“Adorable kittens in office cubicle need socializing! These kittens are in need of human attention and exercise outside their cage. The kittens are all very social, but are getting stir crazy, and we do need to ensure that they get consistent human contact to remain friendly to people. We need cat socializers who can spend time with them. I know this is a tough job cuddling with adorable kittens, but someone's got to do it!”

And so I journeyed to the ASPCA Adoption Center to perform the tedious chore of playing with kittens. Amy Geduldig, ASPCA Manager, Media and Communications, joined me:

Here are the players in the kitten collage above. The gray tabbies are Ludwig, Clara and Johannes (methinks someone named them while listening to classical music?); the orange tabby is Colin; The black kits are Colette and Craig, and finally, the proud Mama is Asbury. Mama Asbury was so relieved to have us babysitters show up and give her a break!

And here is another set of kittens in yet another office cubicle. (Amazing how anyone gets any work done!!!) Please forgive my corny narrative:

At 12 days old, a kitten’s ears are not fully developed. Ack, too cute, too cute! I love seeing “0 months” listed as their age. It cracks me up.

I had to give a shout-out to Nutella here. She was our “Pet Of The Week” recently and made quite a splash! I received tons of messages about her, many from folks expressing interest in adopting her. She’s still available, however. Please, New Yorkers, this great dog would make an amazing pet. If you know someone who’s looking, have them meet Nutella. UPDATE 09/30 Hooray—Nutella was adopted!

“Hello, I’m Zeus. Don’t count me out just because I’m a 10-year old pit bull. Everyone here loves me and says I’d be the most wonderful pet you could imagine!”

ASPCA Pet of the Week: Diamond in the Rough

When Vincent first arrived at the ASPCA Adoption Center, we soon realized that it would take him a while to warm up to people. “He came in so scared that he was shaking. He would cringe every time someone tried to touch him,” recalls Katie Watts, ASPCA Feline Behavior Counselor.

As it turned out, Vincent discovered in just a few weeks that he does indeed like those wacky large things called humans! He’s no dummy—“As soon as you start scratching his head (his favorite spot), he just melts and starts purring,” Katie tells us. “This guy really is a diamond in the rough!” He may still be a little shy with new people, but one thing Vincent’s not is camera shy! When he sees a picture-snapping gizmo, he promptly sticks his nose directly in the lens (making it quite difficult to snap a photo).

This striking beaut “needs a nice quiet home with a patient, loving and quiet human companion,” says Katie. He may be picky, but if you win his heart, he’ll be an amazing pet. Does Your Pooch Have What It Takes To Be A Therapy Dog?

If your dog has a knack for brightening someone’s day, it may be time to harvest his natural charm and skills and train him to be a therapy dog! Maybe you’ve heard of dogs bringing cheer to kids and hospitals and think your dog might be good at that, but you don’t know how to go about making it happen.

Starting this Saturday, September 27^th, the ASPCA, along with licensed Delta Society instructors, will hold a series of classes to help prepare interested pet parents and their pooches for a formal evaluation to become Delta Society Pet Partners.

The classes, held by the ASPCA in conjunction with the Delta Society, provide training for human/animal teams in Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT) and Animal Assisted Activities (AAA). Following certification, these teams dispense love, hope and cheer in major New York City medical and mental health facilities as well as schools.

Free Cats at the ASPCA—Get ‘Em While They’re Cute!

Time to give the older guys their due. Spread the word—starting tomorrow, you can adopt a kitty or two for free—if the cat’s at least three years old. It’s all part of our “Free Over Three” campaign. Free…three…whaddya know—that rhymes!

As you know, kittens and very young cats have much better chances of getting adopted. So we’re playing dirty to give our beloved purry ones over three the same chance for a great home.

If you like a little brains with your brawn, meet Tiger, an athletic smarty pants with a need for speed. A six-year-old pit bull mix with hot brindle markings, he lives to learn new things and reap those sweet rewards like treats and belly rubs.

“Tiger is the world's greatest running partner!” says Joel Lopez, Coordinator of the ASPCA’s Mobile Spay/Neuter Clinic. “He loves to explore the world while out jogging, and trots along nicely while taking it all in.”

ASPCA Pets of the Week: It Takes Two!

DominoWant some feline affection, times two? Look no further than Domino and Murphy, best friends and partners for life. Domino is a ten-year-old black-and-white boy on the reserved side; Murphy’s all feminine charm. She’s a sweet seven-year-old with gentle tiger markings and a petting fetish.

“This duo loves to lounge!” says Kalie Dominguez, intern at the ASPCA’s Mobile Spay/Neuter Clinic and the kitties’ foster friend. “Murphy won’t leave your lap, and big boy Domino likes to hang out at your feet and hope for a belly rub. If it comes down to it, they’ll get vocal for attention.”

Dying Puppy Abandoned—Owner Busted!

ASPCA Humane Law Enforcement has caught a 32-year-old man who tried to shirk responsibility by abandoning his sick dog in another borough.

On July 25, ASPCA Special Agent Peter Rivas arrested Bronx resident Russell Hobbs for animal cruelty. He has been charged with one count of misdemeanor animal cruelty, and faces up to one year in jail and a $2,000 fine.

Hobbs allegedly abandoned his sick eight-month-old pit bull puppy, Lucy, on July 3, leaving her tethered outside an apartment building on 91st Street in Manhattan. A concerned passerby brought the dog to the ASPCA’s Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital, where veterinarians discovered that she was critically ill with parvovirus. Despite attempts to save her, Lucy died four days later.

Under New York State law, abandoning an animal is a misdemeanor crime punishable by a year in jail, a $1,000 fine, or both.

Tommy the ASPCA Beagle Goes Home!

ASPCA, New York City: Sue McBride of Clio, MI, embraces her new boy, Tommy, an 11-year-old beagle, at the ASPCA Adoption Center. McBride—who lost her beloved beagle Clarence in April—saw Tommy on a segment of NBC’s Weekend Today, on which he appeared with Dr. Louise Murray, the ASPCA’s Director of Medicine. Late last month she drove from Michigan to Manhattan to adopt him, much to the delight of ASPCA staff and Tommy, who joins McBride’s two other rescue dogs, Charlie and Annie, in his new home near Flint. Best wishes to Sue and her canine crew!

ASPCA Pet of the Week: King-Size Cuddler

Want a big ol’ lug with a sense of humor? One part cuddly bear, one part stand-up comedian, King is the pooch du jour. A six-year-old Rottie mix, he’s a gentle giant with years of experience under his charmingly saggy belt.

“King is a very affectionate big boy!” says Trish McMillan, ASPCA Director of Animal Behavior. “He greets all of his friends with a happy wag of his stubby tail. He’s incredibly obedient and walks beautifully on a leash.”

