ASPCA Pet of the Week: Put on a Happy Face

Is that a winning smile or what? We bet that Opel is probably thinking about meeting a special family that's ready to make a lifetime commitment. A one-year-old shepherd mix, Opel was returned to the ASPCA because her owner moved and could not take her along.

Our behavior staff dubbed Opel as Life of the Party. That means she’s loads of fun, with brains to match! “She’s very eager to learn for a taste of her favorite treat!” said her former owner. “She knows her basic commands, like ‘down’ and ‘sit,’ and she has no behavior issues.” Opel loves to play with other dogs and get lots of exercise while on the town.

We’re thrilled to report that, as we went to press, Opel found a great new home. You go, Opel! But there are other great dogs just like her waiting for you at the ASPCA Adoption Center online.

ASPCA Pet of the Week: This Spud’s for You!

Speed is the name of the game for Spud! With the world as his playground, this one-year-old pit bull is content to have relay races all day long—with himself. Then watch him stop, sit and gaze at you calmly, as if to say, “What?”

He may be a Go Getter, but there’s more to Spud than an endless supply of energy. “He’s a very smart guy and has done a great job learning his obedience commands,” gushes Victoria Wells, ASPCA Manager of Shelter Behavior. You can also add “winner” to Spud’s list of redeeming qualities. “He won a ribbon in the Halloween costume contest at the park,” laughs Victoria. “He was dressed as raw sewage!” We’re so proud.

So the Biden family bought a puppy from a kennel that had lots of, shall we say, issues. After we and so many others lovingly nagged Obama to adopt, too. To honor the bond between people and their pets—and those furry fashionistas who know how to rock a good costume—we put out a call this October for photos of your dogs decked out in their finest apparel. The task of selecting the best of the best-dressed went to guest judge Frances R. Finding the Right Breed for the First Family

“Hypoallergenic” is the latest buzz word concerning Mr.Obama and his quest for the First Family’s dog. His daughter, Malia, has allergies, and so he’ll need to find the right breed for her. Fear not, Mr. Future President! We’re here to help.

There is no such thing as a truly non-allergenic or hypoallergenic dog. Dogs (and cats) produce allergenic proteins that can be found in their dander and saliva, regardless of their breed or the length and color of their hair, or lack thereof. Some may produce more—or less—allergens than others simply because of their individual nature.

But we don’t mean to rain on anyone’s parade. If you’re looking to adopt a dog and have an allergic family member like our President elect does, there is a lengthy list of dog breeds who qualify for the job as First Dog. These include, but are not limited to,

• Basenjis
• Bichons
• Chinese Cresteds
• Greyhounds
• Irish Water Spaniels
• Lhasa Apsos
• Malteses
• Poodles
• Portuguese Water Dogs
• Samoyeds
• Schnauzers
• Terriers such as Airedale, Bedlington, Cairn, Dandie Dinmont, Fox, Kerry Blue, Scottish, Wheaton, West Highland and Yorkshire

For some folks, a mix of the above breeds may also prove to be "hypoallergenic," so shelters are a very good source. But even if you prefer a purebred, you can still make adoption your first option. An estimated 25 to 30 percent of shelter dogs are purebred.

We hope we have helped to prevent any unfortunate, unnecessary sneezing in the White House and other households throughout the nation. Thus doing our part as good American citizens.

ASPCA Pet of the Week: Playing for Keeps

If ever there was a pit bull on a mission to prove the world wrong about the breed’s bad rap, it’s Ava. Our six-year-old sweetie thinks life is one big love fest—and everyone’s invited to the party!

“Ava is a favorite of the staff and volunteers,” boasts ASPCA Manager of Shelter Behavior and Training Victoria Wells. Ava is deaf, but Wells insists that dogs who can’t hear are just as easy to train as ones who can. “As long as you have treats, that’s all that matters!” And because of her deafness, the rest of Ava’s senses are heightened, especially her seventh sense—you know, the sense of play.

Ava’s got plenty of energy, and is happy to burn it all with her human buddies. Just give her a simple rub and she’ll roll over in ecstasy! November 4: What’s in it for the Four-Leggeds?

So how did the animals fare on Election Day? Pretty darn well, and on both coasts, too! You dudes and dudettes in California passed Proposition 2, the Standards for Confining Farm Animals Act! And the masses in Massachusetts passed a ban on dog racing!

One particular pooch is going be barking with pride as new “First Dog” in the White House. President Elect Obama, along with his family, will consider making pet adoption his first option! Speaking of super cool head honchos, our very own Ed Sayres, ASPCA President & CEO, is delighted about the PR Obama is giving pups, and encourages the First Family to “head to their local animal shelter or rescue group, where there are many extraordinary animals just waiting for a forever home.” Who, oh who, will the lucky canine be? Big props to the new prez’s daughters, Malia and Sasha, who have dad wrapped around their fingers. Way to get a dog from dad, girls!



One of our dogs, Suka, wouldn’t mind a seat in the White House. Of course, she’d be gunning for the Oval Office throne. Doesn’t she look positively stately?

ASPCA Rescues 33 Poodles from Queens Hoarders

On October 23, the ASPCA took custody of 33 miniature poodles who belonged to an elderly couple in Queens, New York. Acknowledging that they are no longer able to adequately care for the dogs, themselves and their home, the couple willingly relinquished all but one of their dogs to the ASPCA so they could receive the individual attention and veterinary care they deserve. The dog they chose to keep will be spayed.

The ASPCA was alerted to the hoarding situation by a case worker from a social services agency who was concerned about the number and condition of animals in the home. She did not know who to call or how to help the animals until she read about animal hoarding on the ASPCA’s website, at which point she contacted the ASPCA and asked for a site assessment to be conducted.

“We were fortunate to be able to accommodate such an influx,” says Gail Buchwald, Senior Vice President, ASPCA Adoption Center & Mobile Spay/Neuter Clinics. “The longer an agency waits to act, the more animals there will be and the worse their condition. Getting them to a shelter as soon as possible gives them the best chance for placement in new homes. In this case, the ASPCA was able to stop the population from exploding further.”

The 33 surrendered poodles, who range in age from two months to six years, had never been walked outside and are not well-socialized to strangers and new environments. While they are all timid and fearful, the majority of the dogs are in relatively good health. After being evaluated, spayed/neutered, microchipped and groomed, most of the puppies and healthy adults were placed in loving new homes this week. You wonderful people flooded in to adopt the poodles! Those still available for adoption are “special needs” dogs who must be placed in quiet homes with parents who are willing to work with their ongoing medical and behavioral requirements.

ASPCA Pet Of the Week: Dancing Tiger, Cuddling Dragon!

Don’t let Tiger’s name fool you—the most ferocious nickname we can come up with for him is “cuddle monster.” If he backs you into a corner, it’s because he wants you to hug him! If his face draws close to yours, be prepared for a good licking and thorough sniffing!

This six-year-old pit bull was a victim of neglect when rescued by ASPCA Humane Law Enforcement agents back in January. Now? He’s been dubbed Life of the Party! If you don’t believe us, just watch him do his circle dance.

Tiger definitely needs his energy channeled on a daily basis, according to Trish McMillan, ASPCA Director, Animal Behavior. “He is a great running partner and has good leash manners. He needs a bit of running exercise every day, and once he’s good and pooped, he loves a good snuggle!”

