Video: Bronx Dog Fighting Victims, One Year Later

Dozens of dogs rescued during a dog fighting bust in the Bronx last year are finally seeing brighter days ahead, and many, including one dog known as Unicorn, have been adopted into loving homes.

These dogs’ lives were very different just one year ago. On June 21, 2012, we found them living in the dark, dirty basement of a six-story apartment building complete with a makeshift fighting arena, dog treadmills and a shopping cart full of raw chicken parts.

For months, ASPCA responders provided the dogs with extensive socialization, a healthy diet, medical care and exercise at a temporary shelter. Our goal was to prepare the dogs for adoption into loving homes, and give them a second chance to enjoy the rest of their lives free of pain and suffering. We’ve told you some of their stories. Watch the whole story and an interview with Unicorn’s adoring pet parents:

The Bronx dogs’ owner, Raul Sanchez, who pleaded guilty to dog fighting earlier this year, was sentenced to one to three years for animal fighting, one year for animal cruelty and one year for criminal possession of a weapon.

Dog fighting is a felony in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Please help us stop this barbaric form of cruelty by sharing this video with the hashtag #dogfighting and encourage your friends to share it, too.

This video just proves again that Pit Bulls are an incredible breed that can be treated so badly and turn around and make the most loving animal you'll ever have! I've worked with dogs most of my life and when I got my Pit Bull it was a true gift from God! Even when I think I can't love him any more the next day, I do.

Donna

I agree with you Holly. Pit Bulls are getting a bum rap which they don't deserve. I believe with the love and care that all animals deserve Pit Bulls can be the most loving and loyal dog anyone would ever want. Even fighting dogs, given the proper care and training, over time, can be rehabilitated into a happy pet, which this video proves. Thank God for organization like the ASPCA. Keep up the great work!!!

more than yesterday; less than tomorrow.

Thank you !!!!!!!!!!!! Sometimes it just good to hear a happy ending. keep up the awesome work you do. I have pit bulls of my own and i just could not imagine my best friend being treated like that and they should all know what love feels like because they have so much love to give back.

Thank god for aspca doing this sort of work and rescuing animals in need, I'm sick of seeing animal abuse on so many different levels and dog fighting is just another way that gangs and mindless fools make money I just hope this will fade out.