Our keeper King prefers to spend the rest of his days with an attentive human or canine—but no kitty—companion, one who doesn’t leave him alone too often. Emergency! ASPCA Vets Save Starving Pooch

Sometimes the big city can be tough on sensitive souls, and Nala, a tan pit bull with a sweet disposition, is no exception. Earlier this year, the two-year-old dog—emaciated and weak from prolonged starvation—was admitted to the ASPCA’s Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital in New York City for severe anemia and digestive distress. Veterinarians immediately performed extensive blood work and reintroduced solid foods to Nala’s diet. But subsequent radiographs revealed something heartbreaking and life-threatening: Nala’s nearly empty stomach was host to two metal buckles—the sizeable end parts of a collar.

“It’s not uncommon for dogs who are severely anemic to seek out sources of iron, like metal objects,” says Dr. Louise Murray, a board-certified specialist in internal medicine and the ASPCA’s Director of Medicine. “Nala was likely driven to eat her own collar in an effort to survive.”

Worried that Nala was too weak for surgery, Murray opted instead for an endoscopy, a less invasive approach to removing the buckles. After Nala was stabilized in the hospital’s intensive care unit, Murray and Dr. Cara Lane performed the hour-long procedure. They passed an endoscope (fiber-optic technology attached to a tiny camera) through the dog’s mouth, down the esophagus and into the GI tract, and visualized the foreign objects on a computer monitor. With the rapt attention of a dozen hospital staffers, Murray used a long, grabbing instrument to retrieve the pieces of metal, one at a time. The vets’ efforts were an unqualified success, and Nala was saved from risky surgery and further complications.

This summer, after a much-needed period of rest and recovery, Nala, whose name means “gift” in Swahili, is now available for adoption at the ASPCA. With a survivor’s spirit, this special lady awaits the unconditional love and affection she richly deserves.

Like your boy kitties mellow and mushy? Bogey is a ten-year-old orange butterfly who lives for friendships with his four-legged brothers and sisters. In a human companion, he’s looking for someone with a healthy sense of boundaries and life on the sunny side.

“Bogey absolutely LOVES other animals, including dogs!” says Katie Watts, ASPCA Feline Behavior Counselor. “At first he was very nervous with people, but he really came out of his shell when he was put in a habitat with other cats.”

A true pet-trovert, our beloved Bogey thrives best in social situations and prefers to live in a multi-cat or dog household. Miley Cyrus Kicks Off Event to Raise $$ for the ASPCA!

Central Park, New York City: Teen sensation Miley Cyrus joined hometown hero ASPCA Officer Annemarie Lucas and ASPCA spokesdog DaVinci on Friday to launch Bolt Across America—a coast-to-coast fundraising event to promote the Disney film Bolt, which stars Cyrus. Bolt Across America centers around four Bolt fans who will roll from city to city in a giant hamster ball attempting amazing feats and raising money for the ASPCA!

CosmoGirl Drops In On the ASPCA!

The “A” would like to give a shout out to the animal-loving girly girls over at CosmoGirl magazine. They raised over $2,000 for us by opening up the doors of their prize closet—filled with all kinds of goodies from their corporate sponsors—and selling it all to help us out! Every year CosmoGirl chooses a lucky charity to benefit from this prize closet sale, and because Senior Web Editor Deanne Hess LOVES animals, she chose the ASPCA this year.

Deanne brought two of her summer interns up to our New York City headquarters to deliver the gift. As you can see, they were definitely lovin’ it up with the pooches. The little Jack Russell terrier on their laps is seven-year-old Sorbet, and the snow white pit mix is pretty Pearl. Look how she’s reaching out to Deanne with her left paw!

After hanging out in our adoption facility with all the kitties in Mancattan and the pups on Bark Avenue, Deanne decided to give her CosmoGirl readers a little animal welfare nudge, reminding them not to ignore all the great furry personalities in shelters who are waiting to find families. Says this compassionate young lady, “These dogs and cats need your help, and I urge all of you to consider adopting before going to a breeder.”

Want a loyal lass who loves to smooch? Sheba’s the one—an affectionate, seven-year-old pit bull with a charming underbite and an ever-wagging rear end. She’s sugary sweet, and like any self-respecting pooch, she’ll work hard for a cookie.

“She loves to spoon!” says Lauren Bolduc, ASPCA Assistant Manager of Shelter Staff and Sheba’s foster mom. “At bedtime, she cuddles right up to you and sleeps a ten-hour night. She’s an incredible dog—probably the most loving dog I’ve ever met.”

Strictly monogamous, Sheba reserves her kisses for the human kind, and prefers to live in a single pet household, one free of other cats and dogs vying for your love. Looking for a playmate by land and sea? Meet Flounder, a five-year-old black-and-white explorer who leaps tall furniture in a single pounce. A water bowl diver, this kitty finds the meaning of life in a good romp, but always knows when to say when.

“Flounder’s a tough kitty!” says Margaret McLaughlin, Director of Veterinary Technicians at the ASPCA’s Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital. “He believes he's a dog, and loves to play ball and catch, and snooze in shopping bags. He investigates everyone who comes into my office, and will politely let you know when he is tired of playing with you.”

Though our fun-loving Flounder is playful and charming, he doesn’t much care for the canine kind and would prefer to live in a single cat household. Saved! ASPCA Vet Rescues Rottie Who Ate Bottle Cap

Benny, a four-year-old Rottweiler with a strong stomach and a taste for “street food,” is a true New Yorker. Earlier this year, he arrived at the ASPCA’s Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital in New York City and, according to Dr. Robert Reisman, Medical Coordinator at BMAH, began passing bits of glass in his stool. Radiographs indicated tiny shards scattered throughout the dog’s digestive system. Reisman knew Benny would continue to eliminate the broken glass, but he was troubled by a more serious sign on the radiograph: the outline of a bottle cap stagnant in Benny’s stomach.

Wary of performing major surgery, Dr. Louise Murray, the hospital’s Director of Medicine, decided to take a less aggressive approach to removing the cap. Passing an endoscope (fiber optic technology attached to a tiny camera) through the mouth, down the esophagus, and into the stomach, Murray surveyed Benny’s GI tract on a computer screen. She quickly located the bright green cap, but soon lost it among excessive fluid, hair and other foreign objects in the dog’s stomach. Clearing the debris, she passed a long, grabbing instrument through the endoscope to remove a piece of Styrofoam as well as a mass of hair, glass, twine and twigs. After more than an hour of persistence and patience, Murray located and removed the bottle cap, sparing Benny from invasive surgery.

Months later, Benny is enjoying a full recovery—and an extra thirty pounds—with the help of caring ASPCA staffers and a nutritious diet. Currently available at the ASPCA Adoption Center, now he just needs to meet a permanent dining partner, one who will spoil him with a buffet of love...and healthy treats!

Two NYC Dog Owners Arrested For Animal Cruelty

ASPCA Humane Law Enforcement agents recently arrested two New York City men for unrelated incidents of animal neglect. Each man is charged with one count of misdemeanor animal cruelty and faces up to one year in jail and a $2,000 fine.