Rescued by the ASPCA Humane Law Enforcement in April 2008, Flora is an adrenaline-packed action star who loves other dogs and aerobic activities. Here she reflects on maintaining a youthful glow, her native gait and the problem with cats.


ASPCA: Hey, Flora! Great to see you!

Flora: Likewise, love.

ASPCA: So how’s your day been? On the sunny side, I hope.

Flora: Always! I played with my roommate for two hours! Her name’s Ruby, and she’s all puppy fun…keeps me young.

ASPCA: You’re not exactly over the hill, Flo.

Flora: Yeah, but I’m no baby, baby.

ASPCA: Right, and that’s a good thing…

Flora: Uh huh, even though I seem like a wild child, I know my basic manners and do what I’m told.

ASPCA: How Victorian of you!

Flora: There’s nothing wrong with a little old-fashioned girliness.

ASPCA: True that, Floralicious. So tell me, what are you looking for—a Prince Charming?

Flora: Well, he doesn’t have to be a prince! But someone with a lot of pooch experience would be nice…just so I don’t have to take the reins, if you know what I mean.

ASPCA: Er, sort of…

Flora: Let’s not mince words—I’m a big girl, strong and solid. The timid don’t stand a chance!

ASPCA: What’s your walking style, hurried, native New Yorker or ambling, tourist New Yorker?

Flora: Oh, native all the way! I like to walk quickly and need a human who knows how to keep up and leave the slow pokes in the dust.

ASPCA: What about inside? Who do you want to share your space with?

Flora: I love other dogs, obviously, but kids are something else.

ASPCA: What about teenagers?

Flora: Sure, they’re okay—I’m a teenager in human years, after all—but probably no younger. And no cats, ugh! They poop inside, for goodness sake.

ASPCA: Well, you’re a wee picky, Flora, but that’s what we love about you.

Flora: Hey, nothing but high standards here!

ASPCA: Wow, you’re a bouncy ball of fun!

Spud: Ya hoooooo!!

ASPCA: So I hear you’ve seen some things in your short life. But I also hear the best hearts have been broken…
He blushes, then spins around in a circle.

ASPCA: And given great talent! Where d’ya get those moves?

Spud: JustsomethingIlearnedonthestreet! How ‘bout this one?!
He jumps straight up in the air three times in a row.

ASPCA: Spud, you’re such a card! Let’s get serious for a second.

Spud: Wait, I have to run a few more laps. Zoooooom!!
He circles his kennel for two minutes, then stops abruptly.

ASPCA: Okay, are you ready?

Spud: Yes! (He pants.) Yes! (He pants.) Yes! (He pants.) Business, bring it…

ASPCA: So what are you looking for in a pet parent?

Spud: Someone who likes to get out and move, of course! Action is the way to my heart, but I also like to be coddled.

ASPCA: Do you love everyone you meet?

Spud: Yeah! People rock, but so do dogs. I LOVE to play with other dogs!!

ASPCA: What about cats?
He blushes again.

Spud: I really do try to behave around cats, but I can’t! They’re my weakness. They’re just so fuzzy and cute.

ASPCA: So you’re not looking for a cat sibling—what about children?

Spud: I’ve been neutered, so no pups for me in the future…

ASPCA: Sorry that was insensitive. What I meant to say was, do you like human children?

Spud: Hmm, since I’m a roughhouser, I’m best with kids ages 12 and up.

ASPCA: You’re very self-aware, Spud. I like that about you.

Spud: Shucks, youth ain’t wasted on me!

ASPCA Pet Of The Week: It’s a Bird? It’s a Plane? No, It’s…Lois Lane!

That’s right, this time it’s the lady who’s got the energy, strength and smarts to be a superhero. This two-year-old pit bull lives in the corner kennel at the ASPCA Adoption Center, complete with a giant window (and a view that would make most New Yorkers jealous), just in case a citizen in distress needs to be rescued. Or at least that’s what we think our Lois Lane likes to daydream about, anyway!

This Go-Getter is a pooch who’s got what it takes. “She is super intelligent and already knows many obedience commands such as sit, down and stay. Lois Lane would love to be with a superman (or woman) who is athletic, energetic and ready to leap tall fire hydrants in a single bound,” says ASPCA Manager of Shelter Behavior and Training Victoria Wells.

When it comes to executing amazing physical feats, Lois Lane loves to roll over for belly rubs. She would be best matched for a home with children 12 years and up. ASPCA: Woah, it’s Speedy McSpeederson back there! How does it move so fast?

Suka: Butt blasters, honey! I do ‘em every day. A girl’s gotta keep on top of her figure or she’ll never meet the two-legged of her dreams.

ASPCA: True that, Suka, but you have much to recommend you, not just a cute rear.

Suka: Well, I do crack a good joke every now and then, but this ain’t the best venue, ahem.

ASPCA: Well, let’s find you the right crowd. What’s your idea of the perfect pet parent?

Suka: Oh girlfriend, where do I start? Tall, dark and handsome? No, seriously, just someone who sees the bright side of things, laughs at all my jokes and likes to horse around.

ASPCA: And what are you offering in return?

Suka: Hon, look at me. I’m a bundle of cuteness, and I shake to please.

ASPCA: Point taken…Got a favorite toy

Suka: The Kong is pretty fun, but sometimes I get a little too jazzed by it.

Suka: I like to chew it up and shake it all around. I’m better off with toys that can stand my party jaws.

Suka: Nah, sugar, it’s all fun.

Suka: I have no idea what a cat is, but kids older than six are pretty neat. Dogs aren’t my specialty, but I wouldn’t mind getting to know some.

Rescued by ASPCA Humane Law Enforcement in early 2008, Tiger is a tough tomato who’s seen a lot, but he’s still a softie on the inside. One of the shelter’s elder statesmen, he never slows down in his quest to find the perfect forever family. Here he reflects on noisy neighbors, the joys of jogging and coming to terms with his checkered past.

ASPCA: Mornin’ Tiger. What’s up?

Tiger: Not much! Just got back from a long jog, and now I’m ready to start the day!

ASPCA: You’re so fit and fab.

Tiger: Thanks, I like to keep it lively. But I really need to find a new running partner to keep me motivated.

ASPCA: Yeah, I feel you. Hopefully this interview will catch some hot marathoner’s eye. So, tell me a little bit about yourself.

Tiger: Well, I’ve had a tough time, as you know. My previous guardian wasn’t the most attentive, shall we say. But the past is the past, and I’m ready to move forward.

ASPCA: And meet someone new?

Tiger: Yes! Someone who’s active and smart. Someone who likes to move and, you know, help me to get rid of all that nervous energy.

ASPCA: But what about cuddling?

Tiger: Of course! That too…after we exercise!

ASPCA: And what of other dogs? Like ‘em or loathe ‘em?

Tiger: You know, it really depends. Some of my neighbors here at the shelter are a little too chatty, no offense. Generally I prefer to play with humans.

ASPCA: Yeah, humans are alright, and they give you belly rubs and treats...

Tiger: Totally! And take me for walks.

ASPCA: So are you a city slicker or a country boy?

Tiger: City, country, by land or by sea—if you have a good heart and fast feet, I’ll be happy.

