ASPCA® Announces Debut of New Spay/Neuter Public Service Announcement

PSA Featuring Tony La Russa To Coincide With ASPCAspay.org Web site Launch

NEW YORK, October 1, 2007—The ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) is proud to announce the debut of a new public service announcement featuring Tony La Russa, which is scheduled to air on CBS this week and will coincide with the launch of a new microsite, aptly titled ASPCAspay.org.

ASPCAspay.org is a comprehensive and searchable database designed to provide users with updated information about low-cost spay/neuter programs in their community.  After prompting the user for a zip code, the database retrieves all nearby discounted service providers, making the process of locating a low-cost clinic easier than ever for millions of pet-parents throughout the country. The PSA is viewable at http://www.aspcaspay.org/.

“We are incredibly excited to unveil the new spay/neuter public service announcement and website,” said ASPCA President and CEO Ed Sayres. “Spaying and neutering is the proven most effective method in reducing pet overpopulation.  By reducing overpopulation from the ‘supply side,’ we limit the need for euthanasia as a means of population control, thereby bringing us one step closer to creating a country of humane communities, one community at a time.”

The ASPCA estimates that between 5 and 8 million companion animals enter animal shelters every year. Approximately 3-4 million of them are euthanized due to a lack of space or resources to adequately care for them.  The ASPCA supports spay/neuter programs as a means to curb growth in the companion animal population. Not only do such programs help to combat pet overpopulation, they have also been seen to have health benefits for both females and males.

The ASPCA is extremely grateful to those who so generously donated their time and talents to create and disseminate this important message.  In particular, we would like to thank Tony La Russa and Elena Bicker of the Animal Rescue Foundation; Dodger Stadium; Zoic Productions, Cheri Shankar; Mathew Margo of CBS; Kathy Riordan and the Riordan Foundation; Getty Images; Dave Loftus; Andrew Orloff, Ric Shorten, John Crossly and Barbara Genicoff of Zoic Studios; Barry Walton, Bobby Dorafsher, Kim Cybulski, Chapman/ Leonard Studio Equipment, Inc. and Loni Peristere, Chris Jones, Tim McBride and Steve Scofield of the Post Group.