On June 19, ASPCA Special Agent Joseph Vais arrested Brooklyn resident Constantin Golie, 60. An anonymous tip led Agent Vais and another ASPCA officer to Golie’s basement, where they found Baba, a 12-year-old chow chow. Baba had no food or water, and she was suffering from severe matting and an ear infection. Baba was rushed to the ASPCA’s Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital (BMAH).

And on Monday, June 23, ASPCA Special Agent Debbie Koch arrested Bronx resident John Monserrate, 30. Monserrate brought his 10-week-old male pit bull, Trux, to BMAH in late April, and veterinarians saw that the pup was dehydrated and starving, and had multiple untreated wounds. He was taken into ASPCA custody and received lifesaving medical care.

“When Trux came in, he weighed 5.9 pounds,” says Dr. Robert Reisman, Medical Coordinator of Animal Cruelty Cases at BMAH. “After one month in our care, his weight increased to 16 pounds. That’s a 171-percent increase—more than double the typical 50- to 75-percent growth rate for a healthy puppy his age. This proves that Trux had been underfed, and I have no doubt that he was critically ill when he came to us.”

Both men voluntarily relinquished ownership of their dogs to the ASPCA, and shelter staffers anticipate that Baba and Trux will be made available for adoption in the near future.

ASPCA Pet of the Week: This Year’s MVP (Most Valuable Pooch)

Want a brainy boy who knows how to express himself? Charlie is a one-year-old pit bull with hip brindle markings and a liberal kissing policy. Earlier this year, he won second prize in the ASPCA’s annual talent show for the coolest crawl in New York City.

“Charlie is my favorite dog in the shelter!” says Trish McMillan, ASPCA Senior Manager of Animal Behavior. “He's smart and affectionate, loves playing with other dogs, knows obedience commands like Sit, Down, Shake and Roll Over, and has the fastest crawl you've ever seen!”

Our charming Charlie has a lot of energy, and would like to meet someone who’s ready to shake it like a Polaroid picture and nurture his intelligence with thorough training. A Horse Is a Horse, Even a Small Horse, Of Course

Calling all fans of the noble equine! If you've been looking for an excuse to visit New York (besides the infamous Naked Cowboy), here's a good one. Check out the American Museum of Natural History’s new “The Horse” exhibit, running now through January 4, 2009.

Last weekend, the ASPCA joined in on the opening day festivities, displaying a full-size replica of a vintage horse ambulance, once seen on the streets of New York City in the late 1800's. Members of our staff were on hand to answer questions about the ASPCA's history of horse protection, and showcased select original equine protection artifacts from the ASPCA's archives. You can find out about the work of our Equine Program, which provides lifesaving grants to equine rescue groups throughout the country.

Our ambulance was definitely cool, but the star of the festivities was Thumbelina, the world’s smallest horse—she’s just 17 1/2 inches tall! She attracted major crowds, who gathered to watch her even when she was in a peaceful slumber.

If you're not familiar with the Thumbelina Charitable Foundation, it's worth checking out. Thumbelina travels the United States visiting special needs children.

Come On, Ilene! Come On Over to NYC, That Is!

After putting out a call for the Community Leader of 2008—the animal enthusiast who carried out the most inventive, effective ideas for going orange on ASPCA Day—we finally found our lady. Pennsylvania mom and shelter volunteer Ilene Wellner created an orange campaign that sent such a ripple through her community that Philadelphia’s NBC affiliate, NBC10 News, was on the scene to cover her final “Go Orange for Animals” events.




Ilene’s multifaceted grassroots campaign started with her own personal network of friends, whom she called to action on the days leading up to April 10. During that time she organized a towel and blanket drive and a bake sale and bagel benefit, staffed by children and adult volunteers wearing orange ASPCA gear. She sent out hundreds of flyers and more than a thousand emails encouraging community members to donate much-needed supplies, to attend fundraising events and to wear orange on ASPCA Day. Ilene’s ASPCA Day orchestrations culminated with celebrations at two schools, where happy orange-clad students were taught about kindness to animals and were visited by even happier adopted dogs. When one student was asked what he had learned on ASPCA Day, he replied, “I learned to always be kind to animals and not buy a pet in a pet store.” All supplies and funds generated by Ilene’s campaign were brought to local shelters and the ASPCA, and her efforts inspired an outpouring of donations that are still coming in.

So, now for the good part. What did she win? We brought Ilene and her young daughter, Samantha, to New York City for a three-day/two-night trip to visit the ASPCA’s headquarters, including a guided tour of our newly renovated, state-of-the-art adoption center, an opportunity to meet and get photographed with ASPCA Humane Law Enforcement officer Annemarie Lucas ASPCA President & CEO Ed Sayres.

Here’s what Ilene has to say about her trip:

"I loved my visit to the ASPCA and meeting all of the wonderful and dedicated people who work there! It felt great to be surrounded by people who have the same passion that I do about animal welfare. I really enjoyed touring your facility, seeing the Meet Your Match program at work and experiencing the feeling that the staff genuinely cares about the work they are doing, all contributing to a very good and important worthy cause. I was impressed by the way the adoptable animals are housed and cared for. Loving photography as well as animals, viewing the spectacular photographs of the animals who have found their families was moving and motivating. Meeting Ed, Annemarie and Melissa was the best! Having the opportunity to exchange stories and ideas to implement in the future with them was the highlight. I hope that this is just the beginning for me with the ASPCA. I want to continue contributing to the growth and success of your very important mission. Before this week, the website was the face of your organization to me (which I think is GREAT), but now I feel the heart of what's behind it! If you were to ask my daughter what the highlight of her trip was, she would say meeting Annemarie, who is her new idol--and the pear tart with vanilla ice cream she had for lunch! Adoption Diaries: 'Tis The Season For Overwhelming Cuteness

Reason 893 to love this time of year--coat season for doggies! It was a visual feast to watch the parade of dogs entering and leaving our adoption center this week, sporting their handsome sweaters and coats.

I have a thing about spaniels, and Lady is an especially pretty one! She's nine years old and has stunning brown spots on her white fur. And her ears speak for themselves--amazing! Just look at her photo!

While Lady was all beauty, I especially fell for her less attractive (by society standards, harumph!) poodle roommate, Max. I read on the kennel card that he wasn't at all playful. But he must have come out of his shell since that was written, because if this isn't playful, what is?



Sure, he's not exactly an Olympic athlete, but who needs that when you have a dog who can cuddle? Max and I curled up together on his bed for the longest time. I was in furry heaven.

So remember Whitney, my first love? Well, I'm in love again. The Persian kittens above are comically named Romeo and Juliet. They're a bit scary looking, but I think they're the coolest cats on the planet. Despite the permanent scowls on their face and black noses (as opposed to pink), they curled up together on my lap and purred an purred as I stroked their soft, long, fur. Have I mentioned how much I love cats with long fur? I'd take these guys home in a heartbeat. They probably won't be there by the time I visit next. So this love affair is sadly short lived, I'm sure.