ASPCA Presents Cat Vs. Dog ‘08

There’s no hiding—election talk is on the tongues around the nation, even the wagging tongues of our furry friends! So if you can’t beat ‘em…join ‘em! We’re holding our very own election for a four-legged President. (Hey, this is supposed to be the year of change, right?) Fun as our election is, it does have a purpose. “The goal of the nationwide online campaign is to incite one million Americans to sign a pledge to prevent cruelty and abuse,” said ASPCA President & CEO Ed Sayres. “By signing the pledge and casting their vote, people are helping the ASPCA ensure animals have a voice in the upcoming election.” When the election is over, we’ll deliver one million signatures to the newest resident of the White House. We hope our efforts will influence lawmakers to put animal welfare on the agenda.” Psst, we're up to nearly 400,000 signatures. Almost halfway there!

Does Your Pooch Have What It Takes To Be A Therapy Dog?

If your dog has a knack for brightening someone’s day, it may be time to harvest his natural charm and skills and train him to be a therapy dog! Maybe you’ve heard of dogs bringing cheer to kids and hospitals and think your dog might be good at that, but you don’t know how to go about making it happen.

Starting this Saturday, September 27^th, the ASPCA, along with licensed Delta Society instructors, will hold a series of classes to help prepare interested pet parents and their pooches for a formal evaluation to become Delta Society Pet Partners.

The classes, held by the ASPCA in conjunction with the Delta Society, provide training for human/animal teams in Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT) and Animal Assisted Activities (AAA). Following certification, these teams dispense love, hope and cheer in major New York City medical and mental health facilities as well as schools.

Pet of the Week: “Ears” Looking at You!

Nutella, lend us your ears! We really, really, really want to squish ‘em and pet ‘em and play with ‘em because they’re just so darn cute! We're tempted to let this photo speak for itself—but there are so many reasons to adopt this five-year-old honey, let us count the ways.

Our gorgeous Goofball is “the most affectionate dog you’ll ever meet,” says Trish McMillan, MSc, CPDT, ASPCA Director, Animal Behavior. “She loves snuggling, and adores playing with toys. You don't even have to throw them—she'll toss them around, shake them and play all on her own! Nutella gets along well with other dogs and would love a home where she can have a good walk every day and a warm bed to snuggle in. I bet she'll want to sleep under the covers with you!”

ASPCA Success Story of the Week: Shakin’ It

Back in March, while in search of a companion for her dog Sadie, Lucy Arnold visited Pet Helpers Rescue and Adoption Shelter in Charleston, SC. “I saw a frail Lab mix sitting in the corner of his kennel,” remembers Lucy. “The tip of his tail was raw and bleeding and I could have counted every rib on his body.” The pup, named Mr. Wiggles, had been abandoned in the bathroom of a house that had allegedly been foreclosed on. He weighed only seven pounds when rescued and, due to anxiety, had started chewing on his tail.

“I sat down slowly in his kennel,” Lucy tells us, “and he rested his head on my knee. I knew at that moment that I wanted to nurture Mr. Wiggles back to health, and I knew Sadie, my gentle 93-pound giant, would be great with him.”

On his first day at home, it became apparent how frightened Mr. Wiggles was. “He would go into a corner and put his face against the wall or hide under the bed,” recalls Lucy. “Sadie would carry her favorite ball to the bed and wait patiently for him to peek his head out.” Slowly Mr. Wiggles began to interact with her. Meanwhile, Lucy fed the malnourished pup small meals to get his system used to food and daily cleaned and bandaged the wound on his tail.

Just six months later, Mr. Wiggles weighs 36 pounds and, donning a gorgeous, healthy coat, loves to run and play with Sadie and other friends from the dog park. “His favorite game is chase,” Lucy reports. “He’s usually out front, leading the pack with a smile on his face and his tail wagging—really, his tail never stops wagging!”

"Although I didn’t name him, I can see how he got his name,” his mom muses with a smile. “When I come home from work or when he’s playing, his whole body shakes, he gets so excited!”

ASPCA Success Story of the Week: Heavenly Creature

Eight years ago, Rebecca Simstein of Winston-Salem, NC, found a dehydrated, exhausted puppy abandoned by the side of a rural road. “When we put her in the back seat of our car, she immediately curled up and went to sleep,” Rebecca recalls.

The three-month-old, whom Rebecca named Star for the white star on her chest, wasn’t able to immediately connect with her new family. “It definitely took her awhile to blossom,” Rebecca remembers. “She wasn't afraid, exactly, but she was distant.” After only a few weeks, however, Star showed her family just how “down to earth” she really is.

At a healthy 75 pounds, Star races around her yard, enjoys pulling the stuffing out of toys in 30 seconds flat and, despite her celestial name, has a great relationship with terra firma. “She loves to sit in the front yard for hours at a time and survey her land,” says Rebecca. “There's a wonderful view of the forest and mountains here.”

This moony lovebug has also discovered her favorite earthly delights, and isn’t above playing a good trick to get them. “She loves bagels and peanut butter,” Rebecca tells us. “She’ll look at me and bark a little, as if she needs to go outside, but when I stand up, she leads me into the kitchen instead of to the front door. She’s training me quite well!"

According to her mom, Star always stays active, even in the orbit of her dreams. “At night she sleeps on the bed with her head on the pillow and wags her tail in her sleep,” says Rebecca. Apparently, all is well in the heavens and on earth!

Tommy the ASPCA Beagle Goes Home!

ASPCA, New York City: Sue McBride of Clio, MI, embraces her new boy, Tommy, an 11-year-old beagle, at the ASPCA Adoption Center. McBride—who lost her beloved beagle Clarence in April—saw Tommy on a segment of NBC’s Weekend Today, on which he appeared with Dr. Louise Murray, the ASPCA’s Director of Medicine. Late last month she drove from Michigan to Manhattan to adopt him, much to the delight of ASPCA staff and Tommy, who joins McBride’s two other rescue dogs, Charlie and Annie, in his new home near Flint. Best wishes to Sue and her canine crew!

ASPCA Pet of the Week: King-Size Cuddler

Want a big ol’ lug with a sense of humor? One part cuddly bear, one part stand-up comedian, King is the pooch du jour. A six-year-old Rottie mix, he’s a gentle giant with years of experience under his charmingly saggy belt.

“King is a very affectionate big boy!” says Trish McMillan, ASPCA Director of Animal Behavior. “He greets all of his friends with a happy wag of his stubby tail. He’s incredibly obedient and walks beautifully on a leash.”

Our keeper King prefers to spend the rest of his days with an attentive human or canine—but no kitty—companion, one who doesn’t leave him alone too often. Emergency! ASPCA Vets Save Starving Pooch

Sometimes the big city can be tough on sensitive souls, and Nala, a tan pit bull with a sweet disposition, is no exception. Earlier this year, the two-year-old dog—emaciated and weak from prolonged starvation—was admitted to the ASPCA’s Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital in New York City for severe anemia and digestive distress. Veterinarians immediately performed extensive blood work and reintroduced solid foods to Nala’s diet. But subsequent radiographs revealed something heartbreaking and life-threatening: Nala’s nearly empty stomach was host to two metal buckles—the sizeable end parts of a collar.

“It’s not uncommon for dogs who are severely anemic to seek out sources of iron, like metal objects,” says Dr. Louise Murray, a board-certified specialist in internal medicine and the ASPCA’s Director of Medicine. “Nala was likely driven to eat her own collar in an effort to survive.”

