the warmer months, veterinarians at the ASPCA’s Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital see approximately three to five cases a week. Falls can result in shattered jaws, punctured lungs, broken limbs and pelvises—and even death.

New Cat Videos: Meet Pebbles and Princess

Pebbles is a 3-1/2 year old male cat -- handsome with his gray body and white markings. Pebbles can occasionally be a little feisty, but he loves people. He is looking for an adopter who has had cats before and can read feline body language. Pebbles would do best in a household with kids 13 years and up. To learn how to adopt Pebbles, visit www.aspca.org/animals.

Princess is a gorgeous long-haired black and white cat. This eight year old cat is a very loving girl and very much enjoys petting and stroking. Ear scratches are of course also most welcome. She enjoys playing with dangling toys, especially cat dancers and toy mice. Princess is a little tired of being passed by because of her age, since she knows she is hardly even middle aged yet and has many affectionate years ahead of her. To learn how to adopt Princess, visit www.aspca.org/animals.

New Cat Care Article: Hyperthyroidism

What is hyperthyroidism?
Hyperthyroidism is the most common glandular disorder in cats. It is most frequently caused by an excessive concentration of circulating thyroxine—a thyroid hormone better known as T4—in the bloodstream.

What are the symptoms of hyperthyroidism?
Weight loss and increased appetite are among the most common clinical signs of this condition. Weight loss is seen in 95 to 98 percent of hyperthyroid cats, and a hearty appetite in 67 to 81 percent. Excessive thirst, increased urination, hyperactivity, unkempt appearance, panting, diarrhea and increased shedding have also been reported. Vomiting is seen in about 50 percent of affected cats. Clinical signs are a result of the effect of increased T4 levels on various organ systems.

THE OLD SOFT SHOE

“All I knew is that I wanted an adult cat,” remembers Kirsten Votaw about the trip she made to her local Las Vegas, NV, shelter about ten years ago.

While visiting the adoptable felines that March day, Kirsten noticed that a playful kitten had knocked down the information tag on another cat’s cage. When she went to put the tag back in its holder, she was greeted by the cage’s occupant—a black, gray and white cat who sat very quietly as he looked at her from below. “There was just something unique about his quiet personality that made me know he was the right cat,” says Kirsten. “The adoption worker told me that he was slated to be put to sleep the very next day, too.”

Cat History 101

The Origins of the Cat
The origins of our canine companions are often debated among academics and dog lovers alike. But although there is still much to know about how the first dogs came to be, the introduction of cats into the human world seems better established. Cats became part of our lives 7,000 to 8,000 years ago, after people had already begun to live in permanent communities. Apparently attracted to rodents who came to feed on stored grain, the ancestor of today’s cat, the African wildcat, became a frequent and welcome visitor. The cat, as we know her, played an important part in Egyptian culture and lore. It was also at this time that felines and humans began a curious relationship that has proven to be both good and bad for the cat.

Ask the Behaviorists: Are Two Cats Better than One?

Are two cats better than one--or does it spell double trouble?

Ah yes, there are many benefits to having two cats, but they apply only when the two cats are well matched and have enough physical space to live together comfortably. For one, two cats provide each other with exercise, social interaction, and mental stimulation. Cats housed together have more opportunity to “just be cats” by socializing and playing with each other, and this means they are less likely to be destructive or engage in other problematic behaviors. For example, some single cats annoy their owners by trying to wake them during the night for play. Two cats might still wake the owner by tearing around the home, but at least the owner isn’t getting up out of bed to entertain the cat. Another benefit of having two cats is that they are sometimes cleaner than “single” cats. Cats will groom each other’s ears and coats, often getting at places they can’t reach on their own!

ROADSIDE ATTRACTION

Linda Davis was on her way to a physical therapy session one afternoon five years ago when she saw what looked like “a little bit of fluff rolling back and forth” in the busy street ahead of her. “For some reason,” recalls Linda, “I stopped in the turning lane and got out of the car.” After waving for an oncoming car to stop, she picked up the “little fluff” and brought it to safety. It turned out to be a tiny kitten, weighing just about a pound.

Illinois Residents: Help Feral Cats!

HR 1235, in the House Rules Committee, recognizes October 16 as National Feral Cat Day

The ASPCA supports the principle of managed colonies for feral cat population control until the colony size can be reduced by attrition. Managed feral colonies should include trapping, vaccination, neutering/spaying, and permanent identification including microchipping and ear “tipping” (surgical removal of the tip of one ear as a visible sign that the cat has been sterilized and belongs to a managed colony).

Please click here to send a letter to your representative asking them to support HR 1235.