Adoption Diaries: Beauty

I can't help but boast about our adoption center here at the ASPCA. The fact that we have habitats to enable cats to socialize with one another amazes me! I was hanging out in the habitat by the front window, taking notes on a little black teenaged kitten, when I was bombarded by a hunk of orange love. Riley came roaring over to me, lept on to my lap, and began purring, rubbing and licking--he made himself right at home! I'll never know what made him like me so much, but Riley was a wonderful start to my time at the shelter after a long day at work.


Hard as it was, I eventually managed to pry myself away from Riley and move on (covered in orange hair, naturally.)

This is Levi, a gorgeous collie. His beauty took my breath away! Just look at those ears, and that wonderful tongue! Levi is almost two years old and chock full of puppy energy. He was so excited when I walked into his kennel that he could hardly stand it! Some lucky adopter is going to have tons of fun throwing around a tennis ball with Levi. I can't wait to hear about it!

Ah, Art. Art may just have one eye, but I don't think it will take too long for him to be adopted. A. We have many beautiful souls who come in and are taken with animals who are handicapped or have special needs, and B. Art is the mushiest lover imaginable!

Adoption Diaries: Reigning Cats and Dogs

Elyse's Adoption Diary:

My first order of business was to play with Jersey. I confess I had no good reason except that she looked soft and would feel good in my arms.

She preferred roaming around to cuddling with me, but she stopped by every so often for a pat.

T.J. was similar. I love orange tabbies (I have two at home!), so when he gave me the eye, taking him out to play was a no-brainer. He tricked me, though. It wasn't me he wanted--he was after an adventure. He left me to explore the "neighborhood." When he finally did come to say hello, I was amazed at what a gorgeous, thick tail he had! Will you please look at this thing?

He was adopted the next day. No surprise there.

And now for the canine section of this diary--this is Max. I fell for him immediately because of his ears, one erect and one floppy. He's a couch potato sort of gent, and is looking for a quiet home with older kids (if any).

Oh my gosh, lots of puppy cuteness going on at the ASPCA this week! Observe!

Adoption Diaries: Sweet Success

Strike up the band! My girl Whitney was adopted yesterday! I've mentioned her here a few times now. I probably shouldn't play favorites, but I couldn't help it with her. As soon as I heard her purr for the first time--it was the loudest purr I'd ever heard--I was hooked. I looked forward to visiting her every week, and now that she's gone, I'll miss the heck out of her. Ironically, I found out she now lives in an apartment just four blocks from mine! But I was specifically told, "No stalking the adopted animals, Elyse." Darn! I'll have to settle for the happy thought that she's powering her new home with that motor of hers. Thinking about it makes me smile.

If that news isn't enough for ya, I've got more. Jazzy Joyce, a 10-year-old Norwegian Forest, was here since March of 2006. It was difficult to find a home for her, because not only is she a senior, but she requires thyroid treatment and careful handling. Happily, an experienced cat owner met Jazzy and they were a perfect match! Our whole staff is misty eyed over this adoption.

Well, as much as I love success stories, let's get down to business. I want to see more adoptions, so here goes! These guys reside together in one of our cat habitats:

They are Ramon, Gustavo and Jonah. Give these playful kittens a toy and life is good! But watch out for Jonah, he's a smart one. If you try to hold a toy out of reach, he will find a way to get to it.

The Greatest Role of All

Last Monday, Emmy Award-winning actress Kristen Johnston adopted Pinky, a seven-year-old pit bull mix from the ASPCA adoption center.

The friendly, feisty pooch caught the eye of Johnston, who spotted her at a recent ASPCA mobile adoption event in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn. Pinky, formerly called Cookie by our staff, has been at the ASPCA since she was rescued by Special Agent Adam Gankiewicz of the ASPCA’s Humane Law Enforcement department last summer. She underwent surgery to repair her broken hip at the ASPCA’s Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital.

A star of the stage and screen, Johnston received her Emmy Award for her role as Sally on 3rd Rock from the Sun, and shone as hysterical man-hating Beatrice in Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing at the Delacorte Theatre in Central Park. You also know her as Lexi Featherstone from Sex and the City and Drew Barrymore's older sister, Rhonda, in the romantic-comedy Music & Lyrics (she stole the show in that one!).

But we think her finest role is that of dog lover—she is an avid supporter of animal rescue, having rescued several lovable, homeless pups in the past. We wish her and Pinky years of happiness!

Adoption Diaries: A Day of Firsts

It was kind of by accident that I ended up helping a cat find a home! The folks at the adoption center desk were super busy (those are the days we like and want, of course) and asked if I was a cat socializer. I said I was, and next thing I knew I was escorting a mom and her two kids to meet Baby Boy!

Baby Boy was an easy "sell" with his gorgeous coat and unlimited affection. When he sat on the 5-year-old's lap, that was that. The family was hooked and Baby Boy went home.

Feeling good, I took Fresca for a walk. This was my first solo walk, both at the ASPCA and in my life. So what sounds pretty simple and mundane for most dog people was intimidating for me! Of course, I chose an easy-going small senior who was sweet as could be and gave me no problems. She was a pro--she knew exactly what to do and which way to go when we hit the streets. She practically walked me!

This here is Mattie. I caught a great moment on film, in which he was jumping for joy as someone approached to walk him--unfortunately, I had my camera turned the wrong way. D'oh! But I'm including the clip anyway, just 'cause it's so gosh darn cute.

"Wheeeeee, someone's coming to walk me!"

I spent a long time with Magoo, a blind old boy. At first we were both hesitant with each other, but after his initial investigation, he decided I was a good egg and sat on my lap so we could exchange purrs.

Good Livin’—Dogs, Big and Small, In the Big Apple

If you have your heart set on a nice, big dog but don’t think you can have one because of your urban living space, we have some good news: you can share your studio with a dog of any size, as long as it’s one of the right breed and temperament.

In a WBAI radio interview, Monday, July 3^, at 8:40 A.M., the ASPCA’s Allison Cardona said, “Some people think, ‘I have a small apartment, so I need a small dog,’ but actually it can be the opposite. Small, loud, barky dogs don’t always make the best apartment dogs because they have so much energy, while a Great Dane might sit around your couch all day and be quiet.”

Here are a few examples of big breeds appropriate for small apartments:

• St. Bernard
• Mastiff
• Great Dane
• Old English Sheepdog

Of course, there are terrific breeds of small dogs who aren’t as “barky,” suitable for apartment living. Examples are:

• Pug
• Chihuahua
• Poodle
• Dachshund

The great thing about adopting from a shelter is that you can find just the right dog to suit your lifestyle. Big or small, these doggies all have lots of love to give. Visit your local shelter or check out the ASPCA’s adoptable animals.

ASPCA in the News: The Conquering Hoard - Sniffing Out Animal Lovers Who Care Too Much

By the time Steven, a 16-year Washington Heights resident and former Wall Street broker, had climbed the stairs to his apartment—4D—the smell had grown so strong it consumed the hallway. Jingling his keys, Steven, 62, paused and said, as if giving fair warning, "The cats have really torn up the place."

He opened the door, and a hot, stifling stench came crashing through the corridor.