Worried that Nala was too weak for surgery, Murray opted instead for an endoscopy, a less invasive approach to removing the buckles. After Nala was stabilized in the hospital’s intensive care unit, Murray and Dr. Cara Lane performed the hour-long procedure. They passed an endoscope (fiber-optic technology attached to a tiny camera) through the dog’s mouth, down the esophagus and into the GI tract, and visualized the foreign objects on a computer monitor. With the rapt attention of a dozen hospital staffers, Murray used a long, grabbing instrument to retrieve the pieces of metal, one at a time. The vets’ efforts were an unqualified success, and Nala was saved from risky surgery and further complications.

This summer, after a much-needed period of rest and recovery, Nala, whose name means “gift” in Swahili, is now available for adoption at the ASPCA. With a survivor’s spirit, this special lady awaits the unconditional love and affection she richly deserves.

Take Your Dog to Work Day is This Friday, June 20! Are you Ready?!

No, you don’t have to get Peewee a power suit in size pooch—but if you are planning to do up Take Your Dog to Work Day in style this Friday, ASPCA experts have a few recommendations for you:

- Talk to your colleagues and cube-mates before the big day. Are they scared of dogs? Do they have allergies? If so, you may wish to bring in a baby gate and fashion a makeshift playpen to keep Coco away from those who aren’t fond of the furry kind.

- Come prepared! Your doggy daypack should include foods, treats, bowls, a leash, and paper towels and pet-odor remover to clean up any accidents. Bring Fifi’s favorite blanket or bed, and toys to keep her busy.

- Please don’t bring Digger to the office unless he’s recently received a clean bill of health and his vaccinations are up to date. The other doggies and their “bosses” will thank you for it!

Oprah's Puppy Mill Episode Is Airing Again!

When we last posted about The Oprah Winfrey Show puppy mill episode, we got a strong response from you guys. Happily, the show succeeded in reaching the masses. But if you didn't see it, you've got a second shot! This important episode will be shown again tomorrow, Thursday, May 29, 4:00 P.M. EST. Thanks to investigator Lisa Ling, who went undercover into a handful of Pennsylvania puppy mills, the April 4 episode revealed to millions of viewers the horrific abuses that go on in these large-scale breeding facilities.

Foreclosures Can Be Bad News For Pets

Stories of families who have lost their homes and find themselves no longer able to keep their pets continue to pour in from around the United States. In New Haven, CT, where foreclosures have gone up 80 percent in the past year, local animal shelters receive an average of a call per day from someone who wants to surrender a pet. In Michigan, the Anti-Cruelty Society shelter has seen a 30-percent intake increase over the same period. And last week, the City of Los Angeles, CA, issued a press release revealing that LA Animal Service’s intake of pets rose 16 percent in the first four months of 2008.

California—arguably one the of states hit hardest by the subprime mortgage market collapse—is leading the way in the creation of new legislation that attempts to address this issue. The California State Legislature is now considering Assembly Bill 2949, which would allow bank representatives to immediately seek potentially life-saving help for animals abandoned at foreclosed properties. The bill was introduced by Assemblyman Mark DeSaulnier, and is cosponsored by the ASPCA and the California Animal Association.

“The ASPCA urges pet parents faced with foreclosure to bring their pets to a proper animal shelter if unable to place them with friends or family,” says Californian Jill Buckley, ASPCA Senior Director of Legislative Services. “With the increasing numbers of property abandonments, more and more animals are being left behind to fend for themselves. This bill will help these animals obtain the proper care and attention they need.”

Martha Stewart's Empire Is Going to the Dogs

She knows which fork to use for what course at dinner, she makes a mean French onion soup and she also happens to be the brains behind an amazing media empire. But didja know Martha Stewart is also a serious animal lover? In fact, she describes her dogs as “so loyal and such marvelous company” that “I would rather be with them than almost anyone”—so it’s not surprising that Stewart has partnered with Internet retailer FetchDog.com to raise money for the ASPCA.

FetchDog.com recently opened the Martha Stewart Charitable Shop, an online mini-store featuring more than 20 chic, modern pet products—ranging from cupcake-adorned collars to plush beds and vegetarian treats—handpicked by the domestic diva herself. When pet parents shop from Stewart’s page, a percentage of all their purchases from the entire FetchDog site will be donated to the ASPCA.

It's National Dog Bite Prevention Week!

We hate for our beloved doggies to get any negative PR. But the reality is, dogs do bite, and so the best thing we can do is show you how to prevent it from happening. According to a survey conducted by the National Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an estimated 4.7 million people are bitten by dogs annually, with 800,000 individuals—half of them children—requiring medical treatment. To help raise awareness of the issue, a resolution was introduced in Congress that recognizes National Dog Bite Prevention Week, held this year from May 18-24, 2008, and calls on communities to find local solutions to address the problem. In an effort to help parents educate their children about basic safety around dogs, the ASPCA offers the following tips:

• Children should not approach, touch or play with any dog who is sleeping, eating or caring for puppies.


• Children should not pet unfamiliar dogs without first asking permission from the dog’s guardian. If the guardian says it is okay, the child should begin by letting the dog sniff his closed hand.


• If a child sees a dog off-leash, he should tell an adult immediately.


• If a loose dog comes near a child, she should not run or scream. Instead, she should avoid eye contact with the animal and stand very still, "like a tree," until the animal moves away.

Adoption Diaries: I Think I'll Go For a Walk Outside Now...

Elyse's Adoption Diary:

I can officially walk level one (easy) dogs at the ASPCA adoption center now! This weekend I completed my training. Dog Captain Neal Kushner, who generously donates his time on Saturdays to train new volunteers on dog walking, gave us a whopping 3-hour lesson. After giving his table talk, Neal took us out to walk Cookie.

Cookie is a darling 7-year-old pit mix with unusually large ears for her breed! She was a delight to walk with outside--cooperative and inquisitive. All three of us in training took turns walking her...and guess which one of us got the honor of demonstrating her first poop scooping?

I returned to the adoption center yesterday. There seem to be a whole lot of puppies there right now! Speaking of puppies, Bella's bunch are growing beautifully. Here, see for yourself!

Remember how small they were in my last photo?

My 'lil video clip du jour is of Zena. I didn't get to know her well, but I hung with her long enough to fall in love with that amazing tongue of hers! Observe her conversation with a dog mate:



Don't worry, I didn't neglect the cats! (As if!) Of course, I made my usual trip to the "fat cat habitat" and hung with Whitney (guys, why is she still there? Did you NOT see last week's purr video??). Whitney's buddy Missy turned out to be a real mush ball too. Give her a head rub and she's golden.

Over in Habitat 1 is Fresca. She likes to hang out in the window and observe NYC foot traffic, and she apparently also likes to pose for photographs.

Adoption Diaries: Reunited!

Elyse's Adoption Diary

Whitney's back in her habitat! For those who don't recall, Whitney is the fabulous white cat I fell for weeks back. I had to endure a couple weeks without her as I waited for her to recover from her upper respiratory infection. Now, she's back and purrier than ever. I had to take a video so you could hear this loud motor for yourself. Observe:

My favorite part is toward the end, when you see her rest her head on my lap.

I implore you, give her a good home! As much as I'll miss her, I'll be thrilled to see her gone. This 4-year-old white love ball is waiting for the chance to make someone very happy and spoiled. I'd take her myself if my own cats would let me.


