NYC: Get Your Disco On And Help Animals!

Sure, a lot of you readers live outside of the Big Apple. Leave it to furry friends to give you a good excuse to head on over!
What: Young Friends of the ASPCA presents The Shaggy Dog, an event to benefit the animals and mission of the ASPCA. Put on your disco attire and get your groove on for a good cause! DJ Berrie will host a night of dancing while you enjoy cocktails and a silent auction.
Who: The Honorary Chairman is TV food critic and chef Katie Lee Joel (and married to “The Piano Man”).
Where: The IAC Building, 555 W 18th St. (Entrance is on 18th St. between 10th Avenue and the West Side Highway.)
When: Thursday, October 16, 2008, 9:00 P.M. 1:00 A.M.
Why: Your contribution will help rehabilitate abused animals seized by our Humane Law Enforcement department, feed shelter animals and provide microchips for pets so they can be reunited with their humans if they get lost. (And besides, do you really need an excuse to party hardy in disco gear?)

ASPCA Humane Law Enforcement agents recently arrested two New York City men for unrelated incidents of animal neglect. Each man is charged with one count of misdemeanor animal cruelty and faces up to one year in jail and a $2,000 fine.

At least 40 pet lovers and their pool-loving pooches headed out to the Dog Run in New York City for the 2nd annual Leashes and Lovers "Dog Dogs of Summer" pool party, which benefited the ASPCA. Among those on hand to mix, mingle, do the doggy paddle and watch the canine bathing suit contest were Steven Stark and his dog, Bru, shown here.

“Jacob is a very special dog,” says the ASPCA Behavior department’s Trish McMillian of the eight-year-old Lab/mastiff mix currently on the lookout for his forever home. After a rough start in life, the gentle golden oldie is ready for his retirement. “He would love to just curl up on the couch with you,” says McMillian.

Here's a great way to join in the fight against puppy mills, Big Apple animal lovers! Grab your pooch and head out to Riverside Park this Saturday, May 20, for the annual Puppy Mill Awareness Day dog walk. The event, sponsored by our friends at Adopt-A-Pet, Inc. and Last Chance for Animals, will take place from 10:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M., rain or shine. Special guests include Chris DeRose of HBO’s Dealing Dogs and former puppy mill dogs Ajax, Fozzie and Daisy; there’ll also be vendors, a silent auction, and contests for canines to compete in, ranging from “Loudest Bark” to “Best Dressed.” For registration information, please visit