And that sickly smell—or more aptly, the anonymous complaints about it—is what brought an animal-hoarding interventionist here in the first place. Allison Cardona, the chief hoarding investigator at the Manhattan-based ASPCA, has conducted these types of rescue missions all over New York City lately. In 2005 the ASPCA, as part of the Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals, helped the city get thousands of dollars in grant money to launch an anti-hoarding program. Administered by the city's Department of Health, the pilot project pairs Cardona with a social worker who hooks up troubled hoarders with medical care, food stamps, and other services. Cardona, meanwhile, deals with the animals—first, spaying and neutering them; and then, trying to place them in adopted homes.

NYC Pet of the Week: Meet Benge

This five-year-old cocker spaniel may be small for his breed, but he carries his weight in affection. “Benge is truly remarkable,” says his foster mom, who took care of him until he was ready for adoption. “He’s so sweet and loving. He's fully housebroken, he gets along very well with cats, dogs and babies―and he's smart. You couldn't ask for better qualities in a dog.”

Unfortunately, this little guy didn't have the best start in life. “Benge came to the ASPCA as the result of a cruelty case," says Gail Buchwald, ASPCA Senior Vice President, Adoption Center & Mobile Clinic, "but with lots of TLC, he has healed beautifully."

Given all that Benge has been through, it's no surprise that he might become a little bit anxious when his human family leaves him, but this youthful pooch is learning how to separate. His latest challenge is eating peanut butter out of a Kong while learning to spend time away from his "person."

NYC Pet of the Week: Meet Marge

GIVE PEACE—AND PURRS!—A CHANCE
Even though she is a bit shy, Marge, a 2 1/2-year-old kitty currently at the ASPCA Adoption Center, is very sweet and enjoys socializing. “She likes to be picked up inside her bed, like a taco!” says Kat Miller, ASPCA Senior Behavior Counselor, describing Marge’s peaceful approach to playtime.

Marge came to the ASPCA as a young cat and was quickly adopted. But upon being diagnosed with moderate inflammatory bowel disease, she was soon brought back. Unable to afford Marge’s treatment, her owner wanted the cat to be in a loving home that could.

Marge is now on medication and a low-fat, high-fiber diet, and is available for adoption. The ideal home for her a kitty with her mellow personality and health needs? A quiet household with kids age 10 and up.

NYC Press Release: Homeless Cats on Rikers Island Reduced by Half

ASPCA, Animal Welfare Groups Celebrate Five-Year Anniversary of Landmark TNR Project

NEW YORK, March 28, 2007— The ASPCA^® (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals^®), in collaboration with other animal welfare groups, is celebrating the five-year anniversary of a landmark trap-neuter-return (TNR) project that reduced by more than half the number of stray, free-roaming feral cats on Rikers Island, the largest jail facility in the United States located just north of Queens in the Bronx.

In March 2002, in an effort to humanely manage an exploding population of stray and feral cats, animal welfare groups including the ASPCA, NYC’s Animal Care and Control, Humane Society of New York and Neighborhood Cats, Inc., joined forces with the NYC Department of Corrections and Department of Health to spay and neuter more than 300 feral cats and develop a long-term plan for their care.

NYC Pet of the Week: Meet Maddie!

At just 2 1/2 years old, Maddie, a pit bull mix currently awaiting adoption at the ASPCA, is the complete package. Not only is she playful, sweet, affectionate and loyal, she is an extremely intelligent girl who has had a lot of obedience training.

“Maddie needs a lot of exercise and mental stimulation, and loves obedience training,” says the ASPCA’s Trish McMillan, Senior Manager, Animal Behavior. “It would be great if her future owner took her to classes so she can show off what she knows.”

We gave Maddie medical rehabilitation and loving care after our Humane Law Enforcement agents rescued her from neglect. She is now ready to find a caring household where she can be the only pet, enjoy a good game of fetch and receive mental stimulation with clear direction and boundaries.

New Video! ASPCA Charm School: Talented Hounds Abound

On Friday, February 2, the ASPCA Charm School Talent Show for Dogs proved just how adoptable and trainable shelter dogs are. The 13 canine contestants showed off their tricks in front of an enthusiastic audience of television crews, photographers and ASPCA staffers.

Our judges, two-time Tony Award winner Bernadette Peters, radio personality Angie Martinez, The Bachelor’s Prince Lorenzo Borghese and ASPCA Humane Law Enforcement agent Annemarie Lucas, gave their rapt attention to the furry contenders. Dogs were judged on overall presentation, attentiveness to the handler and creativity of the tricks performed.

"The remarkable thing is that these are all dogs who have been rescued from neglectful situations, so they've come so far," says the ASPCA’s Allison Cardona.

Press Release: Stray Voltage Causes Concern for New Yorkers and their Pets Following Possible Electrocution of Dog

NEW YORK, February 15, 2007—The possible electrocution of a small dog in New York City during recent storms has raised concerns over the phenomena of stray voltage, just one more hazard of wet, winter weather.

The cause of death of a one-year-old Boston terrier that walked over an icy manhole cover has not been determined, and the city’s Consolidated Edison (Con Ed) officials haven’t confirmed if the cover or other nearby metal objects had been electrified. However, the dog’s death could be the latest in a series of episodes where pets and their handlers have been harmed by stray voltage.

The talent show helped kick off "I Love NYC Pets" month, which features adoption events by various New York City animal welfare and rescue groups throughout February. Thirteen dexterous dogs, all available for adoption at the ASPCA, and their handlers trumped their many talents for a panel of celebrity judges that includes legendary Broadway actress and noted animal supporter Bernadette Peters (two-time Tony Award-winner for Song and Dance and Annie Get Your Gun, also Gypsy, Into the Woods, etc.), reality TV’s"Bachelor" Prince Lorenzo Borghese, hit HOT 97 FM DJ Angie Martinez, and the ASPCA’s Supervisory Special Investigator and star of the hit show "Animal Precinct," Annemarie Lucas.

NYC Pet of the Week: Meet Jazzy Joyce!

Looking to make a faithful friend? Meet Jazzy Joyce—she’s all that. Sweet and calm, this four-year-old tortie-colored Norwegian forest cat will climb up onto your lap for some quality time. Like other members of her breed, this feline likes receiving quiet, calm attention from people.

“Jazzy Joyce doesn’t have that crazy kitten behavior, yet is still young enough to be active and play,” says ASPCA Cares’ Allison Cardona. “That’s the nice thing about adult cats—they are loyal but less boisterous companions.”

In addition to providing love, it will be important for Jazzy Joyce’s new owner to ensure that she receives regular medical attention, since she has a hyperactive thyroid gland and needs periodic blood tests. This long-haired lady will also need daily brushing (our medical staff gave her a shave, as you can see in the photo, to remove some mats), and we recommend that she be the only pet in a home with kids ages 12 and up.

NYC Pet of the Week: Meet Diva!

Diva the Rottweiler mix is already a star at our 92nd Street adoption facilities—and very soon the entire world will see her shine, too. Just ask ASPCA’s Victoria Wells, Manager of Shelter Training and Behavior, who handpicked the five-year-old canine to appear on VH1’s Ego Trip’s White Rapper Show.