Aaaaand this is Tulip. Tulip has been here at the ASPCA for almost 2 years. She was rescued by our Humane Law Enforcement officers, who found her scarily emaciated. They took her back to the ASPCA, and within a week, she regained 48% of her weight! That's half a Tulip! Now, I must admit she has a pretty good life, living in a corner office and getting pampered all day by the corporate folks who work on her floor.

Everybody stopped me to tell me how much they loved Tulip and to please get her adopted (so come on, people, my reputation is at stake). Even though Tulip likes "her" office, Tulip needs a great home, a place she doesn't wonder where everyone went off to on weekends and national holidays. Besides, we want to give other cats a chance to be an office foster.

Hey, I have two more adoptions to report! Gomez, a wonderful and kind cat, and a little funny pooch, Hedley, found homes. Thanks for all the warm comments you've sent about these guys! Keep up the good work! Who knows, you may have helped guide their adopters to them.

Adoption Diaries: Litter Your Life with Love

Elyse's Adoption Diary:

There really ought to be a warning...I was walking down Bark Avenue (at our adoption center), and turned the corner, and boom! There they were--a litter of nursing puppies! Can you say cuteness overload? It was almost too much for my heart to take!

The only thing better than puppies are ones getting their breakfast from mama. This is Bella. Doesn't she look proud?

And this is Chewy (no, not from Star Wars). Chewy's another silly one. The little Yorkie made himself right at home on my lap. Fuzzy, sweet and curious, he's everything that's wonderful about small dogs. As I headed for the door after our cuddle session, he whimpered, "Don't leave me."
Jazzy Joyce has been here since June of 2006. She's a sensitive 10-year-old, and prefers to be petted on her head. Jazzy was treated for an overactive thyroid gland in September. She's still working on growing back her fur, but I don't know, I think she looks pretty cool without it.

I'm pleased two report that two animals I've mentioned here previously have been adopted! Pocahontas, the sweet old cat, and Cola, the sweet old dog! This was a good week for our seniors!

Adoption Diaries: They're the Pits!

Elyse's Adoption Diary:

This is Oreo, 3 months old. He wasn't too interested in the idea of leaving his cage. That is, of course, until I took him out and we played for a few minutes. When I dared return him to his kitty condo, he made quite a scene. He wanted out! As I played with other cats, he jumped all around and kept sticking his nose and paws out of the holes, like you see in the pic, and yelling at me. Poor thing looked so pathetic and desperate that he made me feel guilty...I eventually gave in and let him back out.

And here is Pocahontas (I'm desperately trying to refrain from making any silly puns or references to the legendary Native American princess). Pocahontas loved to pose for me like a statue. See? And when I put her in my lap, I knew she'd have stayed there forever if she had a choice. She definitely wouldn't be there if she were younger (she's 12).

Gomez was incredibly difficult to get a photo of, but for the sweetest reason. I couldn't get far away enough to take a picture because the little love bug shadowed my every step! He wanted some up close and personal rubbing. Finally, I broke out the cat dancer toy -- here he is above, ready to attack.

Now, on to the doggies. I got to witness something really neat -- Special Agent Ruiz (you may recognize him from "Animal Precinct") brought three pit puppies in. He had just rescued them from the Bronx. These guys were so anxious to eat they consumed their food in seconds! Just look at them playing! All together now: awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww.

I thought I'd leave you with a treat: this is 2-month-old Norma, who was intrigued by my camera. If you listen carefully, you can hear her loud purr. She was adopted by the time I left. They go so quickly when they're that little and cute. It's the older ones who really need help, the poor darlings!

Come on, what's cuter than a litter of brand new kittens?

I met these little guys yesterday. They are being fostered in the office of Barbara MacDonald, who is Volunteer Coordinator, Feline Enrichment, at the ASPCA Adoption Center. I don't know how she gets any work done (but she does--she's fabulous!).

After I pried myself away from the kittens, I headed on over to Bark Avenue to play with some doggies. When I walked into Cola's room (which is bigger than my cubicle), Cola greeted me on her hind legs, her ears straight in the air. This funny girl cracked me up--she was more intrigued by my notepad than me, until she realized I give head rubs and my notepad doesn't. When I dared to stop rubbing, she thrust her head into my hands to tell me, "Don't even think about stopping."

Cola is such a sweet girl. The only reason she hasn't been adopted is she's 11, and of course people typically go for the young 'uns. But look at her! How can you resist those giant eyes and that silly underbite! It looks like she has fangs, which is almost scary 'til she starts licking you all over the place like the goofball she is.

Honorable mentions go to Hedley and Eva, two more small dogs who share a room.

Isn't Eva just the silliest little Shih Tzu? And Hedley's got that unbearable "please take me home" face. Ooh, I just want to squish them!

After I had my doggie fix, I went to the cat habitat to visit Whitney, whom I'd been thinking about all week. I was so looking forward to seeing her, but sadly, just as I got there, an animal technician was taking her to the doctor upstairs. I'm keeping my paws crossed for her, and hoping I can see her next week and hear that tremendous purr of hers.

At least I got to play with Harriet. You may recall, I started writing about her last week.

As you can see, she still needs to lose weight, but she's been working very hard on her diet and looks better already! Her coat is really stunning in person. Her colors are quite vibrant and lovely.

Chat About Your Dog's Health With ASPCA Vet -- TODAY!

We've mentioned it a few times, but it's worth repeating: October is Adopt-A-Shelter-Dog Month! Here to kick things off is Dr. Lila Miller, ASPCA Vice President, Veterinary Outreach. Do You Feed Your Dog Chicken Jerky?

If you feed your dog chicken jerkey, you're obviously a loving pet parent who wants to spoil your pooch with yummy treats. But to be on the safe side, you might want to choose another treat for a while.

FDA update from the Center of Veterinary Medicine:

The Food and Drug Administration is cautioning consumers of a potential association between development of illness in dogs and the consumption of chicken jerky products also described as chicken tenders, strips or treats. FDA has received more than 70 complaints involving more than 95 dogs who experienced illness that their owners associated with consumption of chicken jerky products.

To date, FDA has not been able to determine a definitive cause for the reported illnesses. FDA has conducted extensive chemical and microbial testing but has not identified any contaminant. Many of the illnesses reported may be the result of causes other than eating chicken jerky.

'Nuff said...

Who Let The Dogs In?

Canines at Shea Stadium were sporting blue and orange tonight, showin' some signature doggie loyalty to the New York Mets.

The game was a nail-biter as the Metsters tried to obliterate the Phillies' smug mugs and erase all memory of their previous sweep (oh, I cringe, I cringe). I watched the game from my couch at home, hoping they'd show more shots of the cute dogs in the crowd who were happy to sit in the stands, tails wagging, no matter what was going on at the plate. We should look to these furry wise ones to learn the meaning of a true fan.

Four paws up to the Mets and the North Shore Animal League for hosting Dog Night at Shea. Tickets for the poochies were 5 dollars (part of the proceeds went to the shelter). I know that lots of water and space were provided, and the dogs looked comfy as can be from what I saw on TV. I didn't hear anything about how their..er..bathroom needs were accommodated. If you know, fill me in!

By the way, we went into extra innings. For us, that meant additional heart failure and panic attacks. For the dogs, it meant more time to sneak fallen crackerjacks from underneath the seats. If you must know, we lost, and only the four-legged ones in the crowd left the stadium happy.

