| ABOUT ASPCASPAY.ORG
Pet overpopulation is one of the most critical problems facing shelters all across the country. No matter how aggressive our combined rescue efforts are, we estimate that approximately 8-12 million companion animals enter animal shelters every year, and approximately 5-9 million (60 percent of dogs and 70 percent of cats) are euthanized due to a lack of space or resources to adequately care for them. While shelter animals are certainly the greatest “at risk” animal population, many homeless animals will never even reach a shelter. Without proper veterinary care, many stray animals are fatally injured on the streets and a vast majority will pose a direct threat to the neighborhoods in which they roam—a direct impact of pet overpopulation on society at large. Because of these reasons, the ASPCA strongly supports spay/neuter programs as a means to curb growth in the companion animal population. Not only do such programs help to combat pet overpopulation from the “supply” side, they have also been seen to have dramatic health benefits for females (no uterine infections or cancer, and greatly reduced/eliminated mammary cancer), and some benefits for increased prostate health for males. It is for these reasons that spay/neuter programs are an important component of ASPCA® Mission: Orange™, a focused effort to create a country of humane communities—where no healthy, adoptable, treatable animal is euthanized simply because he or she lacks a home—one community at a time. Our database will help you take advantage of spay/neuter services in your community. Simply type in your zip code and the database will retrieve all nearby discounted service providers. We are constantly adding to this database, so if you don’t find any listings for your zip code immediately, please check back soon. Any and all feedback is welcome at website@aspca.org. Don't forget to watch our television public service announcement (PSA) focusing on spay/neuter. The ASPCA is extremely grateful to all those who so generously donated their time and talents to create and disseminate this important message.