Although this canine ingénue is new to the biz, we weren’t at all surprised to learn that Diva performed like a true pro during the recent taping, where she was made up and modeled with one of the show’s rappers. “Not only is Diva sweet, she is very smart,” says ASPCA Cares’ Allison Cardona. “She picks things up quickly, and is so easy to train.” And of course, she looked simply smashing in the pretty pink bow she wears on the episode.

ASPCA in the News: Partnership Brings New Hope to Thousands of Pets

ASPCA funding, distributed by city, has reduced number of animals euthanized by more than a third.

Sergio, a year-old stray cat, does not, as the saying goes, have nine lives.

But thanks to a partnership between the Mayor's Alliance for New York City's Animals and the ASPCA, he and thousands of other pets have a better shot at long and healthy lives.

In fact, due to the partnership's efforts, the number of pets euthanized since the group formed in 2002 has dropped by more than a third.

ASPCA in News: Tips On How To Keep Your Pet Happy During The Holidays

December 18, 2006–Holiday decorations, presents, and delicious meals–the perfect ingredients for a happy holiday–but they can also put a damper on holiday spirits if your kitty or pooch has a taste of it. NY1’s Stephanie Simon spoke with Dr. Jennifer Lander of the ASPCA about ways to pet-proof your home.

First up: decorations. To your pets, they can look a lot like toys. "

Decorations made of glass or anything toxic like the bubbling lights can be very dangerous if they break open,” says Dr. Lander. “Tinsel or any linear foreign material like ribbons or shredding can cause intestinal blockage. I would try to keep all decorations high up out of their reach. So decorating just maybe the top two thirds of your tree. Or using maybe safer materials like paper or wooden ornaments around the base of the tree. The use of a baby gate to keep an animal away from the entire room where the tree is. Water well covers to make sure the animal isn't going to try to drink toxic water from the Christmas tree base."

ASPCA Pet of the Week: Meet Gravy

OK, so he hasn’t yet learned to wave—but energetic, enthusiastic Gravy will be delighted to meet and greet you when you visit him at our 92nd Street adoption facilities.

That’s saying quite a bit, since this three-year-old Australian kelpie mix had a rough start in life. “It’s a sad story,” explains ASPCA Cares’ Allison Cardona. “Gravy was seized by our Humane Law Enforcement officers last January. His muzzle was bound with a cord, and he had also been stabbed over his left eye.” Thanks to tender loving care at our ASPCA Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital, Gravy recovered and rebounded—and his wonderful personality is really starting to come out.

“He’s an all-around goofy, young, eager-to-please dog,” says Allison. We also must point out that he’ll pretty much do anything for a treat, and has already mastered his basic manners. “He’s a herding dog, so it’s important for him to have a job and keep busy,’” says Allison.

ASPCA in the News: Dog Saved as Owner is Busted

December 10, 2006 -- A Queens woman was busted for animal cruelty yesterday, after horrified city officials found her emaciated dog tied to a doorknob - and suffering for the past month from a slit throat.

Marisol Zayas, 26, of 27th Avenue in Long Island City, faces up to a year in jail for leaving her 2-year-old husky, Trinity, to suffer without medical care after investigators found a 10-inch slit in the dog's throat, said ASPCA Special Agent Joseph Pentangelo.

"You could see the dog's windpipe," he said of the wound , which took 25 stitches to close.

Queens Man Sentenced in Animal Cruelty Case

NEW YORK, November 29, 2006—The ASPCA^® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals^®), in conjunction with Queens district attorney Richard Brown, announced the sentencing of Keidel Guy, 20, of Queens for Felony Animal Cruelty. Guy was sentenced to 16 months in prison.

In October 2005, ASPCA Special Agents Joseph Lemos and Omar Negrillo seized a mother dog and her emaciated pup from Guy’s house after finding another puppy dead from starvation.

ASPCA in the News: ASPCA Mobile Animal Clinic To Provide Low-Cost Neutering Services

Instead of pet owners going to the vet for the spaying or neutering their pet, the American Society for the Protection of Cruelty to Animals is bringing the vet to pet owners across the five boroughs.

The organization has a mobile animal clinic that is now offering free and low-cost spaying and neutering to low-income pet owners. The foundation said it hopes to provide the service to about 15,000 animals.

A Brooklyn man is facing a felony charge after he allegedly threw his cat out a third-story window last month, officials said yesterday.

Don Carter, 24, defenestrated the 6-pound cat, Midnight, on October 18 after she trespassed into a bedroom where she wasn't supposed to roam, officials said. Agents from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals yesterday arrested Carter, who has a history of convictions for drug crimes.

He faces up to four years in prison on a charge of aggravated animal cruelty, a spokesman for the ASPCA, Joseph Pentangelo, said. Carter was also charged with reckless endangerment because the cat nearly hit a passer-by, he said.

ASPCA in the News: "Tabby's kitten was killed, now she needs a new home"

Call her "Lucky Penny."

The two-year-old tabby cat, who allegedly was almost killed by a raging Port Richmond man last month, underwent surgery yesterday and will be up for adoption to a loving home in a few weeks.

October 4, 2006 -- The goal is to raise awareness - and hopefully some money - to turn all of New York City's animal shelters into no-kill operations by 2010. Sponsored by the ASPCA and the volunteer artist collaborative Rational Animal, the show “should make for an interesting night,” promises Beastie Adam (“Ad-Rock”) Horovitz.

“I'm just a dog guy,” explains Horovitz, seated alongside his canine sidekick, Roberta “Bobbi” Peterson, a mixed breed he rescued from a shelter in April 2005, when she was roughly three years old.

Along with his now decades-old band, Horovitz has become something of a do-gooder, speaking out against war, religious persecution and, now, the inhumane treatment of animals.

Although we aren’t sure of the extent of his hearing impairment, our ASPCA Behavior staff can show Artichoke’s new family some simple techniques used to train a hearing-impaired dog. Soon, you’ll have him reading hand signals like notes on a page.

ASPCA in the News: Renovated shelters are the cat's meow

The surroundings are plush. There are duplexes with glass walls, funky modular furniture, brightly colored cushions and hallways lined with elegant portraits.

This is no luxurious Manhattan co-op, at least not one inhabited by people. The residents enjoying these high-gloss digs are more than 350 homeless cats and dogs living in the newly renovated shelter unveiled Monday by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA).

With the $5 million upgrade, the ASPCA replaced cages with glass cubicles, cinderblock walls with waterproof Corian. They installed high-energy air filters and stucco ceilings to cut down on odors and noise. Piped-in sounds soothe the animals. Cats, for example, get the sounds of birdsongs and babbling brooks.

Press Release: ASPCA to Unveil Newly Renovated New York City Shelter

$5 Million Space, Only Vertical Shelter of Its Kind, Accommodates 40% More Cats & Dogs in Deluxe, State-of-the-Art Enclosures and Communal Housing

(NEW YORK, NY) September 13, 2006 -- The ASPCA will unveil its newly renovated shelter at 424 East 92nd Street in New York City during a grand opening Monday, September 18 at 11 a.m.