Two Heroic Surfers Save Drowning Dog

When we found this story in the Muskegon Chronicle, we just had to share it with you! Who doesn’t love the story of a man who saves a drowning dog? And this one does it with a surfboard—check it out:

The waves on Lake Michigan Tuesday afternoon "were about as big as they get," said surfer Matt Smolenski, 25, of Grand Haven. And the rip current along the Grand Haven pier was "really strong."

One of those big waves swept a man's dog off the pier around 2:30 P.M., and it was Smolenski who rode a wave in to save the struggling pet, said off-duty Muskegon Heights police officer Royce Rodgers, who witnessed the rescue. That wave caught the dog owner first and "knocked him off his feet," Rodgers said, then knocked the dog into the water. "The dog was trying to swim, but the waves were very large. It was struggling," he said. "The owner was screaming for the dog."

Smolenski saw the familiar dog owner, then said to his surfing buddy, Joe Riopelle, 24, also of Grand Haven, "Oh man, that guy's dog went in. I'm going to go for it."

"When I got to the dog, it wasn't dog-paddling anymore," Smolenski said. "He was able to grab the dog's collar," added Rodgers. "He put the dog up on his surfboard."

Smolenski got the 30- to 40-pound dog onto his surfboard and he stayed in the water, fighting the strong current to get to shore. "I got pretty tired," he said. "I had a hard time getting in myself." He was joined by Riopelle, who helped both to shore.

Pit Bull Evaluation

With overwhelming public concern in the fate of the dogs seized from Michael Vick’s Surry County, Va., property, we want you to have information on the upcoming evaluations of the dogs, as well as the nature of assistance we are providing to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).

Dr. Stephen Zawistowski, CAAB, executive vice president, National Programs, and science advisor for the ASPCA, will be leading a team of several other certified applied animal behaviorists (trained animal behavior experts who have been certified by the Animal Behavior Society) in conducting behavior evaluations of the pit bulls seized during the course of the investigation.

As part of this process, BAD RAP (Bay Area Doglovers Responsible About Pit Bulls), a San Francisco-based non profit organization that is an educational resource for pit bull owners and the shelters that house them, will be working with the ASPCA-led team to help identify dogs whocan be absorbed into experienced foster programs for further observation and possible re-homing into appropriate homes—one of several possible outcomes for these dogs.

“We greatly appreciate the trust placed in us by the USDA to ensure that these dogs are given every opportunity to have a second chance, and take this phase of the investigation very seriously,” said Ed Sayres, ASPCA president and CEO. “Fighting dogs obviously face a lot of challenges when considered for rehabilitation or placement but we will make sure they get the professional, thorough and detailed evaluations that they deserve.”

Said Donna Reynolds, BAD RAP executive director, “We’ve seen time and time again that by pooling resources, we can get more accomplished for animals. We’re honored to be a part of the ASPCA’s team effort and look forward to giving our best to the dogs. After all they’ve been through, they certainly deserve a fair trial.”

The ASPCA-led evaluation team will conduct several tests on these dogs, including their response to humans and other dogs, as well as their general reactivity and comfort with being handled. No further details on the specifics of these tests can be released at this time.

Once the evaluations are completed, the ASPCA will provide a final report to the USDA, which will contain the team’s collective recommendations to the USDA on the disposition of the dogs. Other than possible re-homing into appropriate foster homes, recommendation options may include rehabilitation as law enforcement dogs, placement in sanctuaries (which will need to meet USDA facility standards), or euthanasia. However, euthanasia is not the only recommendation or option that will be considered, as has been reported in some media accounts—the results of the evaluations will determine what those recommendations are. No dogs will be placed in private homes at this time. All placements will be made with, and through, experienced rescue, foster and sanctuary groups.

The USDA will review the report, and then pass on its recommendations to a federal court. However, much like the sentencing of a defendant, the final disposition of the dogs will be decided by a federal judge. At no time will the ASPCA take possession of the dogs; they will remain property of the federal government until their disposition has been determined by the government.

Good Livin’—Dogs, Big and Small, In the Big Apple

If you have your heart set on a nice, big dog but don’t think you can have one because of your urban living space, we have some good news: you can share your studio with a dog of any size, as long as it’s one of the right breed and temperament.

In a WBAI radio interview, Monday, July 3^, at 8:40 A.M., the ASPCA’s Allison Cardona said, “Some people think, ‘I have a small apartment, so I need a small dog,’ but actually it can be the opposite. Small, loud, barky dogs don’t always make the best apartment dogs because they have so much energy, while a Great Dane might sit around your couch all day and be quiet.”

Here are a few examples of big breeds appropriate for small apartments:

• St. Bernard
• Mastiff
• Great Dane
• Old English Sheepdog

Of course, there are terrific breeds of small dogs who aren’t as “barky,” suitable for apartment living. Examples are:

• Pug
• Chihuahua
• Poodle
• Dachshund

The great thing about adopting from a shelter is that you can find just the right dog to suit your lifestyle. Big or small, these doggies all have lots of love to give. Visit your local shelter or check out the ASPCA’s adoptable animals.

ASPCA Pet Care: 10 Tips For Feeding Your Dog

Adult dogs require sufficient nutrients to meet energy needs and to maintain and repair body tissues. The amount you feed your adult dog should be based on his or her size and energy output. Activity levels vary dramatically between pets, and will play an important role in determining caloric intake.

As a responsible dog owner, one of the most common pitfalls you’ll have to watch out for is overfeeding. Attempts to shower our dogs with love by means of big meals and tons of tasty treats are sweet, but misguided. In dogs, as with humans, extra weight can lead to health problems. Be sure to indulge your four-legged friend with affection, not food—and read our Top 10 Tips For Feeding Your Adult Dog.

ASPCA Pet Nutrition Q & A: Weight Loss in Mother Dogs

Do dogs typically lose a lot of weight after delivering and weaning puppies?
—Kristi

It is not uncommon for mother dogs to lose a significant amount of weight after giving birth, Kristi. However, they should ideally not lose more than 10 percent of their original body weight. Just remember that nursing puppies will continue to put a drain on their mother's body, so be sure to provide your canine mom with a high-quality food. We suggest a product for active dogs or a puppy formula, which are higher in calories.

It is also ideal to keep food and water available for her at all times while she is nursing. After the weaning period, which lasts approximately eight weeks, the mother dog should begin to steadily gain weight. If your dog is not gaining weight, contact your veterinarian to make sure that she is not suffering from any health problems. Sometimes it just takes time, but parasites or other medical factors could play a role in her slow return to a normal weight.

New Video! ASPCA Charm School: Talented Hounds Abound

On Friday, February 2, the ASPCA Charm School Talent Show for Dogs proved just how adoptable and trainable shelter dogs are. The 13 canine contestants showed off their tricks in front of an enthusiastic audience of television crews, photographers and ASPCA staffers.

Our judges, two-time Tony Award winner Bernadette Peters, radio personality Angie Martinez, The Bachelor’s Prince Lorenzo Borghese and ASPCA Humane Law Enforcement agent Annemarie Lucas, gave their rapt attention to the furry contenders. Dogs were judged on overall presentation, attentiveness to the handler and creativity of the tricks performed.

"The remarkable thing is that these are all dogs who have been rescued from neglectful situations, so they've come so far," says the ASPCA’s Allison Cardona.

Press Release: ASPCA Reacts To FDA Approved “Doggy Diet Drug”

Nation’s Oldest Animal Welfare Organization Applauds Advancements in Veterinary Science; Cautions on Importance of Veterinary Supervision

NEW YORK, January 15, 2007—The ASPCA^® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals^®) today applauded the advances in veterinary science that have resulted in the approval of a “diet drug” for dogs (Pfizer, Inc.’s Slentrol) to be approved by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). However, the country’s oldest animal welfare organization reminds pet parents that this should not replace regular diet and exercise programs; and that it is important to work closely with your veterinarian to determine if your pet would be an appropriate candidate for this treatment.

“In the most recent National Academy of Sciences National Research Council report on the nutritional requirements of dogs and cats, pet obesity was highlighted as an issue that needs to be addressed,” said ASPCA President & CEO, Ed Sayres. “This drug certainly does that, and points to the incredible advances in veterinary science that are turning futurism and fiction into fact, but it is too soon to say what the effects and/or side effects of this drug will be with long-term use in large numbers of dogs.

NYC Pet of the Week: Meet Artichoke!

Artichoke, our super-smart, super-sweet seven-month-old Border Collie mix, will play your heart strings as he shows you how quickly he learns and understands, even without being able to hear very well. “He’s a regular maestro of the dog world, and we can’t get enough of him,” says David Benson, ASPCA Cares.

Although we aren’t sure of the extent of his hearing impairment, our ASPCA Behavior staff can show Artichoke’s new family some simple techniques used to train a hearing-impaired dog. Soon, you’ll have him reading hand signals like notes on a page.

While volunteering at shelters, photographer Traer Scott was asked to take photos of the dogs she was working with for records and Internet adoption sites. As her files grew, Scott realized that many of the dogs whose photos she had in her archives never made it out of the shelter alive. “I found that no matter what, I couldn’t bring myself to delete their photos, which were in some cases the only record of their existence,” she says. A few months later, Scott began to create the beautiful, honest portraits that make up Shelter Dogs. The 96-page book features 50 dogs, their souls and spirits revealed through Scott’s images. The author included notes explaining how each dog came to the shelter and what eventually happened to him or her. Our Latest Success Story: Okra

Two weeks after Dawn Payne and her husband got married, the couple went to their local animal shelter in Ft. Walton Beach, FL, to find a dog. Or, to be more precise, to find a small dog.

“I had called ahead,” says Dawn, “so when we got to the shelter, they took us back and showed us all of the small dogs they had.” Dawn took care to stop and visit with all of them but, she says, “None of them really spoke to me.”

ASPCA in the News: Dog Advocates Speak Out Against Breed Banning

Tough laws are needed to protect the public from dangerous dogs, but banning pit bulls or other breeds wholesale isn’t a real solution, an ASPCA lawyer said Wednesday.

Some cities now impose stiff penalties, including jail time, if pet owners let a dangerous dog attack someone, said Ledy VanKavage, an attorney from the St. Louis area. Others push dog owners, pet shops and animal shelters to alter their dogs, a process that could cut down on dog aggression.

But breed bans aren’t fair because they punish animals that haven’t done anything wrong, VanKavage said. “We should be allowed to own any dog we want as long as that dog doesn’t hurt anybody.”

NYC Pet of the Week: Meet Jacob

“Jacob is a very special dog,” says the ASPCA Behavior department’s Trish McMillian of the eight-year-old Lab/mastiff mix currently on the lookout for his forever home. After a rough start in life, the gentle golden oldie is ready for his retirement. “He would love to just curl up on the couch with you,” says McMillian.

But don’t let Jacob’s age and well-developed “cuddle gene” fool you—our elder statesman hasn’t lost and get-up-and-go. “He would be great on long, leisurely walks,” says McMillian.

Sweet, in shape…and smart, too? Yup, Jacob’s got it all. He knows Sit, Stay, Shake, Come and Down and, reports McMillian, “Being as motivated to learn as he is, we’re sure he can learn even more commands.”

This Week's Success Story: Meet Jade

IT WAS JUST MEANT TO BE

This story begins about six years ago, when Kristi Zamzow was a sophomore at Southwest Texas State University. “I was a volunteer at the local animal shelter in San Marcos,” Kristi tells us, “and began spending time with a beautiful yellow Labrador retriever named Jade.” Unable to resist the canine’s adoring eyes and sweet disposition, Kristi promptly fell in love.

And although Kristi couldn’t adopt the dog because she lived in the campus dorms, her parents had 40 acres of land out in the country. She just had to convince her parents…

GOOD DOGS COME TO THOSE WHO WAIT


When Sarah and John Hall first began looking for a dog, they knew exactly what they wanted. “We decided that a cocker spaniel would be a good breed for us,” says Sarah, “and we had actually looked into getting a dog from a breeder.”

But when Sarah started to think about it, she had a definite change of heart—and the family opted to adopt from a shelter. “Even if we didn’t get the exact breed we wanted, we’d much rather save an animal’s life,” she tells us.

Californians: Help Ban Dog Chaining!

SB 1578, the bill to ban dog chaining as the primary means of confinement, has already passed the Senate and is now set for a vote on the Assembly floor, probably within the next week to 10 days.

SB 1578, the Anti-Chaining Bill, would prohibit chaining or tethering a dog to a stationary object as a primary means of confinement. Research has shown that chained dogs are nearly three times as likely to bite as dogs who are not chained.

NYC Pet of the Week: Meet Diamond

Searching for a dog who’ll help you get in touch with your inner diva? Meet Diamond, a golden girl with plenty of sparkle to add to your home.

“This mellow lady is looking for a couch to curl up on and a human friend to cuddle with,” says the ASPCA’s David Benson of the nine-year-old Lhasa Apso. She may be low-maintenance in terms of exercise (no frenzied sessions of fetch or marathon runs necessary for this dainty canine!), but is demanding of something you’ll have to give a lot of—attention and love. “She likes petting,” explains Benson, “and prefers the surroundings of a soft bed to an open field.”

This smart girl knows how to sit and will work for a tasty treat, and would do best as the only dog in the household. Could you be that special someone with whom she can spend her golden years? “If you think you’ve got the stuff to let this Diamond shine, come on down to the ASPCA and meet this terrific lady,” urges Benson.

This week's Success Story: Meet Daphne

“EARS” LOOKING AT YOU!

Jessica Casper and her boyfriend had just purchased a home with a yard. But what they really needed? “A dog, of course!” says Jessica.

“I had been wanting one for a long time,” she says, “so after a few months we checked out our local shelter.” Picking the perfect pooch is no easy task, and the couple couldn’t come to a decision—until one very excited shepherd/greyhound mix made the job a whole lot easier.
“Daphne was very playful when they brought her in, but she did eventually lie down,” says Jessica. “And at one point she just looked at me, and I knew she was the one.”

After quickly settling into her new home, Daphne is now a full-fledged member of the family. She loves her daily runs with Jessica’s boyfriend, and cuddling with her pet parents is also high on her list of fun things to do. But her all-time favorite activity? “Sneaking on our bed in the mornings to sleep with us!”

New Behavior Article: Puppy Socialization

Puppies begin learning at birth, and are particularly responsive to retaining what they learn during their first 13 to 16 weeks of life. It is especially important that puppies have experiences with other dogs, as well as with children and adults, during this optimal time from birth to 16 weeks.