The placement of 200 cats and dogs in their new habitats, as well as ribbon cuttings and acknowledgements by community leaders and ASPCA President Ed Sayres, will mark the occasion.

The grand opening marks the completion of a $5 million remodeling effort that began in 2005 and covers 12,000 square feet. The new interior, which includes the lobby and fourth floors, can house 86 more animals a 40% increase over its previous capacity. That’s twice as much colony housing for cats and four times the space for dogs.

Press Release: ASPCA Agents Arrest Woman for Felony Animal Cruelty

(New York, NY) September 13, 2006 -- ASPCA Special Agents arrested Rosalda Faraci, 30, of Queens for one count of aggravated animal cruelty, one count of animal cruelty, and one count of criminal possession of a weapon for wrapping a dog’s testicles with a rubber band.

On August 15, 2006, the ASPCA responded to a complaint of a 10-month-old Cairn terrier named Lucio being beaten in the backyard of the defendant's home. The dog’s testicles were tightly wrapped with a rubber band, and a foul odor emanated from the injured area. Lucio was taken to the ASPCA Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital for treatment. According to veterinarians there, the injured site was severely infected and caused the puppy great pain. Lucio was also significantly underweight. After surgery to correct his condition, Lucio is doing well and the ASPCA is hopeful for a complete recovery.

If convicted, Ms. Faraci faces up to four years in prison.

Summer Spay Day Is A Success

The ASPCA, Animal Care & Control of New York City and the Mayor’s Alliance for New York City’s Animals, Inc. sponsored free and low-cost spay/neuter surgeries for cats and dogs belonging to qualifying area residents on August 20 at St. Mary's Recreation Center in The Bronx. We had an excellent turnout, and a total of 155 cats and dogs were spayed and neutered.

Press Release: ASPCA Arrests Bronx Resident For Attacking Pomeranian with a Mop Handle

(New York, NY) September 12, 2006 -- Special agents of the ASPCA arrested Edwin Roman, 44, on September 10 outside his Bronx residence at 1221 Brook Avenue for assaulting and seriously injuring his family’s pet dog, Lucky.

Following the assault, which occurred on July 18, 2006, the 10-lb. male Pomeranian was taken to NYC Animal Care and Control (AC&C) in Brooklyn by a relative of the suspect. Employees at AC&C alerted the ASPCA; Lucky was removed and taken to the ASPCA’s Bergh Memorial Animal hospital. At the ASPCA, veterinarians performed extensive surgery to correct Lucky’s jaw, which was shattered when the suspect attacked him with a mop handle.

The ASPCA carried out an investigation which led to the arrest of the suspect. Mr. Roman is being charged with one count of aggravated animal cruelty, a felony, and one count of criminal possession of a weapon.

Lucky’s prognosis is good and he is recovering.

ASPCA in the News: Cute and Furry, Some Say. A Beaten Dog, a Court Finds.

New York Times - Orders of protection are not unusual in New York courts, but one issued yesterday by a Queens judge to protect a 5-year-old is believed to be the first of its kind, according to an animal society special agent.

The 5-year-old is a dog, Bebe, a bichon frisé from Lindenwood.

The order, signed by Judge Alex J. Zigman of Queens Civil Court, says that Frederick Fontanez, 20, a friend of Bebe’s owner, Derek Lopez, must maintain a distance of at least 100 yards from both the dog and Mr. Lopez.

ASPCA in the News: New York dog gets first restraining order

NEW YORK (AFP) - A New York judge has issued the first restraining order on behalf of a dog, using a new state law that offers protection to pets, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) said.

A 20-year-old man was ordered to stay at least 90 meters away from the five-year-old bichon frise, Bebe, after he was arrested and charged with injury to an animal for allegedly hitting the pup.

The dog's owner, a friend who had been fighting with the accused man, returned home to find Bebe covered in bruises. The man faces up to a year in prison for beating the animal.

ASPCA Presents $37,595 to Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals

Compassionate New Yorkers Meet ASPCA’s Challenge to Help Save City’s Homeless Pets



Ed Sayres, ASPCA president, presented Jane Hoffman, president of the Mayor’s Alliance for New York City’s Animals, with a donation of $37,595, raised by the ASPCA during a July campaign aimed at protecting the city’s homeless pets.

Funds are being allocated to fuel a transport van operated by the Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals that shuttles animals from city shelters to local rescue groups and foster homes until the animals can be adopted. Most of these animals would otherwise be euthanized because the rising cost of gasoline had curtailed the alliance’s efforts. The alliance budgeted $15,000 for the transport van, but costs have since tripled.

The ASPCA pledged $10,000 on July 13 to the alliance and challenged compassionate New Yorkers to match its donation by July 31. In just three days, animal lovers more than met that challenge, so the ASPCA continued the campaign through the end of July and raised $27,595 over its $10K pledge. All of the proceeds are being donated to the Alliance.

“The Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals’ transport effort is one way we’re working to save the lives of adoptable cats and dogs in our city and work toward creating a humane community,” said Sayres.

“Jacob is a very special dog,” says the ASPCA Behavior department’s Trish McMillian of the eight-year-old Lab/mastiff mix currently on the lookout for his forever home. After a rough start in life, the gentle golden oldie is ready for his retirement. “He would love to just curl up on the couch with you,” says McMillian.

But don’t let Jacob’s age and well-developed “cuddle gene” fool you—our elder statesman hasn’t lost and get-up-and-go. “He would be great on long, leisurely walks,” says McMillian.

Sweet, in shape…and smart, too? Yup, Jacob’s got it all. He knows Sit, Stay, Shake, Come and Down and, reports McMillian, “Being as motivated to learn as he is, we’re sure he can learn even more commands.”

She may be low-maintenance in terms of exercise (no frenzied sessions of fetch or marathon runs necessary for this dainty canine!), but is demanding of something you’ll have to give a lot of—attention and love. “She likes petting,” explains Benson, “and prefers the surroundings of a soft bed to an open field.”

This smart girl knows how to sit and will work for a tasty treat, and would do best as the only dog in the household. Abbott and Costello, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Thelma and Louise, Butch and Sundance…Harley and Big Ben?

Yup, you heard it here first—Harley and Big Ben! “They’re a natural pair,” says the ASPCA’s Barbara McDonald of the two tabby boys currently waiting for adoption at the ASPCA’s 92nd Street headquarters. Although they didn’t come in together, the cats quickly became best friends.

“We were a bit worried about them at first,” says McDonald, who is in charge of Feline Enrichment at the “A.” “But once they paired up, it’s remarkable how much they’ve both come out of their shells.” And together, they’re loving, bonded, sweet and affectionate to people—times two!

If you’re looking to adopt two cats, you certainly won’t have to worry about these guys getting along with each other—or with you. As ASPCA Cares’ David Benson explains, “We all need somebody to lean on, and these two bring out the best in each other. Come on down and meet this dynamic duo. You won’t be sorry!”