Picture two dogs from the same litter. One brother is taken out as a puppy at least once a week to meet new people and dogs. The other puppy is kept at home. A study conducted by the ASPCA’s Dr. Pamela Reid revealed that the socialized brother is less likely to exhibit problematic behavior as an adult than the puppy who was kept at home.

FLOWER POWER

After she and her boyfriend, Matt, had been dating for about a year, Christina Malmberg decided it was time to welcome a dog into their home. Checking out Petfinder.com one morning, Christina stopped at the first dog she saw—a five-month-old Jack Russell terrier named Daisy. “She was standing on someone’s shoulder and looked so feisty,” laughs Christina, who wasn’t surprised that the pooch was described as “spunky.” She also read that the little pup had had a broken leg and hip. Says Christina, “I fell in love with her in an instant, and made Matt call the shelter right away.”

Brew-Ha-Ha: ASPCA Dogs Guzzle Heartland Brewery’s New Lager Treat for Canines

With the dog days of summer upon New York City, Heartland Brewery in Union Square joined representatives and rescued dogs from the ASPCA on July 25 to introduce pets and their humans to a new summer treat—Slobber Lager.

Made from the finest malted barley, beef stock and water, Slobber Lager is a slightly carbonated, non-alcoholic liquid treat (not a replacement for water) that is safe and yummy for all dogs young and old, large and small. Summer Safety Tips for Pet Owners

In summertime, the living isn’t always easy for our animal friends. Dogs and cats can suffer from the same problems that humans do, such as overheating, dehydration and even sunburn. By taking some simple precautions, you can celebrate the season and keep your pets happy and healthy.

- Never leave your pet alone in a vehicle—hyperthermia can be fatal. Even with the windows open, a parked automobile can quickly become a furnace in no time. Parking in the shade offers little protection, as the sun shifts during the day.

- Street smarts: When the temperature is very high, don’t leave your dog standing on hot asphalt. His or her body can heat up quickly, and sensitive paw pads can burn. Keep walks during these times to a minimum.

- Please make sure that there are no open, unscreened windows or doors in your home through which animals can fall or jump.

Latest Success Story: Wyatt

FAST ACTION HERO!

A few years ago, Kari Cashen was on the lookout for a bluetick coonhound puppy to add to the household’s canine family of two older coonhounds. A search online turned up Wyatt, a six-month-old pup who’d been rescued from the hunter who’d bred him. Explains Kari, “The hunter intended to shoot the pup because he was born with blue eyes, instead of the breed-standard brown eyes.” Blue was perfectly fine with Kari, who was very interested in the little guy.

The only catch? Kari lives near Lake Tahoe, and Wyatt hailed from West Virginia.

Latest Success Story: Dandy

FINE AND DANDY

Ever since she moved out of her parents’ home, Ashlee Jordan wanted to get a dog. “Unfortunately,” she explains, “housebreaking a puppy in a second-floor apartment wasn’t an option.” And when her family’s German shepherd, Jazmyn, suddenly fell ill last October, Ashlee was unable to visit her before she went in for exploratory surgery. “When she didn’t survive, I was devastated.”

A few months later, Ashlee and her boyfriend got a call from his family. They had found a dog—an English setter they guessed to be about five years old—abandoned at a gas station. “She was soaked to the bone in the middle of Michigan’s winter-spring transition,” remembers Ashlee. Her boyfriend’s family already had two large dogs, but the problem was easily resolved when the couple went over to meet the canine.

FROM STRAY DOG TO SUPERDOG

There are people who make all kinds of excuses why they shouldn’t adopt from a shelter, and Janice Biniok admits that she used to be one of them. “I didn’t want to end up with someone else’s problem dog, and I always thought it was best to raise a dog from a pup,” she says. “But when I thought about getting a puppy, I had flashbacks of soiled carpeting, gnawed chair legs and middle-of-the-night whining.”

With that in mind, Janice found herself searching her local shelters for an adult dog.

Fourth of July Safety Tips

For many people, nothing beats lounging in the backyard on the Fourth of July with good friends and family—including the four-legged members of the household. While it may seem like a great idea to reward Rover with scraps from the grill and bring him along to watch fireworks, in reality some festive foods and products can be potentially hazardous to your pets. The ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center offers the following tips:

* Never leave alcoholic drinks unattended where pets can reach them. Alcoholic beverages have the potential to poison pets. If ingested, the animal could become very intoxicated and weak, severely depressed or could go into a coma. Death from respiratory failure is also a possibility in severe cases.

* Do not apply any sunscreen or insect repellent product to your pet that is not labeled specifically for use on animals. Ingestion of sunscreen products can result in drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, excessive thirst and lethargy. The misuse of insect repellent that contains DEET can lead to neurological problems.

New Dog Care Article: Tracheal Collapse

What is tracheal collapse?
Tracheal collapse is a common cause of airway obstruction in dogs. The trachea, or “windpipe,” is a tube made up of sturdy rings of cartilage through which air is transported to and from the lungs. Sometimes, however, the tracheal rings begin to collapse, and as air is squeezed through, a characteristic honking cough results.

Why tracheal collapse occurs is unknown, although a congenital abnormality, in which the cartilage of the tracheal rings is less cellular and therefore weaker than normal, is suspected.

New Dog Care Article: Canine Arthritis

What is canine arthritis?
Osteoarthritis, or degenerative joint disease (DJD), is a progressive, debilitating disorder characterized by a loss of cartilage and the death of cartilage-producing cells. DJD can occur in any joint, but is most often found in the hip. It can lead to permanent loss of function.

What breeds/ages are prone to canine arthritis?
In most cases, DJD occurs secondarily to trauma, nutritional disorders or infections. It is prevalent in middle-aged to geriatric dogs (and sometimes in cats). DJD may also occur in young dogs who suffer from canine hip dysplasia, a common developmental disorder of the hip joint found primarily in the larger breeds and breed mixes.

New Video: Meet Isabella

Isabella was abandoned at a city shelter, and now faces more challenges.

Isabella is a 12-year old gorgeous Shetland Sheepdog mix. She was adopted from the ASPCA back in 1995. We recently discovered that she'd been abandoned at the city shelter. The ASPCA never abandons the animals we adopt out, so we brought Isabella back to us.

Isabella has a small malignant tumor in the back of her throat—fortunately, radiographs did not reveal that the disease has metastisized. As surgery or other treatment is not available, her cancer is likely to recur in as little as 3-6 months.

Isabella needs a special home to help her through her difficult time. We hope that some good soul will give Isabella a loving home for whatever amount of time is left to her.

Our Latest Success Story: Hayden

GOOD SHEPHERD


“I didn’t know if I was ready for any dog, let alone a large dog!” exclaims North Carolina’s Lisa Napier. The family already had a cat and a Chow dog, but Lisa’s four-year-old daughter had just fallen in love with the Benji movies—and, says Lisa, “She was pleading for a small dog who would play with her and sleep in her bed.” The family decided to check out what the local Mecklenburg County shelter had to offer.

“I usually won’t go in,” says Lisa. “Having worked in a shelter before, I know how heartbreaking it can be.” But that day they walked through the kennels, “talking to each sweet face” as they passed. But Lisa, her husband and her daughter found themselves stopped in front of one dog in particular.