This week's Success Story: Meet Daphne

Jessica Casper and her boyfriend had just purchased a home with a yard. But what they really needed? “A dog, of course!” says Jessica.

“I had been wanting one for a long time,” she says, “so after a few months we checked out our local shelter.” Picking the perfect pooch is no easy task, and the couple couldn’t come to a decision—until one very excited shepherd/greyhound mix made the job a whole lot easier.
“Daphne was very playful when they brought her in, but she did eventually lie down,” says Jessica. “And at one point she just looked at me, and I knew she was the one.”

After quickly settling into her new home, Daphne is now a full-fledged member of the family. She loves her daily runs with Jessica’s boyfriend, and cuddling with her pet parents is also high on her list of fun things to do. But her all-time favorite activity? “Sneaking on our bed in the mornings to sleep with us!”

Brew-Ha-Ha: ASPCA Dogs Guzzle Heartland Brewery’s New Lager Treat for Canines

With the dog days of summer upon New York City, Heartland Brewery in Union Square joined representatives and rescued dogs from the ASPCA on July 25 to introduce pets and their humans to a new summer treat—Slobber Lager.

Made from the finest malted barley, beef stock and water, Slobber Lager is a slightly carbonated, non-alcoholic liquid treat (not a replacement for water) that is safe and yummy for all dogs young and old, large and small. NYC Pet of the Week: Cody

HI, CHIHUAHUA!

“Our sweet boy Cody had a rough start in life,” says ASPCA Cares’ David Benson of the little Chihuahua who was recently rescued by our Humane Law Enforcement agents. “He was very badly physically abused by his owners, and with all that happened to him, you’d think he’d have a grudge against people. But nothing could be further from the truth.”

A favorite among staffers at our 92nd Street headquarters, Cody has impressed everyone with his loving spirit. He tends to be a bit shy at first, explains Trish McMillan of the Animal Behavior department, “But once he knows you, you’re in his club—and that means he’ll let you rub his tummy and he’ll give you kisses in return!” In addition to his human buddies, Cody does well with other dogs his size—and loves kitties, too.

Our behavior team says Cody will do well in a home with another dog who is confident. Explains Benson, “This would help Cody continue the remarkable progress he’s made coming out of his shell and becoming the dog we all know he can be.” Additionally, Cody is a little frightened of walking on the street, but is more than happy to climb into a bag to be close to his person.

Jumping up on people? Pulling you down the street during walks? Our beautiful lady Erica has no time for funny stuff like that. She’s figured out that looking gorgeous and acting sweet are far better ways to get the attention of her human friends.

“Erica is fluffy, huggable and calm,” says Dr. Kat Miller of the ASPCA Behavior department. The pretty flat-coated retriever/Chow Chow mix prefers long strolls through the park to running on the sidewalk, and would love to curl up and watch a movie on the couch with her new owner.

New York City Pet of the Week: Meet Baxter

FIRST CHOICE FOR A SECOND CAT

“Baxter’s sweet little face has seen a lot in his first year of life,” says ASPCA Animal Placement’s Cherylyn Washington.

After his owner died in his apartment, Baxter went to live with his owner’s sister. When she became homeless and unable to care for him, Baxter was brought to the ASPCA’s 92nd Street headquarters. Strongly bonded to his owner, the handsome boy was very shy with us at first. “But thanks to the great work of our volunteers and staff,” says Washington, “Baxter’s made great progress—and our animal behaviorists believe he’ll bond again with someone in the right home.”

Big Apple Residents: Help Make NYC More Pet-Friendly!

As many of our loyal activists know, the ASPCA, along with other humane organizations, has been working for some time to pass legislation that would protect a tenant who wishes to keep his or her pet and to get another pet when the previous one has died. This is due to a court decision that held once a tenant gets a new pet, the three-month process required to waive the no-pet provision in renter’s leases must begin again. After many meetings and discussions, the legislation, now referred to as Int. 13, would protect pet owners already covered under the “3 month law” to get a “replacement” pet of the same species; the proposed legislation would cover the same number of animals the person has or had when he/she became covered under the law.
Unfortunately, Int. 13 is being vigorously opposed by the real estate industry. To help protect New York City pets and ensure that this legslation is passed, it is crucial that you contact your councilmember and urge him/her to support and co-sponsor this bill.

“It’s safe to say that the only thing these two have in common is the name,” says David Benson, ASPCA Cares, of the beautiful creamsicle-colored male cat who was brought to our 92nd Street headquarters by a Humane Law Enforcement officer. “Still, we can call Seneca a thinking person’s cat, as he is more than willing to fall sound asleep in your lap while you work diligently away at great matters of philosophy and art.”

New Video: Meet Sweet Pea

TWO-LEGGED WONDER YEARNS FOR A LOVING HOME!!!! Here at the ASPCA, we all agree that Sweet Pea is an absolute doll. This 4-year old pit mix was part of a cruelty investigation by the Humane Law Enforcement department. When her owners dropped Sweet Pea off at a shelter, she was thin, filthy, and unable to walk on her hind legs. HLE officers heard about her, and brought Sweet Pea to the ASPCA, where our wonderful vets could attend to her needs. As a result of her sad past, Sweet Pea suffers from hind leg paralysis, causing her to walk mainly on her front legs. (Oh, but she has strong front legs and loves to drag herself around!) Because of her strong will to live...and love...she was custom-fitted with a cart (donated by Eddie's Wheels of Shelbourne, MA). Watch the video to see Sweet Pea zoom around! New Video: Meet Isabella

Isabella was abandoned at a city shelter, and now faces more challenges.

Isabella is a 12-year old gorgeous Shetland Sheepdog mix. She was adopted from the ASPCA back in 1995. We recently discovered that she'd been abandoned at the city shelter. The ASPCA never abandons the animals we adopt out, so we brought Isabella back to us.

Isabella has a small malignant tumor in the back of her throat—fortunately, radiographs did not reveal that the disease has metastisized. As surgery or other treatment is not available, her cancer is likely to recur in as little as 3-6 months.

Attention, NYC Residents! Puppy Mill Awareness Day Walk Is This Saturday!

Here's a great way to join in the fight against puppy mills, Big Apple animal lovers! Grab your pooch and head out to Riverside Park this Saturday, May 20, for the annual Puppy Mill Awareness Day dog walk. The event, sponsored by our friends at Adopt-A-Pet, Inc. and Last Chance for Animals, will take place from 10:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M., rain or shine. Special guests include Chris DeRose of HBO’s Dealing Dogs and former puppy mill dogs Ajax, Fozzie and Daisy; there’ll also be vendors, a silent auction, and contests for canines to compete in, ranging from “Loudest Bark” to “Best Dressed.” For registration information, please visit Awareness Day online.

And P.S., if you haven’t already done so, please take a moment to thank Governor Edward Rendell for his willingness to initiate change in transforming Pennsylvania’s puppy mill industry.
